Scammers donate money from stolen credit cards

The Symantec security blog today talks about a trend its authors are seeing more of: Scammers using stolen credit cards to make small donations to online charities. The prevailing theory is not that the criminals are being altruistic Rather, security researchers believe the donations are being made to test whether a stolen card is still active, much in the same way that thieves test stolen physical cards at gas pumps, where there is little chance of anyone spotting them if the card comes up canceled. According to Symantec, “bank behavior monitors may be less likely to pick up on donations to charities. Legitimate charitable donations are not daily transactions for anyone with a credit card, and so it would be difficult to determine if they are out of the norm.”

This is hardly a new trend. Two years ago, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Security Fix spotted scam artists using stolen credit cards to donate to the Katrina relief efforts. Credit card numbers are bought and sold in underground “carder” forums, which bring together the people who have stolen the credit card numbers with those who want to use them. These charitable donations are typically made by the person buying the card numbers as a final check to ensure that the numbers will work.

STFU all you little dorks asking for stolen credit card info. Get a life. That shit really messes people up. People who have worked hard for their money, while zit-faced, cheetos-eating, basement-dwelling douchebags like you try to steal their money.

You aren’t getting in. Why would they share the money with you? Its getting harder to cover a card; by the time it passes, it is already hit…a swipe and thats about all you’re going to get, then dump the loot on eBay. Many dumb people that buy computers and have no idea what they need them for…those are the easiest marks.

You dumb kids coming to irc feed us pretty well, too. You know how many of you dumb kids give your parents card numbers to us to “test” them for you? haha. Sorry, I’m not in the biz no more. Have ankle bracelet to prove it. I’d get a job in security if there wasn’t 6 million unemployed russian programmers lol. Yeah, they are all better than me, too.
