Release dates for Windows XP SP3
With Service Pack 3 for Windows XP just over the horizon, we’ve managed to get our hands on the internal schedule for the release of the highly anticipated update to the aging operating system. As you can see in the list below, most of the stages will occur before the end of the month, though forced automatic updates won’t land until June. This delay should give system administrators an ample amount of time to prepare for the upgrade or simply come up with an excuse when things go awry.
- April 14, 2008: Support is available for the release version of Service Pack 3 for Windows XP
- April 21, 2008: Original Equipment Manufacturers, Volume License, Connect, and MSDN and TechNet subscribers
- April 29, 2008: Microsoft Update, Windows Update, Download Center
- June 10, 2008: Automatic Updates
More details about Service Pack 3 for Windows XP available in PDF at Microsoft’s site.

Q: What are these new features I keep hearing about?
A: Windows XP Service Pack 3 will not include any major new features, but it will include four minor new features that improve the system’s reliability and security. Contrary to reports, Microsoft has been very up-front about these functional additions for quite some time now.
These new features include:
Network Access Protection compatibility. Announced years ago, this feature allows Windows XP machines to interact with the NAP feature in Windows Server 2008. This functionality is built into the RTM version of Windows Vista as well.
Product Key-less install option. As with Windows Vista, new XP with SP3 installs can proceed without entering a product key during Setup.
Kernel Mode Cryptographics Module. A new kernel module that “encapsulates several different cryptographic algorithms,” according to Microsoft.
“Black hole” router detection algorithm. XP gains the ability to ignore network routers that incorrectly drop certain kinds of network packets. This, too, is a feature of Windows Vista.
And that’s about it. Nothing dramatic, as promised.

Read the Microsoft description of S3..is there anything there of any value…don’t think so…..it’s all to make XP users feel better about they BS they tried to pull off with Vista

Q: That’s it? Is there anything else?
Nothing major. Some features have actually been removed, like the taskbar-based Address Bar option.

as you can see , i will stay with SP2… i dont want that WGA thing to be installed even if i have a legit windows… No PHONE HOME thing…
well next time you have to reinstall windows xp, it will save you a lot of time. thats good enough for me.
No Major Feature, i still using XP+SP2 Forever
/me waiting for Windows 7 to be release in 2009…

9 days till the new Ubuntu, Can’t wait!
Let’s face the truth:
XP and Vista both suck just like all the windows family…
Sure Vista looks somewhat pretty and has some good functions, but mostly it fails at usability. XP on the other hand is kinda unstable and it has bad BAD memory management.
Then there’s Linux… well that sucks, don’t even get me started on this one.
And OSX which, surprise surprise, sucks also. OSX used to be excellent at least for me, but after every new version it turned to big pile of s***…
So what the heck am I suppose to do? Either develop my own OS which would most surely suck big time, or use XP.
Since there simply are no alternative “modern” OS with all the necessary functions for my needs, I’m pretty much stuck with XP… and that my friends sucks some serious donkey-balls.
SP3 doesn’t require a serial until after install. I like this.
Does anyone know if the OEM, Volume License, and Retail serials can all be installed by the same disc? This is one of my top annoyances of XP. IT departments have to keep up with 3 XP Pro discs for Retail, VL, and OEM. Vista actually fixed this issue but of course created many others…
if these guys ever get their sht together this OS will solve a lot of peoples problems

@ 10 So am I dude, so am I
@16 thank you for not taking ANY side and flaming ALL the OSs
lol I got 1 machine with Vista and another machine dual booting XP and Vista, my dad has a macBook and I have Linux Live CDs that I use on a regular basis.
So basically I have the ultimate quadforce in crappy OSs?!?!? hehehe
macs….waste of money….linux….yeh right….so unuser friendly….at least all the flavors I have tried….Windows…buggy as hell….(all flavors)…but still the most user friendly….
I already have the sp3 installed on my pc it was auto updated about 2 months ago. As yet I have had no problems, have not noticed any difference with operating system. I did a custom install there was no WGA unless it was embedded in the SP3 it’self.
@21, yeah, but we’re all talking about XP, not 98.
@11 Stephen, obviously youi are far too young to remember when XP came out, it was THE worst OS that Nicrosnot had ever released to date. In comparison, Vista has far fewer security issues out of the box, has far fewer bugs and is much more hardware friendly than XP was at the same stage of development.
Nobody would switch from Win2K to XP when it was released, it wasn’t until after SP2 that it was even worth consideration as an OS, before that is was absolute crap.
So now that MS have finally worked on XP enough to have people use it with FEWER issues and fewer security holes than when nwq, you seem to feel that XP is and always was a great OS and Vista is crap.
Sorry kid, you’ll have to find some younger people than me to try and pass that crap off.
Iif you had a clue or even a relevant comment, I’d give you teh benefit of teh doubt, as you are clearly just mouthing off from a crack in your arse, you just sound like an uniformed and very young noob.
April 29th! GTA IV and SP3, woo magic!

Is out ~!
@ Brainless yankee
Still… FIVE (5) god damn YEARS and it’s all Microsoft can do ?
It is not a surprise that Vista is the most disappointing tech thing in 2007.
Man , i had high expectation for this OS like they told us when longhorn alpha was out. I was one of the first to try it. I still have the 2003 screenshot i took myself see here –> http://i25.tinypic.com/14o1w1s.jpg
When they scrapped longhorn and rebuilt from scratch thats when thing did get WORSE.
Is SP3 better than Halo 3?
I heard that some games won’t run on sp3..
@ Bill Gates

I love all the criticism of Windows yet would happily bet a lot of these people use it still. I love how cool it is to criticise something that’s the most popular choice yet ever thought it could be the most popular choice for a reason? If Windows truly was SO bad wouldn’t have more people switched to alternatives?? Considering how much Apple’s grown since the release of the Ipod too…
I’ve used Windows for all my life and have never been without a decent PC for OS reasons. These people who tend to criticise Microsoft the most are the people who try to ’speed’ it up, install billions of programs that ‘boost’ xp.
I’ve used XP for many years now and I have it working to almost personal perfection, if I managed that (and many others) then all I can assume is it’s down to taste and you’re open to switching to linux if you’re smart or mac.
I’m sticking to MS-DOS v6.22 for a few more years.
@33
After reading comments from all these morons you are first writing something so true. The biggest problem for Windows (well, hell, for any OS), is the idiots sitting in front of the computers, who call big blue “e” icon on the desktop “the internet” and who blame Microsoft for their XP working so slow after installing Norton Antivirus.
now back to the topic.
As of yesterday the SP3 is available for download? If so, where exactly can we download it? (the original source obviously, no none-ms sites)
@22 it is the xp.
@23
When XP came out it was regarded as the BEST OS Microsoft had released.
I am not trying to patronize you but DO YOU remember 98? That was slated as the worst OS they had released and it was truly dire to use. I mean, we had all seen the BSOD before it’s release but it really took things too a new level lol.
“The release of Windows 98 was preceded by a notable press demonstration at Comdex in April 1998. Microsoft CEO Bill Gates was highlighting the operating system’s ease of use and enhanced support for Plug and Play (PnP). However, when program manager Chris Capossela plugged a scanner in and attempted to install it, the operating system crashed, displaying a Blue Screen of Death.[4] Gates remarked after applause and cheering from the audience, “That must be why we’re not shipping Windows 98 yet.” Video footage of this event became a popular Internet phenomenon.”
Windows ME was not a whole lot better.
Don’t get me wrong, XP was riddled with security issues but it was far more stable and user friendly than any MS OS seen before.
Vista is another step forward and I am a very happy user of it.
ivan, yes, msdos still rules. so does 98 and xp. vista-hope those in the scene finally find a way to beat protection to stop us buying the useless piece of crap.
Anybody know if ill be able to install the final build of XP SP3 over previous builds? Or will it ask for uninstallation of previous builds before you can install. I have purposefully slipstreamed build 5508, and installed new on my cousins pc, but if I won’t be able to over previous builds then im gonna have to just install XP with sp2, then sp3 build 5508 by itself.
Fumbles,
“Windows ME was not a whole lot better.”?
Here, let me correct those awful spelling errors: “Windows ME was a whole lot worse.”
Vista is nothing more than WinME with steroids. Both are epic failures.
u missed off when is the scene gonna get it lol
@41: Why is Vista nothing more than ‘WinME with steroids. Both are epic failures”?
It’s not the real release date!
A Microsoft spokesperson declined the same say to confirm reports circulating on technology blogs today citing purportedly leaked documents as saying the online release date for Windows XP Service Pack 3 will be April 29.
