Releaselog

RLSLOG on new servers!

I finally finished the move of RLSLOG to new servers. You could have noticed few posts about this a week or two ago, but we couldn’t finish it until now due to certain hardware issues. The server move should result in better loading speed of Releaselog and more stability. We changed our hosting provider and upgraded hardware as well. The new host also has much better support and seems to be less ignorant about takedown requests. For all you tech geeks, our current setup is:

HTTP Server
Quad Core Xeon X3320, 2.5GHz, 2×3MB, 1333FSB
4GB (2×2GB Dual Rank DIMMs) 667MHz
500 GB SATA2 HDD

SQL Server
PE R200 Dual Core Xeon 3065 (2.33GHz, 4MB, 1333MHz FSB)
4GB (2×2GB Dual Rank DIMMs) 667MHz
500 GB SATA2 HDD

+ terabytes of bandwith…

This is a significant upgrade of both servers from our previous Core2Duo and Athlon X2 setup. The new servers might need a bit of tweaking and finetuning but it’s already much faster, as the hardware performance almost doubled with the new setup. Enjoy it!

@12 – Yeah it's the same for me. This site used to be as fast as hell.

I think it's because of the adverts, for example img.kelkoo.com !

No RAID? Then it's disaster waiting to happen. What will you guys do when a hard drive fails?

All my dedicated servers have RAID 1 and it saved me twice already due to one of the drives failing.

  23. maD
    February 11th, 2009 | 15:49

@21 – It's the same for me, I love Releaselog, but I can't stand how slow it is.

@22 – I agree 100%, RAID is a must have for many big websites.

Idont know wheather it was a good move or not?
Site is Soooo slow ,at least 20 secs to load a page, and thats with a 22 meg connection.

  25. Bazz
    February 11th, 2009 | 16:04

Yep much slower 22 secs to open a page, it's got to be all these ridiculous adverts.

  27. Beaulieu
    February 11th, 2009 | 16:27

To all those complaining about the adverts

You obviously don't now what your talking about.

adblock+ as always blocked all the ads on this site

It's the most well known add-on to mozilla firefox. You don't need to look very far to get it.

Now please get to know your things before complaining.

I am using Firefox and AdBlock+ and I am getting about 25secs to load each page and I have a 20meg connection.
The new servers have slowed the site down for me and if it gets much worse I will be off to pastures new

@23 got the same thing here. the loading times where much faster before probs with the prev host, but as said in the article maybe it just needs a little tweaking :)

    hi,
You Need to switch from SATA2 to SCSI Hard Drives on the SQL server
als make sure you install some php caching on the web server like
    eAccelerator

Ok, i am verry happy to hear that you are still improving your baby Martin.

    But…:

    1. As some guys mentioned RAID1 is a must have for that kind of services.

    2. Pictures on the site are extremly slow loading plus…very ofet like…70% of them do not load at all – there are just small empty squares in the places where should be a picture.

    3. Good job! for me site run much faster :)

agree with post 35 bman about moving to SCSI disks.
    also, agree with RAID.

    hope things continue to improve.

    February 11th, 2009 | 18:08

Speed is fine from the UK for me.

Ads are easily blocked, use IEPro for IE and Adblock+ for Firefox. On top of that get a hosts file with well known ad servers blocked using loopbakc (127.0.0.1).

  43. Antakar
    February 11th, 2009 | 18:17

SCSI – is too old, no one currently sets up servers based on that.
People are going for SAS and SATAII in raid 0+1 or RAID5 – SATA are really efficient are sufficient for hosting a website.

    SCSI is outdated.

  44. ThaRudeDude
    February 11th, 2009 | 18:24

The loading time of an average site here on rlslog is like 30 secs, from my point of view at least 25 secs too much ;)
but with only a sata hdd no wonder.
as said before, pictures are loading extremly slow or not at all.
i think this site is great but i also hope that the speeds can be going back to "normal".

    February 11th, 2009 | 18:36

Pictures are hosted off site so there's the problem.

I'd switch the HTTP server for the SQL server. SQL is where all the power is needed, the http server only needs to serve up the pages (if you do cache right php will have to do minimal processing).

  47. stuart
    February 11th, 2009 | 18:56

The site itself loads fine, but photos and junk of the releases take 30 seconds to load for me. I usually have time to start downloading my favorite shows and move on to the next page before I even see the photos load.

    just out of curiosity,

what are the daily unique hits for rlslog now up to?

and how much does this new server service cost?

  50. Anon
    February 11th, 2009 | 19:10

For people whining about how long the pictures take to load..

If you mean the pictures as in like DVD cover pictures..

They're not hosted on rlslog servers..

  51. aaa
    February 11th, 2009 | 19:12

Its extremly slow for me too.

Maybe the new host preferes some countries over others? Dunno. Is there anyone from germany, that has fast load-times?

  52. anon
    February 11th, 2009 | 19:19

Slower for me too using FF with Adblock+

    Was much faster before.

May be an idea to turn output buffering on (if not already) and the use compression on the pages before outputting them.

If it is already, then there may be a php module that isn't installed on the new server such as gzip etc

Alas I find myself more and more on the sceneddl site these days

  53. Cpt. Obvious
    February 11th, 2009 | 19:24

Wow… you're only now getting into quad core servers? I've had a quad desktop (AMD 9850) for almost 4 months.

If I had the budget, I'd get a quad socket (TYAN- google the brand) motherboard running 4 quad core CPUS.

I've seen it done, and it is freaking fast.
    =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
It just really surprises me that I've got a desktop system that's more powerful than your web server.

Well, when I get my new RAM, it will be :D

In addition to my post @ 53

It seems that bigimage.com is the bottleneck here as half their images take an age to load if at all.

You really should host your own images instead of relying on third party sites

    Just my two pennies worth

  55. bob
    February 11th, 2009 | 19:35

seems a waste of time, you may have sorted the down time and crashing (which forced me to close my forum account, warez-bb.org is the worlds best for me.)

the loading time for this site is now rediculously slow. i wont be coming here again.

  56. aaa
    February 11th, 2009 | 19:38

    @53:

moron! As if a WebServer would need CPU-Power… -.-
a server has other work to do than your gaming and surfing pc.

if i'd build a server i'd invest in fast server-hard-drives, RAM, FSB and so on…

My only complaint is about the loading of images. I don't reside in the US or any other first world country and so my bandwidth is limited to less than 1 Mbps. This should be enough for browsing, but your editors don't seem to care about <strong>optimizing</strong> and <strong>proper linking</strong> of images. As a result, my experience (user experience) browsing through your site diminishes over time mainly due to those images not loading or taking too much time to load.

I propose that the site owner at least hold a conference to its editors and its upcoming editors on how to optimize and place or hotlink images properly. Photoshop's "Save for Web" feature should be a good start.

I hope editors would take the extra effort of optimizing and double-checking their linked images.

  59. anon

A good website/blogsite takes the onus off it's editors staff etc by utilising good methods and built-in functions to handle and optimise where necessary all submitted content

More nfo! :P What kind of mobo are your servers using? (Would also be interesting to know what chassis you are using, if you have redundant psu's etc.) **

Do you store entire articles in the sql-database? How large is your SQL-database?

Would be nice with some SAS-drives for the SQL-server, too bad its so expensive. ;| (Would be cool if you could load the newest additions to the SQL-database to the RAM(since the whole database would be to large), and move it to the HDD when it gets for example over one week old… (Damn, I'm smart..))

But, really not even software-mirroring. *afraid* :O

  70. Joe
    February 18th, 2009 | 12:35

Might want to consider raid drive setup. With a high traffic site like this, if the drive goes bad it will take hours to put in a new one. with raid one can go bad and the site keeps chumming.

But the real issue isn't how strong the servers are, it's wordpress lol. It's not very good for thousands of articles. I have a wordpress site with 50,000 articles and it's slower than molasses on a quadcore 8gb ram server.
