LEVEL FOUR: Ever since the invention of the computer, man has feared “the machine” and its ability to think. But a computer’s unique computational power has also led to the development of unpredictable, intelligent and malleable games. “God games,” like SimCity and Civilization, simulate entire worlds and let players experiment with cause and effect. As the 1990s dawned, global turmoil forced gamers to find solace in the world of videogames — a virtual world that offered control at a time when the real one seemed dangerously out of control. Now, videogames have become tools for learning and creative expression. Players use games like Halo and Unreal Tournament 3 to tell their own stories via Machinima or through custom content that is shared with others over the Internet. The line between producer and customer has forever blurred — further proof that videogames are destined to become the dominant form of entertainment. This episode features Will Wright (creator of SimCity, The Sims and Spore), Sid Meier (who developed the game series Civilization) and John Brennan (voice actor from the Jerky Boys and Family Guy).

one of the most informative shows i have seen in a long time.
was good to see some of the real old skool consoles and games.
btw – anyone remember dragons lair (personally my fav game of all time) it was so ahead of its time and today still looks fresh and new.
@8 getyourown,
I’ve downloaded a couple files with the MovieX tracker included and uTorrent said the tracker was working. No errors, no message about only being allowed to seed. Of course most of the time, I get the no leeching message. So their tracker does allow non-members to “leech” at least some of the time.
@9 bigbadstew,
Yes, I remember Dragon’s Lair, and DL2 and Space Ace. I think a comment I once read in a magazine sums these games up pretty well; “They’re more fun to watch than they are to play.” I never got the chance to try any of them in the arcades, but I had the home versions of the DL games for the C64 and Space Ace for the Amiga. They were nothing but pure frustration. The actions you needed to take were completely random. Some tentacles you can slash with the sword, but others you have to jump away from? Some enemies you can shoot, but others you have to duck? Granted, I realize that the laserdisc graphics were a large part of the appeal and the home versions at the time couldn’t match them, but the gameplay was still largely the same. It was nothing more than memorizing patterns to see pre-recorded scenes.
