My computer is going on 3 years old… I defrag often, run anti-spyware/anti-virus/anti-all that crap…

Dont use this! Use my registry cleaner that includes all of these features that are licensed under the GNU GPL. The next version will include a optimizer, startup manager, and others… Download it here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/littlecleaner/
Deleting registry keys does not improve performance, unless you delete many thousands and thousands of them, from having an ultra-huge registry that consumed too much memory. But if you have that problem, the system is probably unusable for other reasons.
Do clean install of the operating system.
just click restore…
If you have only one HDD, make another partition.
Install all your programs, tune the OS etc….
Set that every program will save data on second disk or partition. (no data lost when reinstaling OS)
Install some backup program (I prefer ACRONIS) and make backup of your whole C: drive
And without any problems you can have clean OS every time you think you’ll need it

The thing to remember about reg cleaners is that NOT everything a reg cleaner claims is a problem really is a problem. Most of the things a reg cleaner will cite are actually needed on your system. And if you let it “clean” them, you will mess up your pc even more. You have to be very careful with using these programs. Always make a system restore first.
