Razorbook 400: another 7″ cheap notebook
A small Florida-based PC builder is jumping on the cheap notebook train with a UMPC-sized device that is offered in only one version and priced at $299 – which makes it, at least as far as we know, the cheapest notebook currently offered in the U.S. The company’s new Razor 400 may not be the most striking notebook you will ever see, but it could be an interesting option for basic computing and Internet needs on the go. Its $299 price tag undercuts not just any notebook we know of, but also UMPCs and upcoming MIDs.
Not surprisingly, $299 does not buy very much in terms of computing horsepower – the device is based on a 7” 800 x 480 pixel display, 512 MB DDR2 memory, 4 GB flash story, Wi-Fi and Ethernet connectivity and runs on a Linux operating system. Ground shipping is included in the $299 price and the only option offered is a $70 carrying case. The processor is an interesting story by itself: The chip is described as a 400 MHz version of the Jz4740 CPU by Ingenic, a Chinese chip manufacturer. We have no idea how fast this processor is, but know that it really was not designed to power notebooks. Instead, Ingenic says that it is a chip to run in GPS, PMP and smartphone devices.

WOW- 160 dollars worth of digital picture frame + keyboard (that’s what these devices are in reality) for the bargain price of $300. I guess that means this crooked company thinks that pre-installing Linux is worth $140.
The only UMPC/MIDs worth anywhere near $300 are those designed for the purpose with a better display resolution/processor, and they are coming from DELL etc. In the mean time, a world full of rip-off merchants will be praying that supplies of these “digital picture frame” based UMPCs are available from the far-eastern factories before the average consumer wises up to their real value.
It’s not the cheapest, Acer have a $199 laptop you can order now and it’s far more powerful.

On-topic though the razorbook is necessary as it will keep asus in check, without competition there’s no need to improve.
I prefer to MSI Wind, since it has REAL 80GB harddrive, 10″ LCD (small, but not too small) with good resolution, that displays webpages correctly, like with “real PC”. And best of all, it has Win XP, the best OS there is IMO. =D

IF it gets released, the MSI wind seems to be the one to get, the only drawbacks are that right now you can only upgrade the Linux version to 1.5G since the 1st chip is buried deep in the system and they only offer 512 for it.
The Windows version does come with a base 1G but is around $75 more
I LIKE an 80G storage, I HATE it being a HD since it will be a daily commuter reader for me (though my ZenM has has held up to a couple of drops -HAd went missing,,Ipod or Zune HD??)

lmao! I’ve had my Jornada 720 for a good 6 years and it’s still better in functionality than all other small form factor laptops and HPCs made today! haha! Go waste your money on something that’s either too overpowered to be taken advantage of (Asus EEPC) or just a useless piece of crap (like this Razorbook)
what a piece of crap, and they want 70 dollars for a case?! who do they think they are? apple? all the other small laptops like eee pc come at least with features like a webcam or a windows version, so you can at least use most software out there in a way. having linux on it is something people can do on their own, its not like linux costs any money, so no real feature here. without a doubt, a company that tries to cash in on the current trend. i hope people will be smart enough to avoid this.

It’s a very brave move by a company who really are against the odds in suceeding, what they were thinking is beyond me but I really hope they make it. Many of you may be happy to carry on buying from the same manufacturer as it slowly pushes everyone else out of business but I feel a bit of competition especially in the way of a lively new upstart is welcome.
I remember when 3dfx ruled the graphics card market. Everyone wanted a freakin’ voodoo, I was all primed to buy a voodoo 2 when out of nowhere nVidia appeared with the riva tnt and blew 3dfx away.
I am not saying this laptop will do that, just that we need to support the little guys because more often then not, they are actually interested in delivering a quality product rather than just cashing in, like Asus.
Maybe they will pull something special out of the bag?!?!

No, this company is not interested in delivering a quality product because they are probably just taking parts from multiple discontinued products and re-assembling them to make a quick profit – either that or they must be thinking we’re still in the year 2000. It says in the article itself that the processor they’re using is not meant for notebooks – that is, unless they’re spiral notebooks
