Redsn0w 0.8 (iPhone 3GS Jailbreak)

Yesterday the iPhone Dev Team released their lastest iPhone and iPod Touch jailbreaking tool Redsn0w 0.8. Im sure most of you are wondering whats new, since the 0.7 version of redsn0w was released not to long ago… Whats new? This release is now able to jailbreak the new iPhone 3GS. I haven’t been able to confirm it but i’ve been hear the dev team also updated ultrasn0w, the iPhone OS 3.0 unlocking to work with the 3GS. While this isn’t the first jailbreak for the 3GS, it is said to be more stable and safer than the other method. Windows, Mac, and Linux versions are below.

Will this jailbreak iPod Touch also?

Or is this exclusively for iPhone?

and lastly…do I need to have some information on the procedure or this a basic straight forward "for dummies" application?

Yes, this will jailbreak iPod Touch (1st & 2nd gen). Its pretty much straight forward.

Restore to iPod Touch 3.0 firmware in iTunes and then start redsn0w and use the same 3.0 firmware you used in iTunes to begin the jailbreak process.

    @ Akuma

I'd say for you to google up some tuts. Most tuts are available on iClarified.
Redsn0w always was for iPhone and iPod. So this has to work with iPod aswell. Then again i'm assuming, google for people who've done it and/or tuts.

ok, could somebody PLEASE explain, whats the benefit of jailbreaking?!
(Besides the fact that you can use different carriers)

jailbreak only allows to use non official apps, not to use different carriers (that's unlocking). Once you did the jailbreak you can install Installous which allows you to download and install almost any commercial app for free from your iPhone.

GeoHot developed the jailbreak for the 3GS and handed over to the dev team, If anyone actually cares. He released the Jailbreak a week before the Dev team at PurpleRa1n dot com. Wish people would give credit to he actual guy who did it. He is also the first person to ever unock the first iphone, yet the dev team receives all the praise

    Good Job GeoHot!

    To anyone older than 16:

Jailbreaking your iphone isn't good for security, so unless either there's nothing you can't afford to have stolen on your phone, or you really REALLY need to run something that's not Apple-approved, sadly you're best off not jailbreaking.

I'd love to see the day Apple realise that opening up their systems makes their products better, and makes an official (non-security-compromising) jailbreak tool, but I won't hold my breath.

    July 9th, 2009 | 18:14

@ 22 its not good for security if you dont know what your doing, other than that jailbreaking your phone is no different than having a locked phone… Just do a little research before you jailbreak. Cydia CAN be a security issue only use it to get what you NEED then close it and make sure its not running, and your sources are reliable… i dont see why someone would not jailbreak their phone…

@25 Unauthorised apps run on a jailbroken iphone run outside the sandbox, and can be installed with root privileges, so I'd reiterate my point that unless you NEED to run one of the unauthorised apps, and know what you're doing, it's best not to just jailbreak an iphone just for the fun of it – you could easily brick your phone, or install dodgy software that could do anything with your data and potentially even make calls to premium numbers. It isn't really kicking off yet, but with so many people just jailbreaking because they can, it's only a matter of time before people start taking advantage of that.

So let me get this straight – i know nothing so yes this is dumb.

Jailbreak will not unlock the phone so i can use any operator i want. I will only open the phone so i can run unApproved applications on it.

To unlock my phone so i can use any operator i must not jailbreak it first? I can unlock it without jailbreaking it?
