Rise Of The Video Game S01E05 DSRip XviD-aAF

Here is an other release from yesterday; level 5 of the video game series. Level 5 is the final episode in the series. The episode addresses issues such as idiots who think that gamers can’t tell the difference between a video games and real life; the ability to reinvent oneself virtually and people who spend more time online then they do on real life. (if you have a second second life, you have no life :( ) The only real criticism I have about this show is its running time. At 42 minutes for each episode, it seems to be too long to watch, a 23 minute version would be better.

The advent of the Internet has changed everything — including videogames. When ARPNET, a military precursor to the Internet, went live in 1969, gamers almost immediately began using this new technology for gaming. But what began as text-based adventure games called MUDs (multi-user dungeons) quickly evolved into graphic-based online adventure games called MMOs (massively multi-player online games). Millions worldwide have battled together and against one another in the latest genre of videogame. From Ultima Online to the most successful MMO of all time, World of Warcraft, gamers now are attracted to virtual second lives as they battle friends and foes across the globe from the safety of their home computers. In the virtual world, gamers have found they can be anyone or anything. The ability to reinvent oneself virtually has become an irresistible experience for many, and has some critics wondering whether the line between the real world and the virtual world has become dangerously blurred. Many gamers spend more time in the virtual world than the real world, but they argue that the virtual experiences of MMOs are still human experiences simply delivered via the latest wave of technology — the videogame. This episode includes interviews with Cory Ondrejka (chief technology officer at Linden Lab) and Richard Bartle (British writer and game researcher best known for being the co-author of MUD).

What about people, who are spending more time to annoy people who are “spending more time online”. Instead they can research to end hunger, a way to stop wars, a way to protest guns, cure for cancer, fight against aids, human rights in many countries, fight against media lies etc. No, those are not problems. Problem is people who choose to spend their time online, blame them.
    Goddamn dumbasses!

    Argh This show SUCKS!

After being a MMO gamer I know my way around them, and I wish I didn’t for the entertainment value in this episode was horrible!

Unfortunately I have played lots of asian MMOG. They are very sad, I am glad there are more western MMOs coming out nowa days.

They just tell you about Project Entropia (Which has been mentioned and explained about in far too many “game docs”), that stupid Second Life crap (Most of the show was about r3tards in this graphically pathetic garbage bag) and then a brief intro to WOW.
When they were talking about MMO graphics they were actually showing the world of warcraft intro cinematic… Can you believe these people!? Not to mention the fact that the same footage was replayed OVER and OVER… So much videos about seriously graphically outdated games like everquest being repeated over and over throughout the show!

They even forget to mention any next gen mmos, or any of the other largely popular MMOs like EVE online (Currently boasting best graphics for an MMO) but then they tell you about this horrifyingly poor mess of an MMO nobody has heard about that I can’t even remember.
They also interview this annoying asian guy, that says this: “an MMO is a Massivly Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game”. So ignorant!

    Outdated and POORLY presented!

Still… They should of just stuck with the history of games, and completely forget the MMO world. An entire episode of repeated material which overall isn’t very entertaining or informative.

I don’t think I have ever watched something about something I like (games) which was just so boring…
It makes me feel really bad for people that know nothing of the MMO world.
This show just screwed them over. I don’t even want to play MMOs anymore…

Also I would like add that they use alot of console game videos and pc games which are not even remotely MMO.
I want to stab the producer of this show with a Noob Knife(tm).

I have a problem with this sentence. “From Ultima Online to the most successful MMO of all time, World of Warcraft”

#1. its not by far the most succesfull MMO game.
#2. EVE online has made more money than WOW has. so WoW fails in ROI category, considering EVE staff has used only a fraction of the funding used for WoW.
#3. WOW has aprox 9 million players. even runescape can beat that with 14 million. not to mention Perfect World which has 30+ million players ( the original one not the newly launched malesian version). therefore you can say WoW fails to be the most succesfull in atracting the gamers.

so what basis is there for calling the Wicked Ordeal for Whiners the most succesfull MMO game ;) just wanna ask.

Sad thing is that this is for some people the hard truth. There are some people who can’t tell the difference, and there are people who have no life outside of ‘the internet’ and thus have no physical companionship ever! But that’s not something where games/computers are to blame, it’s the people themselves who live this way.

It’s like with guns. Guns don’t kill people, but people kill people. Same with computers and games.

Why isn’t there a “Star Trek Universe” MMOG ?
    So expensive license costs?

Anyhow, the other episodes where much better (Even they didn’t mention “Operation Flashpoint”). This episode is a waste.

But I liked the episode where “JFK Reloaded” was mentioned – didn’t even know that game. Real fun. :-)

Vanny, they are actually developing a star trek MMOG right now.

Yeah this show is epicly stupid… They messed up the history of gaming too… Didnt even mention the SNES :p

Thx Mr.X, I love this show

@14, where do you get your numbers? They are way off. World of Warcraft is by far the most successful MMO, with the most paying subscribers.

    http://www.mmogchart.com/Chart1.html

World of Warcraft brings in more money then every other pay per month MMO combined!

Not my kind of game really, see here:

But I’m ashamed to point out that the opening for Deus Ex: Invisible War (a rather crappy FPS sequel) was used in a show primarily about MMOs, lol.

Damn, I wish this series had more episodes. It wasn’t very well edited (like the looping footage of just a handful of games), but it was still interesting.
