Science And Islam Part1 WS PDTV XviD-COUNCiL

COUNCiL released an interesting documentary presented by BBC. This is the first out of three documentaries of  The Language of Science. A nice 1cd rip by COUNCiL.

Physicist Jim Al-Khalili travels through Syria, Iran, Tunisia and Spain to tell the story of the great leap in scientific knowledge that took place in the Islamic world between the 8th and 14th centuries.

Its legacy is tangible, with terms like algebra, algorithm and alkali all being Arabic in origin and at the very heart of modern science – there would be no modern mathematics or physics without algebra, no computers without algorithms and no chemistry without alkalis.

For Baghdad-born Al-Khalili this is also a personal journey and on his travels he uncovers a diverse and outward-looking culture, fascinated by learning and obsessed with science. From the great mathematician Al-Khwarizmi, who did much to establish the mathematical tradition we now know as algebra, to Ibn Sina, a pioneer of early medicine whose Canon of Medicine was still in use as recently as the 19th century, he pieces together a remarkable story of the often-overlooked achievements of the early medieval Islamic scientists.

Religion of all these people was Science rather than Islam.
So it's only a marketing agenda by TV channels to divide Science along lines of religion to get extra $$$.

    Guys, Dr00n is right.
The world is full of hateress for lots of reason and religion is a very sensitive topic in that case. Unfortunately, through our "education" we all get different views on life and prejudges are not far from that in each's life.
We should be more open and curious and questioning on our own, instead of letting others decide for us what's right or wrong. Wether Believer or Not, we should always get our information not from just one, but from many different sources (like we do with the torrents) ;-)
    Sorry for my bad english.

    e.g.
    "Science = real

How can those two mix? they can't :) "

Watch it! No one says the two go hand in hand!

"Not to overlook Indian, Greek & Roman contributions to Arabic science."

Watch it! It says that the arabs deliberatly went out in search of new knowledge around the world! Including India, china, etc.

Serioulsy people if your going to just spurt out your opinions here your a tard!

After watching it last night i think that it's is interesting! But in my mind a series is proberly too much! I will get too bored! A one off special highlighting all the contributions to modern science from islam would be much better!

I gotta say though thepresenter is good! I like his style!

@6: Yes, it appears to be the same series. The whole series "Science and Islam" seems to be divided into different sections. The first one "The Language of Science" contains 3 episodes. The next one "The Empire of Reason" contains another 3 episodes, and I guess that there will be more after that.

Could we PLEASE have some links for this???? It looks really interesting. I attended some lectures by Al-Khalili when I was in London a few years ago. They were on quantum mechanics, and were very interesting and accessible.

Has anyone noticed theres a lot of islamic and muslim programs popping up these days?
There are programs that have nothing to do with islam but we are force-fed this junk.

I think its an attempt by the powers that be to make people be more accepting of muslims.
Well i made my choice a long time ago, being a born and bred Englishman, i dont accept it and my children never will either..

islam is dangerous, like buddhism – in that both believe that the HEAD OF STATE/GOVERNMENT should be the religious leader.. and laws should not be decided democratically, but from the word of 'God', as written in ancient texts..

Please people, download some Richard Dawkins
    http://richarddawkins.net/

Also, Islam is just as violent as Christianity.. both their texts allow many horrible things such as rape, torture, killing in the name of God.

    Religion is a virus.

Muslims are renounced for their lack of tolerance towards other religions. If you ask people in the street what comes to mind when you say the word "Islam", most of them would say "Terrorists". I wish their religious leaders would learn from their glorious past and preach for tolerance and peace instead of hatred and violence.

Sounds like this was written by a brainwashed person. Seriously…does ANYONE with an ounce of brain cells forget
"greek fire" that was used against Arab ships and something they had no defense against? Or how about rockets and the invention of Gunpowder that was invented by the Chinese way BEFORE "The Prophet" was even a twinkle in his daddy's eye?And what about the Mayans who already had physics and Astronomy/Math/Construction long before Islam was even a grain of thought. Or the Zulu's of Africa and the Cherokee's of the American South East who had thrivingCivilizationswell before the Arabs stopped killing each other over their sandpits. And I can name at least 100 more different civilizations that invented or had items that Muslums claim their religion invented. This "info" about this series seems to be written by an Islamic syncopate instead of one that actually was willing to give credit to other civilizations for items that were in existance long before Islam even began

"Ok, so you are free to sleep with someone from another religion?"

Sounds like your children aren't free to sleep with someone from another religion (when they're old enough, of course). There's really no point saying Islam is a backward religion when you're clearly a very bigoted person who wants to indoctrinate your children with your own backward values. Sounds like you would also prefer that people who don't share your values or skin colour should be driven out of the country. You're not a militant Iraqi, by any chance, are you?

Back on topic, though: This is a very interesting documentary, if you're interested in history and science it's worth taking a look, but if you're someone with a very narrow/ignorant view of religions you weren't raised into, then please don't spout your opinions here.

My only issue with Islam is the fact you cannot question it. This leads to a buddy system that doesn't really allow for the type of condemnation needed to address the perversion of their religion by radicals.

Other than that, who invented algebra and the fact that the Chinese invented paper, doesn't really matter to me. All those things would ave been invented eventually. Just as th light bulb, etc.

    @29
islam doesnt permit religious leaders as heads of states. Shariah law is meant for the muslims of the land. State law is seperate. Its only todays leaders that choose to mix the two, islam is a religion of tolerance and when it started people of multiple faiths lived in the same cities and their belie respected. You have to remember man is corrupt so alot of faults ppl tend to pick at islam is nothing to do with the religion but the people who tend to be corrupt.

    In the description:

"Its legacy is tangible, with terms like algebra, algorithm and alkali all being Arabic in origin and at the very heart of modern science"

I don't see how that makes sense. Anyone can take a Greek, Latin, Arabic or any other word and employ it in English.

English is an amalgam of various languages, that is well known. "Amalgam" itself comes from the Latin "amalgama" which again doesn't point in any way to who invented the concept of mixing metals etc.

So you can't just say, "oh hey algebra comes from the Arabic language, hence they must have invented/influenced or even used it!" All it's proof of, is that someone liked the word.

All civilizations of all beliefs, creeds & atheist have made tremendous contributions to Science. Saying Islam 'nicked' it is pure Bigotry ignorance & or gullibility. Give the devil his due. Islam @ the time promoted education.Seek Knowledge, even as far as China The Prophet (Peace & Blessings of God be upon him) said. All civilizations have borrowed each others knowledge & in many cases further enhanced & or developed that knowledge.

We the the law abiding & peace loving Muslims are by far in the majority, thank God.The world would be a different place otherwise.

The Qura'n is available in all the major languages of the world. Go on, read it. So you can make an informed opinion & not based on the terrorist few & press.

No one hates the terrorist that us Good Muslims, they've got us all in this situation & I for one will never forgive them for tainting my beloved relgion.

to everyone who hates islam, and is spreading hatred about it. Do you people know anyhthing about islam? no, you really dont youre views are based upon what you hear what you see in tv, etc. my point is you have not atudied islam properly to know what it is and what it is about.

The word islam means peace, terrorism is against the teachings/values of islam as islam does not allow killing of innocent people,it only allows war if an enemy attacks only then can you retreat, even then you cant kill civilians, babies, eldery … you cant even harm plants/vegetation.

"oh muslims are terrorists", you cant single out a whole race/religion based on a minority. I for example and those i know dont support this view and hate those who do. These people are from radical sects which are corrupted and do not properly adhere to the real teachings of islam.

mib post 59 you are very racist and naive. you have very extreme views. it doesnt matter race/religion you will always get bad people and they will always be a minority. so you cant say that to ANY race or religion or label people the way you do.

islam teches equality and peace among all, please have a look at the quran and the hadith, to see the teachings and then voice your oppinions and comments.

I wonder who is killing Palestinians now in Gaza by F16 air strikes

I wonder who has destroyed Iraq and Afghanistan

    Guys, terrorism has no religion.

Terrorists are of different religions and cultures

Injustice against the Arab people of Palestine is going to produce terrorism in the future.

Don't insult any religion as long as you are ignorant of it

You have to read reliable, trusty books on Islam, not just listening to rascist propagnada against Muslims and Arabs

For me, I love and respect the American people, but I hate the American Administration in the White House because it is always unjust to Arab and Muslim peoples.

"there would be no modern mathematics or physics without algebra, no computers without algorithms and no chemistry without alkalis"

That's pretty bold.. let's consult The Oracle.

    1. Algebra.

The word "algebra" is a Latin variant of the Arabic word al-jabr, which comes from the *title of a book*, Hidab al-jabr wal-muqubala, written in Baghdad about 825 A.D. by the Arab mathematician Mohammed ibn-Musa al-Khowarizmi.

So for a start, "algebra" comes directly from Latin, not Arabic. The original inspiration is the title of an Arabic book about a single person, a mathematician.

But he was NOT the first mathematician to think up Algebra, which actually originated with the Babylonians, as early as 2000 BC.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algebra#History

    2. Algorithms

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algorithms#Etymology

Summary: The word "algorithm" formed indirectly from the name of a Persian mathematician, Al-Khwarizmi, who wrote on the subject around 820AD. He was indeed orthodox Muslim.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhammad_ibn_M%C5%ABs%C4%81_al-Khw%C4%81rizm%C4%AB

So cool, an origin exists there.

But computers without algorithms? Sure! A "computer" is defined as a combination of 2 technologies: a computing device and programmability. While one of the earliest examples of this is is the astronomical clock invented by Al-Jazari in 1206, it does NOT use mathematical algorithms, it was a mechanical device which could be "programmed" mechanically.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computers#History_of_computing

    3. Chemistry Without Alkalis

In chemistry, an alkali (from Arabic: Al-Qaly is a specific type of "base". Bases are materials with pH > 7. ie. the opposite of acids (pH < 7).

Alkalis are, of course, naturally occurring materials. They weren't "invented", and yes you can do chemistry without them. They are a sub-set of bases.

People often say "measure the alkalinity of soil" but that's not quite right… you're measuring the "base" (pH) of the soil. There's no such thing as "alkalinity" as such… The two terms have come to be used interchangeably in popular culture, but they're not necessarily the same thing.

Much like the words "Documentary" and "Fact".

LOL – so many ignorant and arrogant people here.

If it werent for the Muslims translating and developing knowledge, you wouldnt be here looking at computer screens downloading torrents and what not. The break through by Muslim thinkers and scientists paved the way for the renaissance and revolution we live on.

So please, people, WATCH the documentary and then be moderate, accepting, tolerant and peaceful.

    @ 'muslim' 57

    You said:
'and about the alcohol,a drunk don't act from his own mind, he can do terrible things(rape..). The next morning he will forget every think like nothing happen.that's why we can't drink alcohol.'

What am i supposed to think about that comment?
So you and other muslims are afraid you will rape(or worse) someone if you drink?
    thats what you're taught?

That just worries me even more about your 'religion'.

You sound like a caged animal my friend…

He just gave an example of what it can do not of why its forbidden. I'm a muslim and I don't even know the real answer and I couldn't care cos drinking(to excess which is what a lot of people too) is a filthy act no matter what way you look at it. I don't want to drink and feel responsible for what is a major blot on society in general. Islam may forbid you from doing something but its up to you whether you choose to or not.

I have nothing against Islam but i see somebody posted a comment that it was fine to sleep with a person from another religion. I have head that Muslims frown upon this.

"there would be no modern mathematics or physics without algebra, no computers without algorithms and no chemistry without alkalis."

Where would they be without Mesopotamia (Assyrians – Sumerians – Akkadians – Babylonians).

These were the people that started our civilization. Read up on them, then we will start talking.

I Agree, I am not a muslim but I agree that sharia laws are the best for society, they keep a sence of decency and respect toward your fellow man.

It is these inbred mor0ns that twist it into their own meaning making it a bad thing and saying sharia law = terrorists.

Being sober and respecting society is very honorable in my opinion, these brain dead hicks could obviously learn a thing or two from it.

That just worries me even more about your 'religion'.

First of all when a person is drunk, he does not act as he's taught. So drop the stupid assault.

Secondly, if you think a person is sane while under the influence of alcohol, why do you think drunk driving is not allowed for a start?. Its forbidden because a person loses his sense of esteem and can commit act under its influence which will embarrass him.

    And for all those claiming

    @76:
Your reference to word Algebra itself states its a latin variant of an "Arabic" word. So you are misinterpreting it yourself. I believe what it means is that Algebra is a latin word, derived from an Arabic word. So the arabics called it al-jabr and it was changed to algebra in latin.

You know, Iran wasn't even a moslem nation until influence from the neighboring Arab countries made it so.

Really wish they wouldn't associate my country (Persian American here) with Islam… because the country's original religion is Zoroastrianism. Look it up.

Science = questioning+suspecting+observing+human-mind-sourced-hypothesis generation+verification(experiment, nature is the only true reference)+change/update/enhance/falsify+re-do from start –> better and yet-higher-level understanding of ourselves, the nature, and the universe
Religion = Personal issue + ruler's viechle for keeping the masses in control. No matter what the type, name, variation of the religoun.

The Koran was written by bedouins collaboratively who took the heretic Christian beliefs of the area, the Jewish system from its neighbours and mixed it in a blender to create their own version of these events to suit them….kind of like taking Scientific ideas from the Greeks and Romans and maintaining them in a time capsule (this doco)..like that Abraham visited Mecca or that Muhammad flew off on a unicorn to the sky ironically from the Temple Mount in Jerusalem..all wthout historic proof.

If someone hate Islam because of 9/11 its his problem that he don't know what Islam is.
I don't care about what he think. He must search to find what really Islam is.
About science, why don't everyone just google "MIRACLES OF QURAN" and find out….
Watch the documentary and see the influence of Islamic sciences and art on the development of the world.

Just another point "alcohol", In QURAN its says that alcohol is good in some parts and bad in some others, but its bad parts are much more than its good.
    @ RhuBarb
    scientifically alcohol is unhealthy,that's it.

First of all, Koran took years to be completed, its god paroles and its not a book written then introduced to people.
Historic proof for the Ascension of the Prophet Mohammed are just the next day of it when he describe the the place as it really, inch by inch…
Simply your comment is simply [NUKED], you need a REPACK or a PROPER.LOL

In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a bygone vexation stands vivified…and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition.
The only verdict is vengeance, a vendetta held as a votive not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous.

@95 danny i can say the same about Torah and Gospel but i don't like to insult others beliefs .
Mohamed is man of owner ,honest and he was illiterate (can't read or write ) so any claim that he inspired by Christians and Jewish beliefs or write ( compose ) Koran is totally ridiculous .
one of Islam dictations is to not imitate Christians ,Jewish or whatever any other creed .
