Schillergames Real Desktop v1.32a-DVT

Ok, i don’t know who will actually need this, but i must admit it looks pretty weird (and funny). This application will turn your desktop into 3D room with all icons and recycle bin also in 3D. Could be fun, but I still prefer my usual 2D. If you are interested, feel free to try it out.

P.S. For all of you “l33t” here, yes i know: More noobware…

Description:

Let enchant you of this fascinating adventure and enter into a living three-dimensional world. Your icons behave now, thanks to the powerful physics-engine, like real objects that you can touch and move as on a real desk.

Features:

  • Change the size of the icons
  • Rotate automatically into normal direction
  • Fade automatically file names in/out
  • Show or hide filenames
  • Move files directly into folders
  • Storage and management of snapshots (icon order)
  • Drag & Drop
  • Multimonitoring Support
  • 3D Sound
  • Activatable Antialiasing
  • Very less resources needed
  • And more…

This in itself is really utter crap. Take a desktop, make it have 3-d looking images on the desktop and sell the software..hmmm

Now, what would be cool, is if someone could crate an ACTUAK 3-D desktop “environment” that can be manipulated with real world physics, think of being able to just stack folders, and who knows what else. Eh, maybe a bad idea, co-workers would come by and knock over organized folders.

@1 this is supposed to be what it is, I remember watching a testing vid of an app that looked very much like this and it actually looked pretty good but more tablet orientated but don’t if this is the same or whats happened since the video was made(it was a university project at the time a few years ago).

I Think I might try this just to see what its like maybe plug my tablet back in and try it with that, it can only be rubbish and you can always uninstall it.

  38. there was one
    March 21st, 2008 | 14:22

    @1
a couple years ago, 3d environment with rooms, like in games, forgot the name
alas it used too much resources and also needed arrow keys so not that useful

with a better pointing device, maybe a mouse with a little joystick instead of wheel, would have been cool with todays computers
    i suppose

“an ACTUAK 3-D desktop “environment” that can be manipulated with real world physics, think of being able to just stack folders, and who knows what else.”

I sit at an actuak desktop every day and move sh!t around with real world physics i.e. a push of an arm.

  42. Hatchet
    March 21st, 2008 | 14:54

This idea would be a lot more useful if we used virtual reality headsets. Then you could have a whole ton of icons, and you just “look” around your room to find what your looking for.

VR will be a reality soon.

Can this real desktop collect dust just like everything else at my computer?

    ;)

It looks fun for a bit… I kinda want it for if I move back home to New Brunswick sometime this summer… My friends would think it’s kinda cool… And is the person who took that screenshot of the program stalking my computer or something?! I´m trying it right now… It uses 26.960 Kb of memory (too much for me)… The design is pretty nice. I may leave there a couple of days until I get bored.

  49. Good!
    March 21st, 2008 | 15:24

This software is really good and cool actually! It makes the desktop less stiff and more realistic. Feels quite good to be honest. Those who dont like this is persons that are stiff in mind and limited.

They deserve the cash if you ask me.

wow. christian, welcome to what looks like a thankless job, dont despair as theres quite a lot of people here that check this site out every hour and love getting this stuff (although theres been no mac stuff for a while;). Keep it up guys as not everyone gets to come back and respond….. (most of us are working during the day, not receiving a social security check in one hand and complaining about all the free stuff landing in the other)

when i run the program, it lags HEAVILY..why is this so? my vram is 512mb and i have a 2gb ram. even when i turn antialiasing off, it still lags heavily especially when i hover over the icons (and their labels pop up).

    @ Christian,
I kinda like this program! Thanks for posting it; who cares if some people don’t like it… Some people do! And yeah, it takes up a bit more ram, of course… And it crashed on me once when I was in the settings, but it’s pretty neat I think! I don’t know how to change icon size in it though :P Thanks for the post dude.

  59. Armstrong14
    March 21st, 2008 | 16:11

And oh yeah… The reason why the English is bad in the info is because the website is originally Dutch, and they had a language translator change it into English :P

  60. Ummmm Hello?
    March 21st, 2008 | 16:17

Anyone figure out how to drag and drop items into folders in this 3D desktop.. Is it just me or did they miss this HUGE feature. lol

  61. Atlas
    March 21st, 2008 | 16:22

you guys are way too hard on experimental software like this. Sure, it’s more of a toy than a useful tool, and I think you need a touch screen to get the most out of it. Would be the way to go if we had hologrammatic 3d displays, but still seems to be science fiction these days.

  62. Atlas

    March 21st, 2008 | 18:53

Now ive tried it its quite good but lacks features, it doesnt allow you to group icons or stack them, and its not very intuitive. Points for the attempt and brining it to market but I will wait till someone brings this out with a better feature set at the moment there is not enough in this to justify using it.

Still wondering how to “Drag and Drop” into folders?? ANYONE?

  76. Monkey
    March 21st, 2008 | 23:58

@77: To drag and drop things into folders, first right click the (R) logo in your taskbar, by your messenger and steam and shiz, and hit settings, then make sure in “General” tab that “Throw items into folder” is ticked. then pick up whichever file with both mouse buttons to make it float and carry it over the desired folder and drop it in. Sorted :D

I’m running Vista SP1, and so far for me the crack’s been working great, as I haven’t been asked for the serial number… However, I opened it just now and it crashed when I moved an icon, so I rebooted the app and it did it again when I moved another icon… And so on and so forth, but it didn’t do this to me yesterday… Meh, must be Vista I guess… It’s a fun app nonetheless!

As a software developer i think it is the future of user interface (I mean 3D). Makes users life easy if well implemented.

There are two probelms facing virtual desktops.
    1 resources/ performance is a minor problem.
2 User Acceptance is the major Isuue as u can see from comments from this post

Personally found the Real Desktop to be interesting but liitle impractical

I would like to see how bumptop system comes out looked more promising

and for those calling it a n00bware watch out as it is the future its just matter of time when it becomes accepted in mass market and then u will have something like what happened to office(classical toolbar for ofice 07)
