Russian hackers massively attacking Georgian sites

Attacks by Russian hackers against Georgian Web sites, including one hosted in the United States, continued Tuesday even as Russian President Dmitri Medvedev ordered a halt to hostilities against Georgia. Tom Burling, acting chief executive of Atlanta-based Web-hosting firm Tulip Systems Inc., said the Web site of the president of Georgia was the target of a flood of traffic from Russia aiming to overwhelm the site. Burling said bogus traffic outnumbered legitimate traffic 5000 to 1 at president.gov.ge. “Literally, our people aren’t getting any sleep,” Burling said. Tulip’s firewall was blocking most of the malicious traffic. The site has been periodically inaccessible, though it was working midday Tuesday. Burling said the attacks have been reported to the FBI.

The site was transferred from servers in Georgia, the small nation south of Russia, on Saturday. Georgian-born Nino Doijashvili, Tulip’s chief executive and founder, happened to be in the country on vacation when fighting broke out Thursday. Doijashvili offered help to the government when it became apparent that Russian hackers were getting the upper hand, shutting down several government and news sites. The U.S.-based Shadowserver Foundation, which tracks Internet attacks, said they had noticed commands to attack Georgian sites being issued over the weekend to “botnets.” The computers are used to send bogus traffic to targeted sites, slowing them or in some cases bringing them down. The same botnets are also targeting Russian news sites and the Web site of Garry Kasparov, the Russian chess player and political activist, according to Steven Adair at Shadowserver. On Monday, hackers took over the Web site of Georgia’s parliament and replaced it with an image that drew parallels between Georgian president Mikhail Saakashvili and Adolf Hitler, Adair said.

To the first poster: Russia’s defense industry is massive. Behind the US, they produce some of the world’s most advanced weaponry available. In either case, I certainly hope Georgia is able to get back on it’s feet (economically speaking). In so far, this “little war” has cost them a significant portion of their territory. Furthermore, I hope Russia will learn a lesson from Chechnyia already and stop trying to incorporate all the land’s around it! God forbid it is the LARGEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD, with a population a THIRD of size of the United States. How much more land could they need?

Being not american either, actually I think they do have some democracy at the local level, missing in most of the world.

They can vote for the sheriff in some towns, as well as other officials that in lots of countries are either set by their superiors or the state or people vote for “parties”, not people, parties that can easily get really corrupted as the parties themselves decide who is to be one of them.

Also at least in California they have referendums like in Switzerland. This would be the democracy, not usually explained by the media, that they might feel to have. The Swiss have it, and they are richer than most of Europe as people may be happier with working, knowing they get their part, even if small.

Bush argues that Georgia has the right to do to the Ossetians and Abkhazians exactly what the British did to his forefathers that provoke the War of Independence that established the USA he now represents.

He pushed for Kosovo’s independence but not in Georgia and what is the difference? Nothing really!

@21 The original idea of democracy is good, but it’s an utopia imho. I agree US have it on basic levels and this good, but that don’t give rights to spread it on other countries especially by war.
I know that our goverment is not best in their deads, but they defend interest of our country in nearest neighbourhood.
What americans will do if Cuba for example attacks Mexico? Watch? I don’t think so.
In South Osetia over 60% of population have russian citizenship, we just defend them from agression.
And (i speak for myself), we don’t hate people (any americans or georgian). But there’s always a ultras as everewhere.

Georgia started this by killing 10 russian PEACE Keeper and injuring another 30 or so!
The U.S/pentagon has been trainning the Georgia’s police for the last 2-3 years and giving them plenty of weapons!

of course this all happened on the day the olympics started meaning the was a total media cloud focused on the games! i feel the elites origanstion that runs the U.S governement has had this planned from the beginning! its time to wake up to the fact that we cannot trust are own government to tell us the truth on wats happing in the world to day!

of coruse im not going to be able to change ur mind just like that! im just saying step back from wat u belive and have been told and just look at all the information ur being given! it annoys me to see people throwing abuse at the russains when they havent got a clue wats going on! dont always beileve wat the media tells u its mostly!

Russia bullies around every neighbouring country it has & they use oil/gas to gain leverage on their neighbours. (no wonder the baltic states and poland & ukraine are willing to help georgia) They just found an excuse now with south ossetia & decided to invade them to “free” the south ossetians. They are just pissed because the georgian government is pro usa and want to join NATO.

Meh, The Russians can burn, it’s what they deserve. I can say this truthfully, for it’s the Russians whom killed over 10 million of my people via starvation and death squad. The sins of the father are not vanquished by a democracy that has become subverted by the same tyrants that committed genocide in the past.

such sins repeat themselves, such as in this case.

Are the Yanks good people? No, but they are a helluva lot better for the world, then the straight up evil Russians, and the calculating Chinese.

After all, when was the last time the American govt shrewdly, and calculatingly, massacred people by the 10’s of millions? 180yrs ago.., better than 40yrs for the Russians and 30 for the sino’s

Stop using fake news from america and russia as facts. Noone knows what happen except the people there. I bet you can find “Georgia caused it” or “Russia caused it” news anywhere on the internet. It’s all bullsh*t the only facts that matter are the people who die.

P.S. How do you russians explain the government using a nerve gas to immobilize Czechen terrorist (who took over an opera house) while in the process killed innocent russian and the “media” said they were killed by terrorists and when they showed the bodies they had no bullet holes… Hmm… guess Russian media always tells the truth! /sarcasm

“The press today is an army with carefully organized weapons, the journalists its officers, the readers its soldiers. But, as in every army, the soldier obeys blindly, and the war aims and operating plans change without his knowledge. The reader neither knows nor is supposed to know the purposes for which he is used and the role he is to play. There is no more appalling caricature of freedom of thought. Formerly no one was allowed to think freely; now it is permitted, but no one is capable of it any more. Now people want to think only what they are supposed to want to think, and this they consider freedom.”
