RLSLOG search: Google or Custom?

I’ve changed the search form in the right menu from a custom in-house search to Google Search. The reason for this was that standard Wordpress search is sometimes not working too well, displaying totally irrelevant results. I received few complaints about it, however, after the change to Google, another group of people sent me a feedback that they don’t like the new search engine. The main reason is that Google doesn’t sort the results according to the time of post, as the old search did.

Please vote in the poll displayed in the right menu or leave a feedback here in comments and we will decide which one is the way to go.

UPDATE: OK, I guess it’s more than obvious the majority of our visitors prefer the old Custom search so I will switch back to it. You can always use Google with one extra “rlslog” keyword after all…

Custom. Even though it shows some weird results, it’s still better having the results sorted according to the time of post.

    Google is better!!!

Was surprised today when i searched something and found it on FIRST place. Usually i found what im looking for at 3-4 place
So my vote goes to G ;)

Google seems to display more relevant results, as you mentioned. If you can find a way to sort by age/popularity/etc, then it would be superior, IMO.

What this site REALLY needs though, is a button to block out TV posts- you know, like that OTHER site just recently added.

It’s just a suggestion, but I’ve recently been going there more than here because of I hate having to sift through three pages of TV shows to get to something interesting.

Why do you guys even waste space posting TV shows anyways? Isn’t that what eztv.it is for?

i’d have to go with custom as well, i ‘think’ the issue with wordpress default search engine, at least in my experience with it, is that it searches the user comments as well so it appears to return a false positive unless you read all the comments that users have posted and see that someone posted something that pertains to your search request. But I really would like to see some narrowing options to browsing, sometimes people don’t have time to check the site every hour and end up having to go through several pages of irrelevant posts if they are gone for anymore than a day, it makes sense to have some way of viewing only categories that pertain to your own intrests

    My vote: “Old – custom”

If someone wants google search just simply write “site:rlslog.net +[term]

    example:
    site:rlslog.net +The.Mummy.Tomb.Of.The.Dragon.Emperor

    http://www.google.pl/search?hl=pl&q=site%3Arlslog.net+%2BThe.Mummy.Tomb.Of.The.Dragon.Emperor&btnG=Szukaj+w+Google&lr=

I was trying to find an older standup release last night (deleted my entire downloads folder by accident/stupidity, don’t ask) and found the search results were AWFUL, absolutely useless returns and after 5 pages I still couldn’t fine it. a quick search on another site got it instantly and I then searched it out by exact title on RLSLOG and found it.

Stick to your old ways, Google sux the big hairbag.

  64. Departure
    November 27th, 2008 | 22:19

    Id say custom.
And as some ppl mensioned, it would be MASTER to have Custom, sort to date.

Ow and TV shows, good u post them, I now now when they’re out.
But U can leave the thumbnail or picture in my opinion, it’s filling to much. and therefore makes it so full, and annoying.
I’d say put the name of the release, maybe an own comment, and a routine addition, time bitrate releasename, etc etc.
That would improve the TV-Show posting section drasticly!
Just my 2 ct’s to keep the readers happy!

Can’t believe I am going to do this because it always bugs me when people complain but something about this hit a nerve.. I feel I just have to say it so here goes, ( and again please allow me to apologize in advance)

What in the !@$!#$!# are you guys thinking over there?!?!?!
A google search??? If I wanted to search using google I would go to Google…You said people asked for that…?.. so obviously that means there are people who dont know how to do it on thier own so I decided to write some custom directions to help out those that need it.

    #1. go to google

    #2. search.

I have put more detailed instructions below for those who need it.
I have also recorded a quick instructional video that is available free of charge for those that need it also,
( to get yours please go to
http://www.ifIamthefutureweareallroyalyscrewed dot com and request a video by yelling your address to your computer screen)

    #1. go to google
#2 using the mouse you are going to put the mouse (the plastic one that came with the computer not the one real one living in your wall)on top of the mouse pad .
#3. moving it around you want to make the cursor stop on top of the box that says search .
#4 click the left mouse button ( remember to hold your hands up to use the trick that reminds you which is left and which is right if you don’t know)
#5.type in the words on the movie poster you saw

etc etc it’s late and has been a long day so I can’t be as smarta@@ed and thorough as I am normally but hopefully you get the point.

next time before you do something you think is great it can’t hurt to brainstorm with a friend ..and if you did and that friend agreed then you need to find a smart friend because if I have learned anything as a paramedic it is this.

1 dumb person can live a semi long life if they have a smart friend around to stop them frrom doing something dumb..
2 dumb friends together only get dead and usually from something really ignorant like drinking rubbing alcohol

@ 113 (S.M.): I’m having trouble with #3. I’m holding my mouse in front of the monitor & waving it around, but the cursor wont move so i cant get it onto the box that says search. And before you ask, yes i am using my plastic mouse that came with computer (the other one bit me & ran away).

I find if i bang the mouse on the desk then the cursor jumps about a bit, but its hard to control where it goes.

I choose old school. Thanks for its return.

Google box got results, but wasnt able to get what i wanted, since it pulled so many results.

    Option would be nice.

    peace

Have a radio button so users can choose. The code for this is quite simple and is implemented on a few sites.

    Hi

Please make a custom search that returns full articles when used like this:

    http://rlslog.net/?s=%20&cat=2,4,11,14,19,22

Alternatively, please make the categories selectable with checkboxes!
Look here how to do that:

    Greets,
I usually hate sites that uses google as inside search, so I would vote for custom.

A tip for those that prefer google is to use this syntax in google search:
    site:rlslog.net “keyword”

This will limit the displayed results to this site only.

Google Custom Search filters the results better. It don’t give us the results by time. But if got it more rapidly what’s the need to know the time they were posted??
