RIAA’s weak attempts refused by universities
These guys from RIAA must be really living in the Wonderland. They have been on a high-profile campaign to get college students that the RIAA believes have been involved in illegal file trading to settle lawsuits against them at a “discount”. As part of this strategy, the company has tried to enlist universities to help them identify and turn over the names of offending students. But it’s heartening to see that some universities aren’t spinelessly acquiescing to the RIAA’s demands. The University of Wisconsin has told the RIAA that it has no obligation to rat its students out unless it’s compelled to do so by a subpoena. Meanwhile, the University of Nebraska has told the RIAA that it can’t help them identify many of the students accused of file trading. The school’s system changes a computer’s IP address each time its turned on, and it only keeps this information for month. After that month, the school has no way of associating an IP address with a computer or its user.
The RIAA is angry about this, and a spokesman for the group criticized the university for not understanding “the need to retain these records”. This is a ridiculous complaint. The university doesn’t have a need to retain these records, and there’s no reason it should do so out of some obligation to the RIAA. If there were any doubt that the university is really irritated by the RIAA’s requests, it has requested that the RIAA pay the university to reimburse its expenses from dealing with this (lol). If all of this back and forth sounds familiar, it’s because it very closely resembles what happened a few years ago when the RIAA tried getting ISPs to share data on their users. Fortunately, the ISPs stood up for their users and told the RIAA to get lost. It’s too bad the group didn’t seem to learn its lesson.

ROFLMAO… they try and try only to get burnt again and again
RIAA should just give up….it is a losing battle……
Kudos to all Universities not ratting their students out….
I wonder what the RIAA could do next…..
Well, it will probably use the politicians it has in its pocket to push new laws to force the universities to keep the ip records for at least 100 years.
ROFL
i want some of that toilet paper too
fuck the riaa so hard
the riaa will continue to do everything in their power to get their msg across. that they won’t stand for this continued proliferation of mp3s across the internet. it would be better if they understand that people don’t want to buy their music anymore because it’s so freaking expensive nowdays. so much overhead, not to mention all the overhead probably going into these musics due to their continued battles… leads to an album that sells for over $15 on regular msrp when you can get them off itunes for $10. or even better, most albums these days have jsut one or two good songs on them. if the riaa wants people to buy their music, make the albums hold some “quality” instead of breaking out a new album for an artist every six months.
I look at it like, the main reason these students are probably downloading is because its so freakin expensive to go to school in the US, heaven forbid they get something for free eh(yes I am a Canadian)…I mean they’re sounding like Dick Pound with his steroid epidemic he’s trying to solve in pro sports, they just go after everybody hoping to catch some…

Is it me? Or afron (post #5) has provided everyone with TOO MUCH information about himself? Please keep your sex toy fantasies to yourself afron!
Seriously though, RIAA is just fear mongering. Scare people into paying them (just like the modern day version of the mafia).
The thing is, if you know the limitations in what they can do, you can tell them to f**k off! (its said that 3/4 of university students ignore RIAA letters!)…You don’t have to do shit for them unless they provide a court order (subpoena). They aren’t the law (even though they will try to change the laws to suit THEIR ways).
At best, they’re nothing more than a greedy, spineless tyrant attempting to secure their future profits. (This is often typical of someone who has little clue about technology or their customers).
Just keep sharing folks. Call their bluff. As long as they can’t gather sufficient evidence against you, they can’t do shit to you.
i wish RIAA was a pussy and i could fuck it so bad
I’d rather fuck yours but I heard there’s a queue. I Just hope everyone that does wears two condoms because we don’t want anymore mistakes like you happening to the world.
