COUNCiL released an interesting documentary presented by BBC. This is the first out of three documentaries of The Language of Science. A nice 1cd rip by COUNCiL.
Physicist Jim Al-Khalili travels through Syria, Iran, Tunisia and Spain to tell the story of the great leap in scientific knowledge that took place in the Islamic world between the 8th and 14th centuries.

The world is full of hateress for lots of reason and religion is a very sensitive topic in that case. Unfortunately, through our "education" we all get different views on life and prejudges are not far from that in each's life.
We should be more open and curious and questioning on our own, instead of letting others decide for us what's right or wrong. Wether Believer or Not, we should always get our information not from just one, but from many different sources (like we do with the torrents)

@6: Yes, it appears to be the same series. The whole series "Science and Islam" seems to be divided into different sections. The first one "The Language of Science" contains 3 episodes. The next one "The Empire of Reason" contains another 3 episodes, and I guess that there will be more after that.
Could we PLEASE have some links for this???? It looks really interesting. I attended some lectures by Al-Khalili when I was in London a few years ago. They were on quantum mechanics, and were very interesting and accessible.

Back on topic, though: This is a very interesting documentary, if you're interested in history and science it's worth taking a look, but if you're someone with a very narrow/ignorant view of religions you weren't raised into, then please don't spout your opinions here.

My only issue with Islam is the fact you cannot question it. This leads to a buddy system that doesn't really allow for the type of condemnation needed to address the perversion of their religion by radicals.
Other than that, who invented algebra and the fact that the Chinese invented paper, doesn't really matter to me. All those things would ave been invented eventually. Just as th light bulb, etc.

islam doesnt permit religious leaders as heads of states. Shariah law is meant for the muslims of the land. State law is seperate. Its only todays leaders that choose to mix the two, islam is a religion of tolerance and when it started people of multiple faiths lived in the same cities and their belie respected. You have to remember man is corrupt so alot of faults ppl tend to pick at islam is nothing to do with the religion but the people who tend to be corrupt.

I don't see how that makes sense. Anyone can take a Greek, Latin, Arabic or any other word and employ it in English.
English is an amalgam of various languages, that is well known. "Amalgam" itself comes from the Latin "amalgama" which again doesn't point in any way to who invented the concept of mixing metals etc.
So you can't just say, "oh hey algebra comes from the Arabic language, hence they must have invented/influenced or even used it!" All it's proof of, is that someone liked the word.

But computers without algorithms? Sure! A "computer" is defined as a combination of 2 technologies: a computing device and programmability. 3. Chemistry Without Alkalis
In chemistry, an alkali (from Arabic: Al-Qaly is a specific type of "base". Bases are materials with pH > 7. ie. the opposite of acids (pH < 7).
Alkalis are, of course, naturally occurring materials. They weren't "invented", and yes you can do chemistry without them. They are a sub-set of bases.
People often say "measure the alkalinity of soil" but that's not quite right… you're measuring the "base" (pH) of the soil. There's no such thing as "alkalinity" as such… The two terms have come to be used interchangeably in popular culture, but they're not necessarily the same thing.

He just gave an example of what it can do not of why its forbidden. I'm a muslim and I don't even know the real answer and I couldn't care cos drinking(to excess which is what a lot of people too) is a filthy act no matter what way you look at it. Your reference to word Algebra itself states its a latin variant of an "Arabic" word. So you are misinterpreting it yourself. I believe what it means is that Algebra is a latin word, derived from an Arabic word. So the arabics called it al-jabr and it was changed to algebra in latin.

#29 is completely right. religion is a fatal virus. It is a machine invented by man and now is completely out of control. Look at what it inhibits? Worst of all everyone uses it and hides behind it to commit atrocious acts mostly for power and business purposes, always leading to the extreme. It is unfortunate that it is the building block of civility but I think of it as population control. Some use it for good, but it all depends on the preacher. That being said, do you believe in the words of your preacher or your God? I don't think the words of God come from a book.

Koran was not invented by people. It was sent to prophet Muhammad S.A.W. in words by God. It was spread by Muhammad to his friends and relatives in words. Then, after he passed away, the words were collected by the leader at that time and documented as a Koran and it took years so people can read it like they did nowadays.
And when we talk about Islam itself, it has nothing to do with terrorism. People did what they did because they're forced to do it because they live in a war country. If you're white and born as American but you're a Muslim, you're not going to blow yourself in public because you live in a country where there are no hundreds of children and women died everyday because of the mortar and bombs.
Islam teaches people how to live your life. After that, it depends on you either you want to follow it or not. That's why people are given the so-called brain. Islam told us not to drink alcohol. Why? To prevent the bad thing (accident, rape, etc). Islam told us not to do sex with people who is not your husband/wife. Why? To prevent the bad thing (AIDS, HIV, divorce, abandoned children etc, you name it). One day of searching around the internet was not going to give you everything about Islam (especially when you are just reading, not understanding). Learn it first, then we can talk.
I appreciate that rlslog is actually putting things like this up thank you very much. if we all get along with each other and except our differences and just try to get the answers ourselves by reading and researching we will not be puppeted by the main stream media who have no other religion but money and no other god but money we will prosper and become better and evolved humans. by pointing fingers at each other all we do is create hatred. instead we could try to fight the ignorance by educating ourselves. just imagine if all Muslims were terrorist there would be 1.8 billion of them that is nearly 1/6th of the world population that would mean every sixth person is a terrorist now common i am sure you are not that naive. what is happening in Israel is terrorism (killing children common). you could blame hammas all you want but the fact is that you as a civilized nation should come up with a diffrent strategy to get the so called terrorist and not by blowing schools up or hospitals and place of worship because by doing that you are making your self eqaul the so called terrorist that you are fighting. and this was said to me by an Israeli himself and his girl friend (both Israeli born) whom i met in a rally in New York to stop the genocide in GAZA. So for me to go say every Israeli is a child killer would be completely wrong weather i had met the Israeli couple or not. Generalizing some peoples action over the masses of people just because they had a few things in common is the biggest mistake a human could make. that is what those terrorist do when they hate American based on President Bush's actions.
any ways i hope one day we could get along with each other. and the first step to get along with each other is by educating ourselves. Educated people don't promote hatred towards anyone so a person spreading hate should stop hating and get educated.

Too bad almost none of this "documentary" is true. The Arab world contributed a good bit of science and tech nology to the world, but that doesnt mean Islam did. Islam wasnt even around for most of this stuff they say that it invented. And some of the other stuff that it says Islam invented was actually done by other cultures.

I think it was appalling of rlslog staff to demand that religion be protected from discussion , because it is a 'sensitive' subject. The followers of islam have been responsible for most of the worst atrocities worldwide in the last decade, and if that doesn't demand criticism i dont know what does.

The only link between Islam and science was the Falsafa in the 9th century. Muslims inspired by Greek rationalism, founded universities where much ancient knowledge was translated. After that Islam just used their fruits of labor and made very little progress, if any.
Just like christianity, the Islamic world also has a history of book-burning and persecution, which continues even today.

Where is your proof? The Media? This is not evidence of anything, people cause atrocities, it stupid to blame a belief/religion for atrocities. Have you watched the news lately? Do you not see what the Israelies are doing in Gaza, to Muslims (followers of Islam)? And then you claim this? Did you not see all the innocents that died in Afghanistan and Iraq when the west went in with no reason? and then still you make this claim.
