Samsung will sell 1TB drive under $199
Samsung has released a one terabyte (TB) hard drive that’s capable of storing around 40 billion songs (or something near that number perhaps) for only $199, which is less than 100 English pounds. The desire for HD-quality programming and hard disk drive (HDD) recorders has led to an increase in storage capacity, and now the industry is talking about things in TBs rather than GBs. Although only an option for the PC, the EcoGreen F1 from Samsung offers a huge amount of storage for serial downloaders, or, as the Korean electronics company suggests, those with large surveillance capture needs.
Any HDD for less than a hundred pounds has to be worth the money, and this capacity would surely be all the storage you would ever need. Ever, ever, ever. Samsung have attempted to keep things decent in the spec stakes too, with 5400RPM rotational speeds, and offering the highest capacity per disk for one terabyte hard drives, at 334GB per platter. This keeps the amount of parts needed down to a minimum, thus boosting the overall performance of the device. Samsung says the drive uses up to 50 per cent less power than other one TB drives and has technology to keep it quiet through operation. EcoGreen F1 should be available in June of this year.

For that money I would buy some power tools and go steal 200 of them.
Going to get me one of these! An appropriate piece of tech news for RLSLOG
.
Oh yeah , now we talkin
40 billion? how bad are you guys at math seriously?
or how old are you?
stop mismanaging this site and get rid of the phishing posts in the comments aswell
wait wtf is wrong with this article? i got a 1 TB hard drive a year ago for under 200 dollars, and 40 billion songs? EXCUSE ME? jesus christ people, you shouldn’t need a calculator for this but whip one out any way because apparently you do. this is just sad.
1 terabyte is not the space i will ever ever ever need.
give me 5 of those and i might be ok for a while.
yeah 40 billion songs.lmao
maybe thats 40 billion karacters i dunno but lol.
Hello RLSLOG readers, this is Ross Kemp. You might remember me from the tv-show Ross Kemp (snitchin) On Gangs. I have gotten word, that on this site i have been a called a snitch.
People here have said that i would have snitched on all the gangs that i featured on my tv-show Ross Kemp (snitchin)On Gangs. People here have claimed that i have used the footage from filming the gangs, as evidence against the very people i documented. I have to tell you, that this is absolutely true.
Next, i’ll probably snitch on this site.
I’m not just a snitch,
i am The Snitch
Sincerely (snitchin on) Yours,
Ross “The Snitch” Kemp
oh woops i apologize for my previous post, i think at 25 bytes per song, you actually COULD get 40 billion songs on the drive.
lol @ 40 billion
So what? I bought 2 Seagate 500mb drives for 170. I don’t get this pricing policy. Usually u’d get something that has twice the amount of something for less that 2 of something. That’s the rule.
@ 10…i assume u meant 500gb. and yeh i’d prefer to get 2×500gb than 1×1tb…2×500gb is way more reliable!!!
although some people would like to get as much outta all there (S)ATA connections as possible
For the sake of rlslog. Please delete this article. Its so bad in so many ways!
Well, I think there is some element of sarcasm in this post.. that most of you have failed to spot?
40 billion songs /more than you could ever need – sound like the sort of thing they used to say every time any new harddrive came out.
Also, the pricing policy does work in this case, as you have to pay for the convenience of having just one harddrive rather than two separate ones. Convenience costs.
I think the 40 billion thing was a joke/sarcasm!! Keep up!!
Anyway this has been on amazon.co.uk for a while: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Western-Digital-Essential-External-Drive/dp/B000W9RNOA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1211797304&sr=8-1
Its a WD 1TB hd for 113GBP so yea I don’t see how this is in ANY WAY so exceptional!
This is my first tome posting a response to this website and for the record I love the site but this article sucked so bad its not funny does he know anything about computers? if 1 TB is all the space i’ll ever need then I just wasted all my money on TB’s that I don’t need, lets start formatting my Hard Drives and sending them back to the shops, please get this guy tech wise.
errrr…
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=723884
I have a Samsung drive. It sucks.
“..and this capacity would surely be all the storage you would ever need” yes.. for a year maybe.. or even less…
Edit: Tome – Time No editing service on posts Bah!
ANON:
How does the drive suck I’m curious as I was thinking of getting one???
I will belive it when i see it… who else thinks this will cost around $499
@7
LoL.
I’m thinking of getting one too – at the moment I have a 250Gb drive in 5 partitions, and it’s lasted a while but it’s starting to fill up – a !TB second one will open up a whole new world of fun.
You guys seen those DVRs that take PC HDDs? slap one of these in there

http://www.pixmania.com/ie/uk/666541/art/samsung/spinpoint-hd103uj-f1-seri.html
Both under e130 ex p&p
For $200, might as well spend ten dollars more and get 2x 640GB HDDs. That’s an extra 280GB! Cheeehoo. And I Lol’d @ the 40 billion. If only that was possible.
At this price its what, only 10 cents a gig and yet people are still complaining, jesus christ :/
Is it worth it? I need one cuz i have lots of pron and i would surely be sad if i had to delete it all cuz i have to format. whats the speed? im thinking of getting one to preserve all my precious babes on the 1 tb hdd.
Ok so if I buy one of these do I get a free luxury watch with 25% extra included with 40billion keyrings?
@25
You have done your maths wrong.
do not buy this drive if you are looking for performance. the low 5400rpm make this drive crap.
heres the real deal http://www.ebuyer.com/product/143288
its a Samsung SpinPoint F1 HD103UJ 1TB Hard Drive SATAII 32MB Cache. very good performance and currently ment to be one of the best disk hardrives (excluding raptors) out at the moment. plus its less than £100.
i already have 4 of these:

@28
I assume he’s either really dumb or was making an incredibly inaccurate joke.
like 29 said the 5400rpm spec is total garbage, way to slow in this day and age, laptops are comming tru with faster speeds then that nowadays, wait for somthing a lil more decent….
It stores 333.000 mp3 with 3 Mb each
Is it so important if it is 10 or 20 bucks chepaer in some UK store. English people! Is it 10-20 pounds so important for you?
nothing new, WD release a 1TB hard drive for 200$ and the seagate 1TB parallel hd was going for 229$
@39 yes
I bought a 1tb HD for 184.99 over 2 weeks ago. How is this news? and it was 7200rpm too.
Is RLSlog posting old news? I’m sure Samsung isn’t THAT far behind the times.
I don’t really like Samsung drives, they’re kinda crap.
What I always use is Seagate, and sometimes Western Digital and Hitachi/Toshiba/Fujitsu.
2/150GB Raptors internal, 6/500Gb USB WD HDD(so I can hide them lol), Still not enough. omg @ 5400 RPM how long does it take to format/defrag. Honestly, these people are scary.
Gee, more data to lose when the drive crashes…
WTF is 5400RPM???
that’s not tech news
were it to be > 7200RPM that would have been tech
That is a poor TB drive. I have had my Hitachi TB with 250GB per platter at 7200RPM. Find me something better than that at less than 250.00 at Nov 2007 pricing. ha ha at 1+3 for spam protection.
Pff… this isn’t news. eBuyer UK has been selling them for £87 ($170) for months now. 7200rpm version is a little more pricey though.
Who buys Samsung drives anyway, Western Digital ftw.
Quote “Any HDD for less than a hundred pounds has to be worth the money, and this capacity would surely be all the storage you would ever need.”
1TB= all you would need? bold statement, I currently have 4TB in my PC and am looking at getting another HDD very soon as I only have about 40GB free…
Yeah, it’s not all the space you need especially if you download everything you see without regard to quality. Then again, most of you monkeys don’t know even know how to spell.
As for me, if I watch a crap movie like Semi-Pro, I delete it to make room for something of value. And I don’t try to have every song, game and worthless application known to man on my hard drive either.
If you are not producing/editing video, or running a server then you’ll just end up like one of those old compulsive bastards with a messy house in the end with every piece of garbage they ever found.
This is fine for a back-up/storage for your quality movies and music; in conjunction with a 250GB (or two if you really are doing something) faster primary drive.
Try a little discretion.
@19 – they have been known to be unreliable and my system intermittently freezes or fails to boot, which I think is down to the hard drive (or windows). I wouldnt recommend the samsungs as they dont have a great reputation. WD or Seagate would be a better bet.
@50, not all of us are ‘pack rats’ some of us use our PC’s for business too and when you are storing thousands of .tif files in 16 bits per pixel the space soon disappears…
Yeah, 1TB drives have been under £100 for a while now (if you know where to look of course.. it’s not that uncommon though).
@11 Exacly. Have I been Chinese i think it wouldn’t be the limit at all.
WD 1TB drives have been at $99 here for a few months now, and they’re not worth $5.
When something is too cheap, you need to ask questions about quality controls and % initial defects, especially when you’ve got 1TB of data at risk.
wow peps, grow up, so many of you take offence to this crap, like really does it bother you that much about misinformation, here in canada we have freedom of speech it a right to say what you want, you peps r viewing and downloading stuff for free so don’t be so bloody selective if you don’t like what these fine people at rlslog have to say then maybe you should not look at the site, its pretty a simple concept. I have read these posts for about a year and i get a kick out of the stupid crap you people post on here, a very big majority of you act like its your god given right for this info and like the world owes you something….It Does Not Owe You ANYTHING!!!!
GROW UP PEPS!!!!
The web site is only relaying info not making it up!!
As for rlslog keep up the good work!!
£80 in UK for Samsung 1TB, its the second best Harddrive in the world, behind only 300GB VelociRaptor.
Its still cheap and works perfectly.
1TB = 1 T!tted B!tch
Samsung are exceptionally well regarded drives – most reviews put them alongside the seagate’s as the best consumer level drives.
Same performance as the seagates, and far cooler too. WD are OK, but I’ve just had yet another one fail on me this week (in nearly 20years I’ve only ever had 3 drives fail on me – one was a maxtor about 10years ago, a WD last year and a WD this year).
As to this drive, people obviously are unable to read – “EcoGreen F1″. There is a reason it’s 5400rpm – it’s designed to be a low power drive. Low power = low heat production. In a HTPC or in a PVR that’s important. It will also be quieter, so anyone wanting/needing a quiet machine will be advised to get one of these instead of a 7200rpm drive.
300 to 350 000 mp3’s more likely.
Have 4 SATA Samsungs. 3 DEAD and the last one well on it’s way to join the other 3.
Would’t want to have one even if it was for free!
can someone care to elaborate on whoever that snitch guy is on post 7? wtf is his problem. Oh yeah & 1 TB is nowhere near enough for me nowadays
my cost price is £50 + vat on samsung F1 1tb
4 full Blu-rays
@14
That one is a usb external
@11 i presume you mean GB not mb or gb
LOL, I had 2 TB of stuff 2 years ago now over 3TB so I guess this guy is way wrong in some cases at least. Man nothing hardly to DL anymore come on Hollywood make something worth me stealing as your wasting my bandwidth
I don’t know, I’m lenient to have a drive that large. If I had 1TB of data on it and the drive went bad I’d lose all of it. Currently 500GB drives are $99 or so and would be a better idea to get two of them for your “1TB of space”. That way if one dies you only lose half your data.
5400 rpm makes it pretty much useless for me

tehe.. You prob. wouldn’t even fit 40 billion song titles on 1TB. But, a mistake is a mistake. Damn good to see prices go down though.
Laughing at #4 LOL
haha haha Martine you did it again :p
