You have to look after general loyalty and there is a lot of detailed diplomacy too, much more than the 'accept my offer or die' of the Total War games. A cool thing is that even in one particular campaign where it seems that the biggest faction is clearly going to win easily, I have found that the 5 smaller factions tend to ally and harrass the big one and make the battle much harder than it first seems. Never could see in Total War a nation with 20 or more cities find trouble against a motley bunch of nations with maybe 10 cities between them.
