Rise Of The Video Game S01E01 PDTV XviD-SSTV

The five part series, Rise of the Video Game, examines the evolution of the video game and its cultural impact of the world of entertainment today. The first episode in the series titled ‘Level One’ starts off at the beginning of the video game evolution. Cold war technology brought the development of advanced computer technology. This new computer technology was use to develop the first video game in 1958 - Tennis for Two. The space race and the vietnam war led to the development of Space War! and the two first video game giants - Nolan Bushnell and Atari. A post WWII Japan led to even furthering of electronic technology which led to the golden age of video games. Famous people interviewed include the Pac-Man designer, Steve Russell, Nolan Bushnell, and Ralph Baer.

Level One: In the 1950s, the Cold War quickly evolved between the world superpowers of the United States and the Soviet Union. Mutually assured destruction enforced an uneasy stalemate, yet also drove computer technology to create missile simulations to predict the results of a nuclear war. This same computer technology was used to develop the first computer game in 1958 — Tennis for Two. The Space Race and the Vietnam war coincided with Steve Russell’s game Space War! and the emergence of the first true giants in the video game business — Nolan Bushnell and Atari. In post-World War II Japan, electronics and computer technology emerged to rebuild a land and economy devastated by the atomic bomb. Space Invaders and Pac-Man soon followed, and the golden age of video games was born. Among others, individuals featured in this episode include Steve Russell, Nolan Bushnell, Ralph Baer (considered by many to be the inventor of the video game) and Toru Iwatani (Pac-Man designer). Video games emerged as a form of entertainment where the player was in control, as opposed to the more passive diversion of watching television.

    I’m watching this right now and it’s very good.
    Keep in mind that it’s very good on a Discovery Channel level.
    For once they did a bit of research on a subject instead piecing together bits and pieces found online.
    Now where did I hide my old Atari2600…
    I suddenly get a strong urge to play Pong again :P

    I saw the show yesterday, and it ways way interesting if you’re a gamer ofcourse. And to hikaricore it’s not about who or where, but it’s more about how video games are a expressive art form describing the period of time they’re made. Recommended for everyone.

    Sure will continue watching the show! peace

    I guess Discovery ran out of “top ten biggest penis shaped buildings that fell down and killed at least 300 people.” Discovery is dead to me. Shame, they used to be good a decade ago.

    @24 miracle,

    Whether you can download from a news server for free or not depends on what your ISP provides. Many provide some newsgroup access, but it often sucks. Why? Because running a proper news server means getting feeds from mulitple sources and dealing with data in excess of 4 Terabytes a day. Typical ISP news servers will miss half the parts and cycle stuff off in less than a day. Some ISPs outsource to a professional news provider. Those have great newsgroup access.

    Regardless of what your ISP provides, you can pay for your own account with dozens of professional newsgroup providers. You can even buy blocks of credit from a company called Astraweb and use it your convenience. $25 will get you 90GB. Or $15 a month will get you unlimited downloads that go back almost 4 months.

    Also, downloading from newsgroups, even if you pay for a personal account, is virtually 100% risk-free. Many servers don’t even log downloads, only uploads (for abuse purposes) and even if they do, the only ones who can see those logs without a court order are the server administrators. Even in the unlikely event that the RIAA/MPAA got a company to turn over their logs, there would be millions of downloads and it wouldn’t be worth their time or effort to sue people who weren’t distributing anything.

    I suggest you read the following guide. It covers all aspects of getting started with newsgroups, with links to news providers and programs.

    http://www.slyck.com/ng.php

    Finally, I should mention that while the above guide covers all aspects of downloading and uploading files, the newsgroups are also used for discussions. There are groups that are purely devoted to text messages (kind of like a website forum, but more sophisticated) and even the binary (file) newsgroups are used for talking to each other. Say you’re looking for something specific, you can post a message to the appropriate group and someone may post it for you.

    Let me know if you need more help. :)

    About the show,

    I’ll definitely be downloading this. I just hope that they don’t gloss over the various systems that helped develope video games into what they are today. Too often, video game history is represented as;

    Early efforts > arcade games > Atari > Nintendo > PC > Playstation 2 > Xbox.

    Many thx for info Rekrul, I’d like to check out newsgroups eventually as well.

    Hopefully they also cover the first TEXT games. From text-based Lunar Lander on 8″ IMB5110’s, to Zork on 5.25″! If they miss out the text stuff, it’s so incomplete!

    Memories… ^_^

    Just watched it - or as much of it as I could stand.

    Another silly docu-tainment series from Discovery. Nothing about the original text games or the evolution of computers in the home..

    Just flashy graphics, light on detail, heavy on relating everything to war, the space race, anything that goes boom or has flashing lights.

    What’s the story with documentaries these days? It’s like they assume we’ll change channels if a single shot is more than 10 seconds long.

    Had high hopes for this one. Then again, that’s computer games for you. :)

    watched it…and was bored to death.
    lame timejumps from 1982 Atari to 1993… no mention of C64 or Amiga. And WAY too many war analogies.
