I should also have said that a telecine is not the same as a telesync (TS) which is more common in torrentland.

A TS release is basically a cam release but, whereas a cam release is usually poor quality video and audio, and usually filmed from one side of a cinema leading to odd cropping are slanted images, a TS is normally better quality. In a lot of cases a TS is filmed by a dodgy cinema employee with a decent camera mounted at the centre of the theatre or from the projection room itself. A standard cam release has the audio recorded with the camcorders own mic leading to the sounds of people coughing, laughing and even talking being recorded as well. A TS usually has the sound taken from the headphone jack for the hearing impaired so has better audio, although it's usually still mono.

I have a friend who works for a UK film distributer, I asked him what a DVD screener really is from his company's point of view. He told me on the premise that I did not name him or the company.

He told me that a DVD screener is produced usually by the film company, but also sometimes by the distributer in a certain market if the film company does not have their own distribution company in that market. They can be sent out sometimes before the cinema release to well known and respected reviewers for major magazines, newspapers or TV stations, to some cinema chains to allow them to schedule showings etc. They can also be sent to censorship bodies to use for censorship purposes in place of the film reels and also from the film company to the distribution company for them to view should they elect to distribute the movie. Most often they are sent out (by his company anyway) for these purposes, but they can also be sent out to major rental chains too. In other cases the screener can be sent out in advance of the DVD release for the same reasons or sent to those who decide which movies to put forward for major awards such as the oscars, bafta's etc. They are officially produced but in an attempt to cut piracy (his company and all others are aware they show up on torrent sites), companies usually add watermarks or black and white sections. In some cases the screeners even have an ID number which may appear on screen, this allows them to try and trace back to the source of the original release but this is rare he says because it means individually producing a screener for each person it is to be sent to. Usually the ID number is on the case which is pretty pointless, or if an ID number does appear it is usually the ID number of the plant or company that produced the screener. This allows them to try and find out if any leak came from the production plant/company. Screeners by his company are produced in small numbers using a different company from the one that handles large scale production. He did say his own company are looking at screeners being distributed electronically via the internet and heavily encrypted with some kind of proprietry drm or so that they can only be viewed via an encrypted section on their website (he wouldn't elaborate) and said that as far as he has been told, most other companies are looking at this as well for their screeners. He did point out that broadband connections in many parts of the world aren't yet fast enough so dvd screeners will have to be produced for some time yet. You can probably think of a DVD screener in the same way as old 12inch white label singles that were sent out in advance of release to radio stations and major reviewers.

And before anyone asks, no he wont pass on dvd screeners for ripping. He is well paid and values his job too much. However, he did admit he downloads movies and music himself and says most people he knows in the industry do it lol.

A telecine release is meant to be a copy from the film reels or digital master carried out by someone who works for a cinema chain or other dodgy people in the distribution chain. Why cinemas need DVD recording equipment like this is anyones guess (guy on the food stand wanting his copy?). Although a telecine is meant to be this it now has other meanings in torrentland.

As already explained by others a DVD R5 is a copy of a commercially produced dvd usually for the russian market. R5 markets are probably the worse for movie piracy so the time between cinema and dvd release is much shorter (usually a few weeks to a month) to try and cut down on piracy in these markets. In most cases a R5 DVDrip can have AC3 sound but this depends on whether the original had it or on the group or person doing the ripping. In some cases the R5 may have subtitles in their language either included in the rip or (much more rarely) hard coded onto the video.

A standard DVDrip is just a copy of the commercial DVD when it is released in western markets (US or Europe normally).

Hope that helps the newbies out there.

As for RE Extinction, I liked it. Better than the second but not as good as the first. Still not a patch on the games though :-)

@48
A couple of b/w scenes, and an annoying 'property of' at the bottom (similar to that of superbad's dvdscr).

Overall much better video quality as compared to ESPiSE's rip.
However, audio kinda sux...barely audible speech/dialogues. If you turn up the volume everything non-dialogue (explosions, etc.) becomes very loud!
