“Redacted” is yet another Iraq war movie that sparked mixed opinions. Apparently, there were some people who found it terrible, commenting about the bad acting and plot. There were others who hailed this a cinematic gem. At the Venice Film Festival, Brian De Palma reportedly received a 10-minute standing ovation by viewers (video link).
Synopsis: Inspired by real events and the ever-emerging realities of an on-going war, REDACTED explores the consequences of placing a group of young American soldiers into a morally ambiguous universe. Pushed to their very limits, the film portrays the tragic events surrounding a US army squad that targets and persecutes an innocent Iraqi girl and her family, culminating in a brutal rape and murder. The film addresses the innocent casualties of war and reveals the general helplessness surrounding the war in Iraq. A fictional version of the truth, REDACTED forces the viewer to question the filters through which we see and accept events in our world. Ultimately, REDACTED begs the question: Once we know the truth, what is the value of war and the worth of all its tragedies?

waiting for the RS links. How could a Brian De Palma film be bad? This is the man that’s given us Sisters, Carrie, The Untouchables and Casualties of War to name a few. He doesn’t make bad movies (for me anyway). I’m looking forward to watching it.

Great movie, how is the plot bad when it’s based on a real event? The acting is very good too, it’s like ordinary people would act in front of cameras, and the whole movie is done in the style of ordinary grunts in front of cameras! I mean look at any home movies you try to make and see how wooden people come across when they know they are being filmed! Only people that disliked this film are neocon and gun-ho patriot loonies!
Its probably based on the Haditha massacre. Hell, it could be based on any average day in Iraq.
This is a great movie. You can’t just look at how there’s not much action, and how the story is about an army team raping a girl and kiling her family. You look at everything going on. It’s the story of a guy trying to get into film school, and films what happens while he’s in Afghanistan. I found this more powerful than Stop-Loss, and most other military movies that tries to show some way of how there’s corruption. I’m not hateful against the US, because I know a lot of soldiers hate this movie because it makes the army look bad, but it’s a great movie. Thumbs up!

It’s definitely a boring movie. If it wasn’t so boring, maybe I’d watch it all and comment on it.
But whether it is for American nationalists or European crybabies I don’t think I’ll appriciate this movie’s point.

Redacted treads on very serious turf. It comes pretty short on part of depicting real-life security procedures and checkpoints, my bet is it’s for scenario purposes, to put some tying knots in it. The rest from that moment on, it is pretty blood scary. It involves some serious acting to pull this one off, as it pretends not to be directed material. I consider it as almost getting this done. The other weak point is in the end, showing real-life images from Iraq, not Afghanistan victims and mixing them with “flashes” from the movie fictionalized ones, all along pretending to show just real photos. My bet is the construction like this is to make a very powerful impact with the music and the victims in the movie in general. as a work of fiction, it is very good, as a real depiction of real-life people, better see “Gunner Palace”.

My only issue is how are you going to create scene after scene of a movie like this when nobody but the soldiers and the Iraqi family were wittinesses?
The movie masquerades as the absolute truth, yet you can never achieve that given the circumstances. Not to mention, if your going to rely on Arabs for fact based accounts of anything having to do with the possible, or perceived, persecution of fellow Arabs, you will just end up with a slanted view of events driven by emotion.
Its also just a flat out, bad movie.
“A fictional version of the truth”… surely that’s an oxymoron? (Or is it just a fancy way of saying ‘untruth’?)

Thanks, will check out that one you mentioned. The end pictures might be mixed up, but I know how effective it was on me to show all the babies and toddlers torn to pieces. As a father of a one year old, it really tore at me. Cheers.

What it means is that the movie is a fictionalised account of a real event. It’s just like any historical movie you can see. I mean I bet Roman epics and Medieval ones depicting historical events aren’t exactly word for word dialogue accurate now, even modern era from WW2 on in movie form is fictionalised in most parts to fill in the gaps.
Think ‘Cloverfield’ but without a monster, cgi effects a few cute girls. This is nothing like De Palma’s Untouchables or Casualties of War, more like “everbody gets to hold the handheld for ten minutes”.
Bad acting and my current pet peeve, dark shaky camera work.
Watch it if you want, but if you’re like me, you’d rather have your gum scraped than watch it again.

You deserve the ten minute standing ovation.
The acting is horrible. The story is weak as water I don’t care what the hell it depicts. And someone needs to stop the whole “first-person, slinging snot, over emotional” camera work. It’s tired and played out. I would rather have my bandwidth for something else informative like Gushers 3 or the new My Friends Hot Mom.

I really wanted to like this movie. High School level acting. What a disappointment.

Really a dreadful film. I’m absolutely astonished this rubbish won any sort of award. Terrible screenplay, direction, writing, etc.. My views have nothing to do with my position on the war. If you want a really good anti-war film watch, “In the Valley of Elah.” That is a powerful piece of film making, not this trash.
Well rlslog just dropped about 20 respect points in my book, and not because they posted this. It’s because now I know there are also pond scum who frequent this site and *enjoy* movies like these that are clearly sensationalized, fictional accounts of the war in Iraq.
“Truth Man” has to be some idiot in a shack somewhere not industrialized, because I’ve never seen such ignorance. Most Western nations have all volunteer armies, and they must do their duty regardless of their personal beliefs. All of the soldiers that I’ve spoken to, or read their work, including Canadians, the Brits etc… feel invested in Iraq and feel as if this is their chance to make a difference in the world.
While it was true that 1 girl did get raped, you’re talking about a group of 150,000+ men. Statistically speaking, 1 rape amongst all that is phenomenal. And are all the US haters forgetting how many people were raped, tortured etc… under Saddam? Come on now. Please stop being so ignorant. Turn off your TV, and go read the works of some of the unpaid journalists out there. They’re more than willing to provide you with an unbiased glimpse.
As for the movie, it’s complete crap. It was rightfully panned by critics and anyone even slightly aware of the truth. Hollywood & Co. should probably realize that the American people, although they may not support the war wholeheartedly, do not like to see their very own military slandered by fellow Americans. Stop Loss? Redcated? complete flops. Just stop. Nobody wants to see this type of movie. At least not yet.
