Rumour: Next-gen iPhone with wireless radio

According to the latest build of the iPhone firmware 3.0, the next-gen iPhone – known as iPhone 3.1 in the documentation – will use Broadcom’s BCM4329 chipset, bringing with it the potential of improved WiFi performance and radio functionality.  The BCM4329 adds support for WiFi draft-n, together with power saving features and not just an FM receiver but a transmitter also. The presence of an FM transmitter could mean that next-gen iPhone owners will be able to dump the third-party radio transmitters and stream music short-range directly to their car stereos.

As for the improved WiFi functionality, as well as draft-n support the BCM4329 also includes compatibility with MIMO multi-antenna signal technology, 5GHz network support and channel bonding, which can couple two channels so as to boost throughput. The existing iPhone 3G and iPod touch use the Broadcom BCM4325, which supports WiFi b/g and has an FM receiver.  However Apple have locked down the latter so that it will only receive signals from the Nike+ exercise accessory.  It remains to be seen whether the company will do the same with the FM capabilities of the newer Broadcom chipset in their newest smartphone.

You want working smartphone with FREE features and customizable by user? Get Nokia N97 or Samsung Omnia HD… steer clear of this piece of useless junk…

I have totally lost all my faith in Apple, and I used to be somewhat of an fanboy… well all the good things must end sometimes

I have a windows mobile phone (HTC Fuze) and a Iphone 3g. If you need business functionality grab yourself a HTC phone. If you want a phone for every day use, and one that is a blast to use grab a Iphone! I'm looking forward to purchasing the new Iphone, I may finally have all the features I need to make it my primary phone.

To all those that have negativity towards the Iphone, don't bother spouting BS when you've never even owned the phone.

    /end rant

  16. I-phone is JUNK
    April 6th, 2009 | 18:27

my I-phone is junk just a $400 brick. I uploaded my own movies to the I-phone and it stopped working a day later. I broaght it to the I-store and they told me because I put my own software and changed theres there is nothing they can do to help me. I didnt even put my own software, just two HD movies. My old phone had no problems doing this. My advice, stay away from the I-phone.

I might actually get an iphone this time, the os is great but the lack of basic features has put me off in the past, the first iphone didn't support 3g, the second iphone had missing stuff like mms and copy and paste which was a joke (I know its there now, but it took a year). I think a fully featured phone available on more than one network is they way to go, otherwise I'm getting an N97

    @ 19

Then why is it that 83% of iphone owners reported problems within the first 3 monts? f-gg-t.

The iPhone is a great lifestyle phone but when it comes to getting things done it's a fail. Yes it's style over function but people (obviously) like that and are willing to pay a premium for the privilege of being seen with one. What's great about the device is how it's shaken up the previously lethargic cellphone industry, it's a real kick up the arse and will lead to some great stuff down the line – not the BB Bold though, that's just rubbish.

What pisses me off is how proprietary and monopolistic Apple are with all their products, yet all seems to be forgiven when it comes in a nice box with a fancy looking interface.

Hopefully Android will take off and prove that keeping your product open is the way to go these days. But that relies on phone manufacturers to step up and make great phones for it, which none have done so far. Apple is a smart company, they live on design innovation and all these fat lazy companies like Samsung, Nokia, etc, etc still don't get it.

BTW, I use a BB because I need to get things done, but I have an Ipod Touch because I can't resist shiny things either, even if it makes me feel like a shallow fool sometimes.

I just upgraded to the BlackBerry 8330. Its a pretty amazing device. Because I was a new contract I got it for 100 dollars. Its original price was 700. As far as the phone pictured above I heard that the touch screen sometimes freezes and has slow response. But Im sure the experience is different for everyone.

iPhone would be great if it's not AT&T dependent. I wan't my own SIM card in it, working, without hacking that goddamn phone.

    April 6th, 2009 | 21:26

I still use the 1st gen iphone I don't see any reason to upgrade to 3g because it's exactly the same other then being on a 3g network which I don't really need anyways because I use prepaid and i'm sure this one will be the same deal.Wireless radio is nice but not enough to make me throw $600 for a new phone when I have wifi radio

I heard the next Iphone could be used as a universal remote on any tv,dvd player etc. I think that would be pretty sick.

My HTC Touch Diamond and pretty much the rest of the HTC line up have been able to do this for a while now.

I love seeing these iPhone features trumped up like they do, knowing someone else has already been doing it for quite some time.

i love how everybody says "after u jailbreak it, it works fine "… massive fail

why would u waste time and money on this when there are so many better phones who work from the start => meaning no jailbreaking, messing with software, and better functionality…

Wasn't the whole point of the iPod family to break away from the regular radio? Why incorporate it again? Apple = Reinventing the wheel
