Rumours: Sony plans UMD-free PSP 2
Kotaku is reporting that a developer at Acclaim, David Perry, wrote this message on his Facebook and Twitter accounts: “I hear Sony FINALLY has the PSP 2. And thank goodness, they’ve removed the stupid battery-sucking UMD disc drive. I’m excited!” Now that message is rapidly making its way through the blogosphere. Of course, it’s unclear what it means exactly. As Kotaku says, no one knows if Perry has seen the new PlayStation Portable or is “just hearing rumors through the development community.” At the same time, it wouldn’t be surprising if Sony were to shift away from a cumbersome optical disc system and move completely to flash memory storage (Memory Stick Pro Duo) and digital downloads via the PlayStation Network Store.
Kotaku does bring up a good point in wondering how such a device would be backward-compatible (perhaps if you have the UMD, you’d be allowed to download a digital version of the same game?). While there’s been a lot of chatter lately about a totally new PSP system, it’s still up in the air whether the next version will be a complete redesign (a true PSP2) or just another another incremental upgrade to something that would be called the PSP-4000 (we’re on PSP-3000 right now). Kotaku and others are pointing to E3 in early June as a moment that would be ripe for a PSP2 announcement–which does seem logical.

I really like the NDS for it's memory card use. I got a DSTT for it and every game is free. ^_^
psp is the best..just jailbreak it first.. then the magic begins.. simple as that
if the psp ever looks like that and does whatever it is said to be able to do, then i guess sony is gonna top the chart in console gaming ._.

if the psp wasnt by sony it wudve been far more successful. i mean come on, umd movies? who wud want to spend money on that? imagine a psp that doubles as a pmp without the need for encoding. i mean the technology is there, but sony just doesnt want to use it. its like they rather put less features on it just to prove a point.

A modded PSP is already UMD free. You just play every game from an SD card.

@ John – A modded PSP STILL has the UMD drive and therefore is not UMD free. It wastes space in my pocket. Also they use MS Pro Duo cards, not SD
I have been searching this for yonks, and I can tell all of you, its a lie, theres no such thing as a PSP 2, sony will not do it
They are going to however, release a PSP 4000
The PSP 4000 will have a smaller screen, dual analog sticks, which protrude from the structure by about 2mm, and a redisigned speaker, motherboard, microphone, and a little camera, like 3G Phone cameras at the top
The motherboard update will rule out any possiblity of putting custom firmware on it, and also, the new PSP will definitely use UMD's, it will also have support for bigger UMD size disks, and dual layer
And thats PSP 4000
Any Comments or Post coming from David Perry are absolute rubbish. The Acclaim company we all loved in the past is not this one. He purchased the name a few years ago and has made a mockery of it. Bringing one of the most anticipated mmo's in years state side and totally made a mockery of it. The situation he has let his developing staff and staff lead this company back down to shame.
He has made Hundreds of promises to may fans and gamers of the community and has followed up with ZERO of them (( O )). Don't Believe me? Go check acclaim website on any of their forums. Any post made regarding his staff asking for help or regarding post me made in the past are Immediately locked. He company is after nothing but money. Ex. In 2moons (Dekaron) the coin shop now sells items which u can get in game for FREE easily, such as weapons and armor, and they reduced the drop rate on many of these items. They are losing money on the game becuase of poor customer support and many other issues and they go and impliment more obsured ways to get money they shouldnt have in the first place. His techincal staff is a joke it takes them 7-9 months to translate codes from a released game thats takes 15 year old kids no longer than 2 weeks to put up on a private server. He is again a mockery to the Acclaim name and this company will never succeed with him heading projects.

Forget all that give us better games please. Sony is the equivalent of building the fastest race car with no where to race it. Yea it might be all big and bad but what fun is it if u dont put it to any good use.
come on guys if sony do bring out a psp2 it will have to do better than number 1 , with oled and much bigger cards out sony must bring out something for today (NOT SOME DUMM AS PS3 SH*T )I have had the psp-2000 pretty much when it first came out and was and still are happy with that . . Now sony likes to show off, take the disc man and the md , which they would upgrade and upgrade every 6 months or so (trust me i use to make it a hobby to find whats new with sony)so lets just wait and see what the future brings
me as i said before oled is the future baby ! And longer battery time . . Oh tech talk time the psp 3000 only has a brighter screen and a chip that was change due to cfw . . I would not get one if i was you they dont like fast movement . . Caps out ps long live rlslog and dark_alex . .
