I currently have the 2005 version of this great program, is there enough change in its ways to warrent an upgrade as I dont have vista or 64bit windows and it works just fine.

I guess my question is, are the improvements worth it?

Those asking if it’s better than OO Defrag. Look carefully at the Screenshot. It looks like a COMPLETE knock-off of OO.

I use OO and won’t let go of it but I will download and may give it to friends… Maybe not.

Umm don’t you read the fine print in the box you print in? Don’t say stuff like “First” …Write something like a thumbs up or down about the program, I’m interested…

It looks to be pretty sweet, I’ve been wanting to see a good defreagger program, but do you think that the normal Vista defragger would do the same if not better job? I’m not sure, just wondering.

  40. ZV
    January 31st, 2008 | 03:20

You guys might want to test it against Diskeeper first, I did a down and dirty test and Diskeeper really defragged better, and it was MUCH faster than Perfectdisk. After running a full defrag with Perfectdisk, the drive map was still fragmented and Diskeeper said the drive was still not defragged. I then defragged it with Diskeeper, which really cleaned up the drive map. I then analyzed it with Perfectdisk and it confirmed that Diskeeper actually did a better job of defragging. I’m gonna wait a day or two and try it again.

    January 31st, 2008 | 03:26

Dunno about Vista, but XP’s defrag program is actually a cut down version of Disk-keeper.

    I’m a give this a try.

  42. Zexy
    January 31st, 2008 | 03:30

Thx for the info ZV, will keep that in mind.
In the past I’ve always had better and faster defrags
with either Raxxo or O&O. Guess i’ll also do some new
    runs.

Cannot un-rar or un-zip this, keeps asking for a disk?? any help guys?

  44. k
    January 31st, 2008 | 04:01

A few years ago some very technical discussion on a forum made it clear to a group of very technical people that PerfectDisks methods were better than DiskKeeper, let alone O&O.

Unfortunately, my brain only remembers that fact, not the context behind it. So, I recommend those concerned consider a thorough investigation of their own as opposed to making conclusions based on posts here.

I was using perfectdisk last week, then I decided to switch to the newest edition of diskeeper pro cause it had some cool features like anti-frag etc. When I defrag though, the harddrives dont get completely defragmented like perfectdisk does. Diskeeper is faster at defragging but perfectdisk defrags better but takes alot longer with the agreesive mode switch on which is suppose to be better.

Excellent program, the best in the commercial apps,if you want something free try the superb JkDefrag, comes with a defrag screensaver at 300kb which rocks.

    January 31st, 2008 | 05:04

Ya it does look like the O&O UI
Well I like O&O because I think it does a better job of defragging. I switched from diskeeper to perfectdisk to O&O and have never gone back.

  48. Atlas
    January 31st, 2008 | 05:12

what is this space optimizing defragmentation you speak of? Why not use a file system that does not fragment to begin with? Such as ext2/ext/ReiserFS, instead of FAT or NTFS? Rhetorical question. You use windows.

Just to let you guys using MacBook with Boot Camp (dual boot windows and os x) this had destroyed my $mft and i had to reformat BOTH partitions and reinstall - so beware, i even sent an email to their support about it and they say there is nothing they can do about it !
Here is the link to their Knowledge Base http://www.raxco.com/support/kb_detail.cfm?kbid=615&prod=1&ver=8.0

    Beware !

It makes me sick the way the makers of defrag software try to play on people’s fears; “If you don’t buy our product and defrag your system, programs will start to freeze up on you, games will crash and eventually you won’t be able to use your computer at all!!!”

While it’s true that fragmentation slows down file access times, that’s all it does. In reality, except for the placement of the blocks that make up the file, fragmented files are no different than unfragmented files. The OS doesn’t see any difference between the two. It looks up where the parts of the file are on the drive, then goes there and gets those parts. It’s not as if there are two completely different procedures that are used based on whether a file is or isn’t fragmented.

In any case, does anyone else find it odd that these programs all support defragging FAT16 and FAT32 drives, but they no longer work on the versions of Windows that used those file systems? Windows 98 has been declared obsolete and support for it dropped, shouldn’t they do the same with older file systems?

I get a blue screen saying my computer need to shutdown because it encounter some error while I am installing this software… anybody had this error? BTW I am using windows XP Pro. NTFS formattted harddisk..

  55. k
    January 31st, 2008 | 12:33

@48: Fragmentation in Linux is minimized, not absolutely done away with.

@53: Restricted OS support is usually the result of the developer deciding to use more recent and/or superior APIs. This is particularly true of any app requiring NT 5+ (Windows 2000 or above).

Won’t you post Diskeeper too? :D

Personally I use O&O, went from O&O to PerfectDisk back to O&O again, maybe this version is better. Both are loads better than PerfectDisk, which doesn’t even bother to consolidate free space, defrag every last file, or even attempt to guess at optimal placement.

Everytime I start the analyze process in Vista of the Vista partition, using PD 2008 Pro, it BSOD with error 00000000×8E

    Anyone got a fix?

  59. Richie

I get a BSOD error also after it has finished analyzing.

    April 18th, 2008 | 13:15

On vista this works for a while & then just stops defraging midstream. Uninstall and reinstall and awy it goes again. But when you go to use it again it just stops once more. O&O might not have as much “fill” bit at least it is more reliable and doesn’t 5hit itself halfway through a defrag session.

    May 3rd, 2008 | 09:27

I also get the BSOD error. i just purchased this and everytime I try to analize my harddrive it works fine till it gets to 99% then BSOD. i tried uninstalling/reinstalling and updating my drivers but nothing. Im running Windoews XP Pro.
