@Zardoz2003 - i agree with you that magesy is the place to go if youre serious about music creation (didnt mention it myself cause thort i might get a telling off from someone), but i think its nice that rlslog is making the odd music app post, cause maybe itll get more people having a go.

as for ableton, it is a seriously useful app, but youre comparing a screwdriver with a spanner - they both turn things, but very differently. for starters, ableton live is (as the name suggests) intended for people who want to create and/or perform music live 'on the fly'. reaper is more your traditional DAW, comparable with pro tools, cubase, digital performer, logic, etc.

its designed primarily for recording audio and sequencing midi, so it lacks many of ableton's dj-style live effects and time stretching/pitch shifting. it can do those things, but not in the same way.

advice for people interested in trying out music creation:

if youre recording a band or sequencing/producing a track, a traditional DAW like reaper or one of the more big budget alternatives is the way to go.

if you want to build beats live and/or remix tracks, then you'll have the most fun using ableton live, fruity loops studio or reason (which, in my opinion, is at its best rewired through a 'proper' DAW, especially using mixers to submix enormous multis of 7 or 8 synths :) but i digress...)

the point of apps like this is they let you work quickly and intuitively - they allow you to play around with building a track almost instantly, so you can essentially remix your elements live. and there arent any offline effects so you dont have to stop playback and lose the feel of the track. but theyre really not at all suited to recording a band or other ensemble.

oh and if you just want to make drag and drop generic and painfully soulless music, check out ejay and their ilk. but dont fool yourself, you arent really making music, youre filling out an audio colouring book.

and finally, audiomulch is a really underrated piece of software. it doesnt really fit the mold for audio apps, but does its own thing. and it doesnt really force you to work in a specific way. it looks incredibly ugly (been developed for a long time as shareware, now at 1.0 and available for 90day trial... i think there are some cracks available if you shop around, but again, support the independent developers!! its only $89 and if cant afford that, email the developer and he'll actually negotiate with you - seriously, theyre great guys...), but everyone i know who uses it does completely different (and very cool) things with it. and its also quite handy as a live app... not in the same way as ableton, at all, but still useful for some things. check it out, everybody.

oh yeah and it really sucks that the new live isnt working yet. cant find a decent copy of cubase anymore either - thats why ive switched to logic, which is genuinely great, but just not the same as friendly old cubase.

sorry to ramble, Zardoz, im sure im teaching my gran to suck eggs - the advice above is not intended for you, but rather for the readers (and writers) of rlslog, in the hope that it might help avoid future comparisons/fan fights between, for instance, pro-tools and reason.

The only DAW in this category to use is Ableton Live .. it took the AiR release group three tries but I think they have it down on Live 7.0.3 that just came out..and yes it will cost you around $500 with the box but it is like a Rolls Royce compared to this Pinto program here ..any serious techno musician will tell you that..Reason 4 rocks too..and so does the new Fruity Loops XXL 8!! These guys should leave posting DAW apps to magesy.com, lol

reaper is actually pretty darn good. its vst/vsti/dx/dxi support is a major bonus, its small, more flexible for routing than cubase and has almost all the features of the big name sequencers (time/pitch shifting, tempo/time signature changes, automation, multi-take loop recording etc.)

it doesnt look that pretty, but its relatively easy and quick to use, once youve got to grips with the interface.

oh and it can be run from an external drive (usb stick or whatever) so you can take it round to a friend's house to get their input on a remix or something. mind you, you might need something bigger than a usb stick if youre recording at a half-decent bit-/sample- rate

thing is, its designed to be a cheaper alternative to the big names: a not-for-profit license is only $50, and they leave it up to the user's conscience to pay the full $225 if (when?) you have a hit single. so its a bit mean to use the keygen really - in fact, you can even download the full version for 'evaluation purposes' from www.reaper.fm

so really, it'd probably be a bit more useful if you guys at rlslog could post about releases of less readily-available sequencers/music apps, like cubase or something.

oh and normally you wouldnt use reaper in conjunction with cubase. i have used both in the past, but never together - they both do the same job.

anyways, nice to see a music app post, regardless of my grumbles. oh and sorry to come off like an advert for reaper: in the interests of an honest balance, i should add that ive switched to apple's logic pro, which is pretty awesome too :)

Good program for a beginner. Not ideal for someone with experience because the one huge difference between this and a pro level program is the inability to use DTS. But a solid app nonetheless.
