RapidShare Rumors Not True (Online Again)

Many of you have commented about it and Shiny made a brief post on the fact that RapidShare IS UP AND RUNNING AGAIN. I thought I’d still post an article about why it was down, for those of you who are interested in the battle between Pirates and the law.

Edit: Ive corrected the post now, the previous news was simply speculation. The following is the statement of a RapidShare employee about the whole situation.

As of 19 January 2008 16:00 GMT, Rapidshare’s servers appear to be offline. There are rumors that Rapidshare has been shut down by the authorities after a court order, however, court records do not reveal any issued Rapidshare court order as of yet. Rapidshare technician Steven Gircham has commented on this issue -

“There are rumors concerning attacks made on the Rapidshare.com servers. There are also rumors that Rapidshare has been shut down by a court order. These rumors are false. We would like to apologize to our users and inform them that no data has been lost. There have been some hardware issues as a result of high bandwidth and server overload. We are doing our very best to resolve the hardware issues, and users should expect uptime by midnight tonight (GMT)”

This post contradicts the previous one. According to Rapidshare’s news page, it was a technical problem, not a legal one.

you can still view the site via IP - 80.239.151.250 - But it could be just a shell.

They either got DOS attacked, and are having trouble getting there DNS working or they want it to at least appear that way.

rapidshare.com (DNS and web) is hosted on a net block of 195.122.131.0 - 195.121.131.255 (also referred to as 195.122.131/24 CIDR in network terms) which is part of a larger block 195.122.128.0 - 195.122.191.255 owned by Level3 UK service provider.

Level3 appears to be blocking inbound traffic destined for 195.122.131.0/24 at the edge of their network and they are dropping all rapidshare.com traffic such as DNS, web, etc. This is the point where they peer with other service providers.

    This is highly unusual.

This is a drastic measure and one can only surmise two reasons that make any sense. 1) denial-of-service or 2) legal action.

If the inaccessibility issue has been intermittent, (and there have been spotty reports) that’s a hint at denial-of-service attack. However, if it’s immediate and sustained then it’s most likely legal.

At the moment, it would appear to be DOS and that they where NOT taken down by any “anti-piracy orginizations”

rapidshare isnt selling you warez its selling you the ability to host your files of any kind with the added perk of letting you share your files with other members. It just so happens alot of people host warez files.

    January 20th, 2008 | 03:59

Torrents would be great if so many isps wern’t traffic shaping, port throttling and placing bandwidth caps. if it was just a speed issue I could deal with that. Its the double to tripple bandwidth usage that are starting to turn people off.

  55. blunden
    January 20th, 2008 | 04:02

@xaardante (49): RS-links are as far as getting something early that you could possibly get in my opinion. Even public torrents would be faster than that.

I however agree that rapidshare is nice for hosting a file now and then, but not for downloading releases.

    “20. January 2008 - Problems accessing RapidShare

Unfortunately, starting at 5 pm CET, one of our carriers experienced a severe technical problem with their hardware, causing a loss of 50 gigabit of bandwidth. Therefore RapidShare was unavailable for several hours. We already have taken steps to avoid this particular problem in the future.”

rapidshare vs torrent? come on now…

I can download 20 films with rapidshare in the same time as downloading 1 torrent film…

Plus, i dont have to worry about using things like peergaurdian to hide my ip, and worry througout the download that i’m gonna get sued for thousands of dollars…

Rapidshare is perfection, except for the 100mb limit. it does get a bit tedious joining files together, but it’s all worth it.

I’ve been using rapidshare for just under a year, and my 500gb external hard drive is full.

I’ve always hated the process of torrent files, and never understood why when i come on rlslog, people still request torrents. you people re living in the past.

  74. B0B
    January 20th, 2008 | 19:00

And don’t say that people are idiots because warez are free… it is like 4 euros per month or something ridiculous like that, even a five year old could afford it with their sweet money.

  75. đenson
    January 20th, 2008 | 22:21

rapidshare should pay some % (from premium cash income) of its traffic to companies (music, tv, movie, game …). otherwise it is getting richer on account of piracy.

  76. smegal
    February 11th, 2008 | 21:16

At uni i cant use torrents directly so i have a RS account which i can get stupid speeds on. But for my UK tv shows i use torrents on a web based torrent account from leasetorrent that sorts me out with torrents and everything else. But in my oppinion RS is better than torrents

  77. toooorent

I agree Rapidshare is a joke.
And you can have speeds like RS if you join a private Torrent society. I am a member of two of them, and can easily download 2 or 3 full HDHDVD rips in a few hours.

I’m a convert to RS from Torrents. I got caught using UTorrent and yes I did use PeerGuardian2 and blah, blah, blah. I covered myself as best as possible. I still got caught …3 times dl’ing from TRUSTED uploaders each and every time. The problem was, the popular uploaders are also popular for organizations that are paid to track/catch people in the act of pirating. My isp did nothing BUT .. I don’t know what would have happened if I’d been caught AGAIN by the movie detectives :) and my isp had to send out yet another letter to me. I didn’t want to find out. So, I switched to RS and haven’t gotten caught at all because of the way RS works. The packets are rar’d so … must actually be opened to view. Why would the movie detectives take the time to open any rar’d packets when they have tons of people using Torrents that are dead easy to ‘view’ and ‘catch’?? Yeah, that’s what I figured out too. They leave us alone and go after the torrent people. I discovered too that I get movies, etc. MUCH faster and all I have to do is unrar the files to have a whole DVD downloaded. There is NO downside to RS and I’ve used both. I used to be a torrent freak for about 2 years. Now, there is no comparison … RS is the only way I’ll go now. The monthly payment is nothing compared to being scared into NOT downloading even one single torrent. If you haven’t been caught downloading a torrent yet … it’s just a matter of time (provided you live in a country that cares. I supposedly live in one that doesn’t but yeah … I got those letters anyway) Now, I download whatever I want after being afraid to almost even turn the computer on. hahaha Just my opinion. If a torrent you download is one that’s being monitored even for a little while, once you connect, BAM … they got your info! Not worth it to me. RS is my thing. :)
