A decent British action movie Rise of the Footsoldier is now available in a nice dvd screener quality thanks to group DoNE. This story about criminals and hooligans directed by Julian Gilbey was released as a limited title, but it seems to be very popular at least in the United Kingdom (not by critics though, 14% at RT). There’s a fairly annoying non-blurred black timestamp at the top of the image. Enjoy this high quality 2 CD release!
Rise of the Footsoldier follows the inexorable rise of Carlton Leach from one of the most feared generals of the football terraces to becoming a member of a notorious gang of criminals who rampaged their way through London and Essex in the late eighties and early nineties. It is three decades of his life following him from football hooliganism, through to his burgeoning career as a bouncer, his involvement in the criminal aspects of the early ‘rave’ scene and subsequently to his rise to power as one of the most feared and respected criminals in the country. The story concludes with three members of his firm being brutally murdered in the infamous shot-gun slaying at Rettenden.

To save you messing about with the codec settings I would recommend you just save it as an ‘Uncompressed’ AVI file, then use AutoGK or DivX Convertor (or similar software) to recode the movie for you.
I have only used a single pass for demonstration purposes, a 2x pass encode will give you quality, this was just for speed.

I just have one question; why do people download DVDRips and
why does rlslog post them. i mean they’re lower in
resolution, have a lower bitrate, no or less subtitles, lower bitrate audio, and no menus. And why would you want to download this and stretch it out on your 1600×1200 monitor… Those of you that download this and use a 1 pass encoding program such as convertx, shame on you.
We should all just download DVD5 and/or DVD9 releases because they are the best quality until you get the hd version.

@38… I use ConvertX. I’m also watching these movies on a crappy 24″ Walmart TV with the TV’s stereo speakers… one of which is blown! How good do I need a rip to be in order to meet the maximum of my current video-audio capabilities?

Well it doesn’t matter whether your tv is “crappy” or not becuase it still displays 720×480 or 720×576 DVDs. Now since you use ConvertX you only get single pass encoding which is lower quality than two pass encoding. Also this movie’s bitrate has been reduced to 1452 kbps and thats very low since dvd5s are usually encoded in a little below or above 4000kbps. Now you could encode it to a higher bitrate but thats just like encoding a low resolution movie into a higher resolution; you get worse quality video. As for your crappy audio, try fixing or replacing the speaker so at least you can get some 2.0 surround sound.

yea maybe it beats it in number of movies per dvd but the quality of those movies is $hit compared to a full dvd5
i watch movies to enjoy them in the best quality possible not to watch a $hitty rip

You guys have to admit that Green Street Hooligans was much better than this movie, if for no other reason than it had the amazingly cute Elijah Wood in it. A remarkably accurate potrayal of real hooliganism and football gangsters in England.
And Elijah showed how extremely versatile he is as an actor by pulling off that role even though he has that wholesome, Frodo-type image about himself now.

I can’t get this onto disc on full screen VSO rippes it at 16:9 even if you put 4:3 and winavi 7 won’t even touch the file and v8 winavi stinks why can’t there be a desent ripper out there that was as easy as winavi 7.7 they all suck

@50 - How the hell can you compare the two (Green Street and Footsoldier). They’re 2 totally different films.
Green Street was solely about football hooliganism, whereas Footsoldier has about 15 miutes or so of it, the rest a totally different subject(s). Football Factory was much better than Green Street IMO. Having a hobbit (Elijah Wood) as a football hooligan is a joke. Danny Dyer fits to Football Factory superbly.
I remember all about the Rettenden murders from TV and newspapers, and this has always been an interest of mine. And, having seen photographs from the actual murder scene, they do mirror that shown in the film.
And the book - Essex Boys, is an excellent read.
British cinema at it’a BEST.

the only bad thing about this movie is the HUGE timing mark at the top….kinda like the one from the early screener of The Bourne Ultimatum.
Just giving a heads up on quality.
Other than the timing mark its awesome quality.
I used Virtual Dub to crop the timer. (video > filters > null transform ) It was the first time i have cropped a movie before and it worked fine. I messed the compression up a little and ended up with 2 1.5GB files but no big deal.
And anyone who thinks this is better than, or like Green Street is an idiot. Green Street is a load of crap. At least this film is based on a true story and is believable.
