    Religion doesn't contribute to science, PEOPLE contribute to science. The fact that they are Muslim, Christian, Scientologists etc. doesn't mean a thing.

    Great show, thanks!! I think Islam, as a religion, like many others have 'inspired' and been catalysts for the great advancements in man's history.

    While people lived in ignorance and backwardness, the churches had scribes and intelligentsia. While Europe was in the dark ages, Islamic universities shed light on civilised living and science.

    Islamic scientific development is not confined to Arabs by the way, Islamic scientific development spans cultures, races and countries – this is why it is termed 'Islam and Science' as the common factor between these people was 'Islam' which was the catalyst.

    An Islamic saying goes: "Seek knowledge, even as far as China" – this is a direct command, which is the driving force for development of humans on earth. Knowledge can be spiritual or scientific.

    I believe everyone, Muslim or non-Muslim should watch this to at least to put into context western scientific sources.

    Islam may have been inventors and 'catalysts' of a few things,
    but dont try sugar-coating a society such as Islam as 'civilized'; far from it.
    Islam has a strict set of rules which opress people into thinking and behaveing in an 'idealistic' fashion, and anyone outside these set of 'rules' and 'laws' are non-beleivers, and wrong-do'ers.

    You people can spout from the holy book all day long,
    but if you try to convince me, you'll get the two finger salute…

    ISLAMIC? most of those scientists mentioned are of Persian, Jewish and Indian origin. When can we have a program about CHRISTIAN science? It seems like the arabs like to call everything other great nation do for MUSLIM/ISLAMIC.

    The arabic numerals (often capitalized) are the ten digits (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9), which—along with the system by which a sequence (e.g. "406") was read as a number—were originally defined by Indian mathematicians, later modified and transferred to North African Arab mathematicians and transmitted to Europe in the Middle Ages, whence they spread around the world through European colonialism. Today they are the most common symbolic representation of numbers in the world.

    Oh ignorance is bliss for some people.

    What the Muslims did, ARYAEN and RAMAKANT, was take/learn the sciences of other cultures/people and develop them further as well as introduce their own sciences. Do you claim Algebra to be Greek or Indian? Come on people, watch the show first, which is actually historically researched and accurate. Unlike what you read, this isn't propaganda by Muslims, but a documentary by the BBC.

    I think your comments or bias-ness shows only your ignorance. You should give credit where its due.

    @24 Please take it easy. Remember that persian science was set back several decades when the arabs took the empire. When they could at last resume their scientific work, they had to write in arabic, or else it would be condemned as the devils work and unislamic (just like latin in Europe).
    Why do some muslims have the urge to call persian scientists work as _islamic_? why don't we call the car a _christian_ invention?

    Only the most fanatic muslims call Hafez or Rumi muslim/islamic poets. Most call them PERSIAN. Do you claim the person who worked with algebra,al-Khwârismî, a muslim scientists? Do you call Da Vinci a christian (he was most likley an atheist) inventor or an Italian/Western?

    Islam wasn't the reason for scientific research, it was those people who were living in muslim realms (no matter their religion, since many of them were also jews)

    You are wrong in so many ways dude… Islam never destroyed any knowledge! Islam has the concept of Ummah! We Muslims aren't bound by ethnicity… we are bound together by religion. So like there are French, German, Italian scientists.. there are Islamic Scholars/Scientists… And if you read what the scientists wrote… they dedicated their work to Allah. Also note that Islam never persecuted any other religion or culture. Try going to a mosque and learning more about Islam rather than watching Fox or CNN! Also watch Baba Ali's videos on YouTube, they are hilarious. :D .. PEACE!!

    sorry to say. I'm a persian, and like most other persians, I don't say I'm muslim, but Iranian or persian. There is no brotherhood among muslim, not even among those fanatics. just look how shias, sufis and sunnis hate each other.

    Just call it whatever you like, but those persian scientists where PERSIANS first not muslims. Be proud of what you have, don't steal our culture and history and call it "muslim".

    you gotta give it to the guys. decimal place and all. what matters is that we made it this far muslim hindu jew christian. they got knowledge so neandarthals like us could use it not prove our ignorance by arguing bout the chicken and the egg. everyone has an equally important role. the hindu scribes with the number "0-9" the muslims who brought together this knowledge. christians for most of what we know in the modern world. jews for advance financing and business practices. i could go on. the point being knowledge has no religion rather than whimpering lik sore pirates go out there and grab it. dont be foolish

    @36 thanks mate. Just read how tolerant the founder of the first Persian Empire (Cyrus the Great) was. I think he would be ashamed if he saw how "his" country has turned out. No respect for other faiths, no respect for women and no respect for it's own culture and heritage. I think Elisabeth 1st would also be ashamed that the Country she saved from the scots and frensh (and spaniards) has lost all it's culture and pride.

    I think the british empire did a lot of dirty things, but a nation doesn't exist without the knowledge and pride of it's past (that doesn't mean one should be ethnocentric and dislike other people and cultures)

    I have nothing against Islam, but Islam and Persian culture have nothing in common. Just like Islam and the Western cultures. Multiculturalism will never work, because we humans like to live with our kind. look at immigrants who are successful in the Western countries. Almost all of them are assimilated. Most of them are labeled "sell outs" or traitors, but they are smart people who understand that if you want to succeed in a country, you have to act like those in charge. What culture you prefer at home, is a personal matter.

    Sorry but even though it’s true, this phrase sounds like another stereotype to me: “jews for advance financing and business practices.” as there is no real “science” domain that “jews” did not contributed to, extremely developed or even totally invented (like psychology or sociology for instance).

    Every man and culture has a right to defend themselves, and if they dont, they are defenseless.

    It is hard to hear how respected historical leaders of places in the world would frown on the situations of today.

    In 'Great Britain' i think: what is their left but 'acceptance' and 'tolerance'.

    After all, when a 'government' decides its 'right' who can argue…

It is the fanatics who zealously spread the stoning and hanging of rape victims and homosexuals. It is the fanatics who teach their young to kill and to become suicide bombers. The hard quantifiable fact is that the peaceful majority, the 'silent majority,'
    is cowed and extraneous.

    Communist Russia was comprised of Russians who just wanted to live in peace, yet the Russian Communists were responsible for the murder of about 20 million people. The peaceful majority were irrelevant. China's huge population was peaceful as well, but Chinese Communists managed to kill a staggering 70 million people.

    The average Japanese individual prior to World War II was not a warmongering sadist. Yet, Japan murdered and slaughtered its way across South East Asia in an orgy of killing that included the systematic murder of 12 million Chinese civilians; most killed by sword, shovel, and bayonet. And, who can forget Rwanda, which collapsed into butchery.
    Could it not be said that the majority of Rwandans were 'peace loving'?

    History lessons are often incredibly simple and blunt, yet for all our posers of reason we often miss the most basic and uncomplicated of points: Peace-loving Muslims have been made irrelevant by their silence.

    Peace-loving Muslims will become our enemy if they don't speak up, because like my friend from Germany, they will awaken one day and find that the fanatics own them, and the end of their world will have begun.
    Peace-loving Germans, Japanese, Chinese, Russians, Rwandans, Serbs, Afghans, Iraqis, Palestinians, Somalis, Nigerians, Algerians, and many others have died because the peaceful majority did not speak up until it was too late.

    As for us who watch it all unfold, we must pay attention to the only group that counts; the fanatics who threaten our way of life.

    the silent majority must unite, become vocal and make a stand. The fanatics are everywhere, in every race and creed and country. They take advantage of every situation to advance their cause, irrespective of whether you are their friend, neighbiur or fellow religious affiliation.
    Regarding this series, I don't know why a religion would allow a claim (made by BBC or others)to be made that their kind did this, that or any other scientific invention. Religion is not a location, and these people lived in different locations in the world at differing times. The fact that their nations were ruled by Islamic laws doesn't make all the people muslim, unless they follow those laws to the letter. I am sure that the other faiths in the world are not making claims that they invented other scientific advances.
    I am glad that I live in a fairly tolerant nation where most of the population get along. But once again it is the fanatics that make the judgements for the rest of the society.
    I will watch this from a scientific point of view as I see no reason to make it otherwise.
    I am a christian, and have friends from other faiths; we all get along despite the differences. I pray that the rest of the world will come to peace.
