It is with great sadness that I have to write this article. The rlslog family has lost a ~~member~~ brother, Sander van den Hout aka ‘Scit‘, one of the most popular staff members here on rlslog being with us for almost 1 year, committed suicide on Tuesday 15th of January 2008. He contributed to the site in so many ways, not just for the 83 excellent posts he wrote for rlslog but for his friendship, comradery and the jokes… good times. He can never be replaced. Our sincere condolences go out to Sanders family, girlfriend and friends, we cannot imagine what this must be like. See you on the other side my friend, my brother… Please honor his memory.

Note: We will begin posting again later this evening, until then let us grieve.

wow…what was so bad or so depressing, that too at the age of 20, that pushed him over the edge like this.

Just wanted to add my sympathy to the huge number of comments already posted. We don’t know anything about the circumstances so I urge those people who have shared anything other than sympathy and grief to please be careful, this is not the forum for speculation or negativity.

I was wondering being as I knew Scit for a while if it would be worth while doing a collection for his family or at least to do a competition of some sort with prizes in his honor?
He was as much a brother to us all as is my own flesh and blood brother and in this while we greive let us also know a new dawn emerges and with it the strength to continue on.

I don’t feel sorry for him!!! He was very STRONG to do such a thing. You need guts to suicide. I feel SYMPATHY for the family and for his friends. No words can describe what the family is going through … (For me it’s the worst thing that a child is dying before the parent).

May GOD give him the happiness he was seeking and the strength to his family to overcome this TRAGEDY.

i feel for all his family and all the rlsloggers. you have lost a friend and most importantly a brother. will there be a ceremony for him? i am also interested in the reason for his suicide. how can a 20 year old commit suicide at the beginning of his adult hood? he still hasnt been able to buy alcohol yet.

I will really miss the great moments when I first met you & the other guys in IRC, that was the first chance to get to know you a bit. It was always a pleasure to have a fun talk with you(when you are not afk) and I will remember you as a part of this new way of community forever as long as this site goes on.
You were one of those wheels that drove this thing in the right direction.

over 1200+ comments & to think if everyone donated just 1 dollar how much “easier” it would be for his family to handle the funeral expenses. Ya know I have one of those Obopay cards (the prepaid mastercards) and if you sign up they give you $5 free dollars no joke,no catch no nothing. Anyhow.. you can use that money for whatever you want, why doesn’t everyone go to their website obopay.com and donate that $5 to a paypal account that one of the staff members could set up in honor of him. I’ve got my whole $5 to donate, think about it… 5 minutes of your time, you can donate $5 and if only half of you who posted donated $5 the family surely could use $3000 to cover their funeral expenses, etc… If you any of you want to help him out that way you can either email me at flpokerguy33@gmail.com and i’ll send you a direct link to sign up for that $5 free or you can go to their website yourself. May his soul rest in peace. So sad to see a young man with his whole future in front of him, choose to leave. To those who have referred to his actions as “cowardly”, it is obvious that there were things going on in this young man’s life that he just could not bare. Everyone is not built to withstand things in the same manner, just because you may not have went in this direction, does not make you ANY stronger or wiser for that matter. Just means you made a different choice. My thoughts are with his family, and I hope that they will get through this together as a family. so sad…

Depression a disease, not a mood you’re in! Even You “suicide is the losers way out”-people do understand that the mind can be sick just like the rest of Your body, right? Try to wrap your head around that very basic concept, please!

Whey You’re depressed, you cant think rationally. You really cant see any way out of your troubles – and you think yourself worthless… Your mind makes You think that you are dragging your friends and loved ones down, and that they will be better of without you.

When people suffering from depression tries to kill themselves, its not an act of a coward.. just the opposite. They try to do what they think is best for everyone around them.

If any of you guys out there are going through what poor Scit was – please – see a doctor! You’re NOT worthless! There IS a way out that does not involve harming yourself – and things CAN get better!!!

I was in a bad place myself a few years back – and was unable to rationally see the source of my troubles for what it was – a disease… a chemical imbalance in the brains, also known as depression. All I registered was that life got more and more horrific and unbearable each day.

Finally I saw a doctor, who prescribed me some medicine which I took for a year. Of cause – my everyday problems didn’t disappear, but the way I looked at them did! I could suddenly again put things in their right perspective – I could appreciate my friends and loved ones again, and I could enjoy what was good in my life.

Being human can be tough – being young is being human without the benefit of experience, and is therefore even harder.

Don’t give up! It may take time – but it does get better!

RIP, Scit! – So sad.

Oh.. and You guys who thinks that God will send people who commit suicide to hell… give him a little credit, will ya’? My guess is that You worship a kind God – not one who punishes sick and sad people for all eternity!

Long rant..sorry.

so sad there was no one there to stop his desperate success in taking his life. my heart goes out to his girlfriend and family in their time of mourning. I will pray for him in my church this week.
It’s often very hard to tell when someone will try to do things like hurting themselves. My wife has tried on numerous occasions and its a hard thing to see when a person feels that there is no other option but this.
We all know someone with depression whether its diagnosed by a doctor or not, so maybe we should all take a bit more notice of their needs and let them be heard for what they may want.
Give all your friends a hug and let them know how much they mean to you.

I have known many adolescents who have thought about suicide. People’s reasons for suicide just cannot be legit in most cases. Some reasons are: “my girlfriend broke up with me” or “people make fun of me” or how about “I don’t have any friends?” Whatever the reason for the thought of suicide, there isn’t a valid one, unless we are dealing in euthanasia.

People usually think suicide is the best and only solution to an insignificant problem. They do not think about the consequences or the people they may hurt in the process. So what if you total your car, or if some people don’t like you and you aren’t the most beautiful and popular person there is. It all matters on what you think about yourself.

One might think: well how would he know how these people feel? I know because I too thought about suicide at one point in my life. But after evaluating the situation and putting some thought into how I not only would be creating the biggest sin there is, but how I will hurt my family and the ones who love me. I came to grips with reality and realized there are much better things in life than to sit and sulk about stupid, insignificant problems that occurred in my day. So what? That’s life.

Suicide is not a solution to any problem. It only makes things worse and more complicated. Depressed people are not the only ones to commit suicide. A person who could seem to be the happiest, most outgoing person you know could kill themselves and you would never be able to figure out why. People just sporadically think that suicide is the best alternative and that it is the end all be all solution to all their problems. But what they don’t think about is that they won’t have anymore problems because they will be dead.

Overall I think suicide is pointless and most people agree that it is the worst possible solution to any problem. There is no excuse whatsoever to take your own life. Any person should be thankful for what they have, they may not have all the money in the world or be the best looking person ever, but even the people who seem to have everything one could want, may not have happiness.

This is a sad loss of life
I come from a very poor country where day to day life is hard
I work for maybe $2 or $3 a day
It isnt much but thats my life
I feel sorry for scit that he had to take his own life
People who feel suicidal in the rich countries
should visit a poor country and realise that their life could have been different
I know depression can affect everyone regardless of money etc
But to see how people in other countries live is a great eye opener
So if anyone reading this feels suicidal, visit south east asia
or africa or another poor country and be thankful for the opportunities you are blessed with in your own country.

I guess that sometimes people just can’t deal with their problems, I am truly sorry for his family’s loss and hope they recover from this tragedy. But I have to say there is nothing more selfish than suicide.

@1256 I hear you my man… Scit was only 3 months older than me… I have Dysthymia and Anxiety disorder and it took me a long time to get on the right meds and I gave up hope once and luckily the hospital was able to bring me back. The thing I think is most important to remember is that even if it seems like you’ve tried everything, eventually you will find something that works.

Never posted on here before,but had to say this is such a shame.I’ve lost a few friends to depression,I believe it’s the stigma that society still attaches to this illness that prevents sufferers asking for the help they so clearly needed.
(BTW would it not be possible to disable the ad pages on this topic,it somewhat cheapens iit.)
