Rumours: Microsoft Windows 7 in 2009
Microsoft Corp. has dropped two strong hints in the past two days that the next version of its Windows operating system will arrive in 2009, shaving up to a year off previous expectations. It could also be a signal that Microsoft intends to cut its losses with Windows Vista, which has been poorly received or shunned by customers, especially large companies. Microsoft has long said it wants to release Windows 7 about three years after Vista, which was released to manufacturing in November 2006 but not officially launched until January 2007. Given Microsoft’s recent track record – Vista arrived more than five years after XP — most outsiders had pegged sometime in 2010 as a safe bet for Windows 7’s arrival.
Microsoft is targeting the middle of next year for some sort of release milestone for Windows 7 — the only codename known at the moment — though whether that would be a final release to consumers or an RTM, which allows businesses and resellers to start installing it, is unknown. Gates also said that he was “super-enthused about what [Windows 7] will do in lots of ways” but didn’t elaborate. What could those be? Microsoft has divulged a few things. Responding to criticism that Windows has become unnecessarily bloated, the company has 200 engineers developing a slimmed-down kernel called MinWin that uses 100 files and 25MB, compared to Vista’s 5,000 files and 4GB core and is so small it lacks a graphical subsystem. Microsoft has also confirmed that the operating system will come in consumer and business versions and in 32-bit and 64-bit editions.

Why keep 32-bit going?
Makes logical sense to advance 64-bit computing. Most computers built over the past 2 or 3 years can support 64-bit processing, so why doesnt MS see this? If MS never push the 64-bit platform, then i dont think we will see a great advance over the level of native programs that we have currently.
I see AMD and intel are pushing Multi-core to its extremes all the time, and will continue to do so. By 2009 (late) i would imagine that most computers will have at least 4gb of RAM, of which a large extension of this will be missing on a 32-bit OS.

I highly doubt most pc’s will have 4gb’s of ram by 2009.
Most pcs have upto 1gb of ram right now. How many mums and dads have need for anything other than windows XP running on 256 megs of ram.
Here in the UK, most new laptops starting from around £400 ($800) have 2gb of RAM as standard now, which was almost never the case about a year ago.
With RAM prices as they stand at the moment, you can get 4gb of RAM for a little over £50 ($100), and this has been the case for many many months. I would say by 2009 most people that built there own computer will opt for 4gb of RAM, regardless of OS.
There is a slight chance that by this time, most computer manufacturers may even put this amount into a standard system, but of course at the end of the day with technology, who knows?

My Vista Home Premium takes up 260mb of RAM maximum on idle and depending on what your using just a tiny bit more for games such as Crysis.
Everyone that says its “bloatware” have no idea what they are talking about, you just read bullsh*t and you think its all true.
Linux blows for gaming which for me, is the most important aspect.
How many of us actually “pay” for an operating system anyway.

It’s all just progression – think outside the square – who wants a system full of sh1t. Load the basics and tell it the proper specs – Non-mechanical storage, 256 bit are going to blow your mind – can you think fast enough … You ARE the slowest interface.
Windows 7 will be corrected and little visually modified version of Vista.
And none of them is worth 400 euros, because they need to be updated constantly because of the flaw in programming.

Windows Vista was hacked in 1 minutes 42 seconds right in front of Bill Gates at the Microsoft Beta testers offices at the MS Compound. They allowed MS beta testers like me to watch this and we laughed our arses off because we had told MS for over a year that VistaMe was NOT ready for release and they did not listen. Half the cool stuff they we had coded and included, Gates threw out. Like the “Glass” and the 3D effect for the desktop and the 128 bit encryption…and DONT get me started on the damn non support for the drivers or the requiring of people to buy new copies of working programs because MS was too damn stupid to include an updater in the program like they did with earlier versions.
You OBVIOUSLY have no bloody idea what you are talking about and should never have bothered to post your idiotic response as if you had bothered to check, the same dude that cracked the HD and Blueray in Europe, had Windows Vista CRACKED AND HACKED in less then 1 minute after he received a copy. I don’t get all the Vista hate. I have Vista and it works great. No complaints from me. I think all this disdain is from people whose systems can’t properly run it.
Linux is great if you feel like coding everytime you change something in your PC. However the majority of us who don’t know how to code and don’t want to spend days learning how to use Linux, not in the least because you need to learn how to use Wine if you want to game, Linux is a waste of time.
I personally am a gamer and, while XP isn’t the best and no MS OS will be because it has it comes with many a program or software to satisfy the masses who barely know how to switch a PC on, XP will do me just fine.
Also I wish you Windows fanboys wouldn’t insult Apple PC’s. Apple make great Intel PC’s and the Air Book is a great laptop once you’ve installed XP on it. So MacOS-less Apple PC’s are great, they just cost over 2x more than the same PC would cost. But then I’m sure some people don’t mind paying that kind of money to a company that is known to have a bad reputation when it comes to customer services.
Of course this will only make people bypass Vista completely and wait for Windows 7. Its like an admittance by Microsoft that Vista is a commercial disaster.
I’ve used Vista on a girlfriend’s machine and it was such a freaking aggravating experience it made me swore off Windows forever, I went out and bought a new MacBook and it’s seriously one sexy well designed machine. If you’re serious about productivity, security and performance and you’re not too fussed about gaming then Macs are really the only way to go!
i dont know what most of you dont like abt vista. for my experience, its much better than XP and all others. take for example the volume control which has a separate control for whatever application with sound that opens. and the way the processes are handled are so smoooth and much trouble free. i use coreldraw and photoshop almost 24/7 for my tutorials and i havent faced much of a problem except for small flaws in the softwares i jus mentioned. maybe most of you havent experienced it on a 3.5GB RAM with a 2.5Ghz Core 2 and a 512MB GFX card. this is the spec of my sony vaio. and i like it a lot.
anyways i wud add my point here too. if M$ is in a hurry to release W7 in 2009, they wud mess up the lil’ areas that need improvement again. take ur damn time M$ and bring out the best W7. i m ready

All the bull crap I read about Vista is what made me finally take the plunge and switch to ubuntu. And even with a new OS, it’s to late. We don’t need them and I don’t want them.
Running XP Pro SP2 on two machines and Vista SP1 on two machine at home on my network, no probs with any of the machines.
Like a lot of people have said on here, the right hardwar runs Vista smooth and easy, without any real issues.
2 x Quad Cores, each with 4gb of ram and SLI Gfx cards. Not had one single issue, more stable and reliable than XP, typing on my XP Pro mahcine, which has just had it’s second repair installation, due to explorer crashes, yet not had any isseus with Vista since day 1.
Maybe it is just the massive hardware requriements which have make people slate Vista, but working fine here.
If they do release 7 next year, lets see if it is really the Visat that was supposed to be released, most of the proposed bells and whistles were removed at launch, maybe they adding them abck in and charging to for the priveledge

Vista I do not run of have any intension of running yes I have the hardware for it but its just slow and bloated.
When 7 comes out might try it but untill my winxp box goes down which has been running for the last 1.5 years with out any problems why would I want to change it.
I always laugh at the Linux comments. You just know these people are dual booting with Windows, using virtualization, using WINE, using etc etc. 8-p
None of the operating systems to date are any better than the others. It’s all about needs. Gamers need Windows (unfortunately). Graphics pros prefer Macs, though Windows is still in the running there. It all depends on what you use your computer for.
The only thing that interested me with Vista was Bootlocker, but now that TrueCrypt supports system drive encryption I can’t find anymore reasons to justify leaving XP.
I like the development changes planned for Windows7.
The thing is that even though Vista is an ok OS it offers me nothing that XP cannot do. The transition from Win98->Win2000 made a major difference, and offered me something. It was safer, more stable even though it might have been slower. Win XP might seem like a fancy version of 2000, and it really was. But none the less the transition wasnt major (it wasnt 10 times larger than 2000 aso).
Im using Vista machines on a daily basis, and heck its an ok OS but it never impresses me and yes i will continue using XP as long as possible om my personal computer. For my customers though i recommend buying Vista.
RoFLCaKeS, one of my pc’s runs xp and idles at a little under 100mbyte of ram – so 260mb is 150% higher. 2.5 times more ram being used. I’d call that bloatware.
Telling people to upgrade their computer so they can install a OS is just stupid, the OS is merely there for them to use their computer, to have useful apps installed onto – when XP does everything vista does but on the PC they already own then 90% of the PC owning population will just ignore it. As the sales show, thankfully.
I wouldn’t think it’s likely Vista itself is going anywhere as far as being “replaced”. Windows 7 will probably be a basically featureless version of windows aimed at people (and devices) seeking basic office and itnernet functionality. Maybe even offered up to pc gamers as a better dual boot then XP. If Microsoft wants to encourage migration from XP and it’s other old OS’s, they need to do something thats middle of the road. Windows 7 will probably be the new 98 as the old 98 architecture finally vanishes forever.

any OS takes the minium of 3 to 4 years. Since they are building the kernel from the ground up I would say at least 4 years. If the Win7 comes out before the 4 year mark, they rushed the OS out the door like Vista and we all have another alpha on our hands.
Can anyone provide links to the hacks of vista? The only ones I can find are a Java hack that apparently also effects linux and MacOS and a flash hack that is a hack on a 3rd party app and not one that ships with windows.
I just passed my 70-620 vista exam (really just an intro exam) and having gone through the features of vista I think it is a good OS that is seriously underrated. I installed on my crappy Pentium M 1.86mhz 1gb RAM compaq laptop – and it runs fine! The start menu works better, the performance monitor tools and error reporting tools seem to work well. Security has improved alot with the UAC (which most XP heads seem to hate without seeing the bigger picture [I was one of them until I started studying the OS]) and also with windows defender and firewall builtin.
Its stuff like that, that makes me just think about never buying Windows, you buy one version and then a couple of years later a newer version comes out costing even more money.
If they dont stick to the current version i think its sage to say Microsoft wont be having any more money off me and im sure plenty of others will think the same.

2. This is just in reference to the testing releases (alpha, beta and RC) and not RTM so do not get your hopes up. Expect to see it available to the market 2010 or 2011.

MS gets most of the revenues from selling windows and office products to big companies and governments which are quite conservative when it comes to upgrading couple of hundreds (in some cases even thousands) systems they already have up and running just fine, you’d be surprised how many win95/2k (even win3.11) boxes with less than a 256M of RAM still exist out there.
As for the linux vs win issue, as long as Adobe, Corel, even MS doesn’t port their pro software – lotsa ppl really have no alternative. As for me, I enjoy ubuntu on my surf/chat notebook, but also have 4 winXP boxes because Adobe CS is a must in my line of work

WTF…If 64bit is so much betetr why not scrap 32bit and get moving forward. 64bit will never take hold if you keep releasing 32bit along side of it. 8 Gig RAM,
Tripple Nvidia 8800GTX SLi,
2x 1000Gig HDD’s,
2x Raptor 150Gig 10,000rpm HDD’s (for Games),
All from “PC from novatech.co.uk & extra parts from pcspecialist.co.uk” for £2240 in total.
But this machine will last 5yrs easy and Vista, on this machine. ROCKS! Stable, Fast, Loading times of about 0seconds. I just love it. Only rubbish thing i got now is 19″ WS Monitor. New one coming in Summer. Couldnt have had a 32bit OS cuz would have been limited to a small & pathetic 3gig of RAM. and XP 64bit only recognized 7Gig of ram (BIOS Problem??) Anyways, 8Gig on 64bit Vista Ultimate, !!!!! unbeleivable !!!!!
Anyways, i just saying this cuz Vista’s only rubbish cuz every1 got rubbish PC’s… On my machine, Vista is perfect. Only problem I had was drivers for the Tripple-SLi 3D. But all sorted now (took 3days).

People are asking the wrong questions. Vista has many built-in restrictions and faults, but in a couple of years forum threads like this one won’t matter. The question you should be asking is, what can you not do with winxp that you would like to be able to do with Win7, and why is it that those things cannot be implemented in XP? Radical changes in the OS can upset the userbase that wants an update but wants a shallow learning curve as well. Win7 will still not be “better” than winxp. The only reason to switch is because M$ will stop updating it or artificially cripple it. XP has been out for 6 years – longer than any other OS MS ever released. People have gotten used to it. Of course, If it were up to me, I would open source winxp at the release of windows 7 and let the community turn it into as many flavours as there are linux flavours.
I use winxp for games only, and I still regret having to get rid of win2k… it was my darling ms OS… but many games would not work on it.
These days, I juggle different *Nix distributions for everything other than games

I prefer Vista myself but I put it through its paces on a second pc before I made the change on my main pc.

Yo, DWEEB! I am running a dual core 4GHz cpu with 3GB of memory and over 2 TB of hard drive space on my testing maching…and I could NOT get Vista to run correctly on it. Now since I have been testing programs longer then you have been out of diapers, you want to try to say that again?

2. This is just in reference to the testing releases (alpha, beta and RC) and not RTM so do not get your hopes up. Expect to see it available to the market 2010 or 2011.

This OS started testing less then 4 months BEFORE VistaMe went to the stores. Any tester will tell you that the second a product hits the shelves, they start work on the NEXT version, and sometimes they are doing two at once! Just like they did with Adobe Photoshop CS3 and now there is a CS4 less then 8 months after the release of the CS3.

Just because Vista uses more hard drive and RAM doesn’t mean it’s bloatware. How many games have you downloaded recently can fit on a single CD? Halo 2 on PC is around 10 times the size of the original Halo and I don’t see a lot of people complaining. Fact of the matter is newer software will always be more resource-hungry than older ones. Stick with the times, this isn’t 2001.

Markuz, I don’t think very many people care tbh – for a start anything over 4gb of ram just won’t be utilised in a home setting so you wasted your time there. plus the overkill you have on your machine doesn’t help it play games back any better than other machines. nor does it help extend the life of your system, by the time games come out needing new hardware then your system will be as much use as a 386 with 256k onboard graphics. Your PC plays crysis at the same level as a PC that costs half the price – why would ANYONE be jealous of that?

The reason they kicked it up was because of all the bad press VistaMe was getting and the cottage industry that sprang up removing VistaMe from new computers and replacing it with XP. Microsoft has taken a major bath on this and has spent more money trying to get people to accept this then they have made from sales.
THAT is why you WILL see a new Microsoft OS next year.

Aww, whats wrong binky? mad because I have a better computer then you do? Most everyone here has a better computer then you do. I have beta tested every MS OS from 98 on…so when you say that you like any of them…you are thanking me and others like me. So go ahead and pop a blood vessel as if you are using a MS OS, I had a hand in creating it.
And unless my math is pretty much gone, I suspect that my WD Caviar 400GB C drive and my 4 500GB WD hard drives do in fact equal over 2TB as I said. And add that to my 3GB of memory with a Sound Blaster X-FI audio card and my 3d graphics card with 256mb on board memory and my 4GHz dual core cpu with 1200 front side bus….does indeed whip your commodore computer to shame. Toss in my 18 to 20MBPS download business account from Road Runner that I get for $80 a month and we now see exactly how jealous you are of this machine. And Binky, I dont have the fastest one on this board as there are others that have faster machines then mine.
So please go back and play on your commodore 64 that you got from goodwill and leave the rest of us with decent machines to talk with each other as it is way past your bedtime.
The official release date has been set to June 2010.

Hardware has surpassed software 3 fold. Its time for a software revolution something different. Not just a normal boring O.S. Linux, windows(Cracked,never pay for s.h.i.t),Unix/all shells and Macz. All more or less the same, there must be 1000 different o.s’s all do the same.
A boring GUI and run some programs………..
In 10 years O.S’s will be no more. Mere Sub systems!!
Have now had Vista Ultimate 64bit for 6 months. Have not had a problem in the world. In my opinion, is more stable than xp ever wil be but yes, Vista does take up more resources and space.

Has not crshed once. Only qualm I have is that Creative have not written up new code for their X-Fi cards to run applications in 64 bit. They have the drivers but thats about it.

7 is going back to the original system numbering. counting 1,2,3 (3.1), i think 95 & 98 were 4, maybe nt too.. then XP is 5, and vista 6, now 7..
this means it is “supposed” to be a different opertaing system, not a tweaked vista…well, as different as vista was from xp or xp from 98…you get the idea…

I bought a $1000USD Acer laptop less than a month ago, and have already uninstalled vista for XP. I built my desktop and ran vista for 3 months(pirated) , thought the legit might be better, but no.
Vista sucks. get over it.

not true gman. I started on PCs 15 years ago, then went to make for 2-3 yrs, then back to pc.
if you just want something that works. you get online, watch a movie, do work, and it works. no crashes, no problems. get a mac.
now that sounds definitive. but mac is not as open as pc. software, hardware, and periphs’ that work on pc don’t work on mac. mac has few good gaes, and they always come out late.
if you enjoy the scene, and you enjoy screwing around and learning more from your machine, you enjoy playing games, and aren’t SCARED of fixing a problem when it arises, go pc.

I believe you forgot Digital Rights Managment … so it should be work + plainess + basic computer use + security + your computer saying “no, sorry DRM isn’t going to let you do that” = MAC
I used to swear by mac’s… now I hate them, I won’t go into the reasons as they are long and have been covered numerous times.
I’d say “yay… another ms operating system” if I knew they werent going to embed DRM software into every possible aspect of the OS. Even now, Vista is riddled with drm restrictions. Hopefully in the future Microsoft and Apple will see the error of their ways pushing DRM software down every body’s throats. This is the only plus I have for Linux flavours… but other than that… Linux is slightly more stable than Windows XP/Vista and Mac X but you cant really do anything with it except run opensource programs (I have nothing against opensource.)
But on the other hand… you can run alot of opensource programs on Windows as well as Mac… So for now I’ll stick with my XP pro boxes… and wait to see what microsoft will try with they’re new OS, maybe they’ll put it on a bit of a diet…..
