Rapidshare policy update: 80 GB download limit

I received few emails from our readers that Rapidshare changed their Users policy and it’s quite a significant change so I will write few sentences about it. Rapidshare continues to be one of the most popular filesharing services offering terabytes of data. You can find pretty much everything uploaded there, often just a few minutes after the pre time.

Anyway, the new policy affects mostly holders of Rapidshare Premium account: the main change is the download traffic limit to 80 GB per month, which is something as 2.66 gigabytes per day. Before the update, it used to be 10 gigabytes per day, so this is a pretty major limitation. Still, 80 gigabytes should be more than enough for you, unless you download all new video games and HD rips.

This change is valid only for new Premium accounts on Rapidshare, the holders of old accounts shouldn’t be affected unless they extend their account(s) after the policy change. The other important and actually very annoying change is that public, anonymous uploads will last only 10 downloads and then the data will be deleted. If you want to keep your files longer, you have to register a Collector’s account, which is free, but it’s still an extra hassle. Well, although these bad news may prevent few people from paying for Premium account at Rapidshare, I’m pretty sure the service will remain very popular nevertheless.

Well from what i read you can always pay a little extra to add additional download quota to your accout via TrafficShare
    https://ssl.rapidshare.com/cgi-bin/premiumzone.cgi?bodhelp=Hilfe+%2F+Infos (9.99 for additional 100Gb)
    Or am i misunderstanding it???

For me the issue isn’t the limit size or even the daily download limit. Its the fact its the same price. But for me this was just the last of many issues I have had with my account.

For rapidshare to do this they have broken our contracts, we can all get a refund on our accounts……see how fast this changes, they have fooked up and they will be realising this now

Meh. Web-based file sharing is lamer than using torrents, and that’s saying a LOT. Man up, get an FTP account somewhere, or just pay for usenet if you care at all about illegal downloads. Complaining about web-based sources for illegal files is like complaining that Kmart-brand sneakers hurt your feet when you try to run a marathon in them. You’re doing it wrong!

I noticed RS is slow during peak times like Sunday nights (its not my end).

Getting the same speeds on torrentleech as i would on rapidsh1t (6-7mbps), but without paying a cent. Move to private trackers, where ratio matters and there are always more seeds than leechers.

    November 9th, 2008 | 04:09

    @109:

Why are people doing it wrong by using RS or any other web-based source as you call it? I, for one, can get full bandwidth speed downloads all the time and it’s pretty useful that you can download from ANY computer with just your login info.

So now you Rapidshare loving arseholes realize Rapidshare sucks. I live in America and have been using torrents for 8 years and I’m not afraid of being caught. I got a copyright infringement notice once in December of 2005 for downloading Meet The Fockers with Limewire. Never used Limewire to download a torrent since and haven’t had any problems.

Personally, I am glad they did this, and I hope less people use the service.

I can’t stand rapidshare or going there to get a specific download. Even if its a sub 100mb d/l I would perfer getting it by torrent.

I think I’ll try Megaupload next.
Seems to have the most links available next to Rapidshare.
Plus, 1TB storage and an unlimited download limit.

Maybe I should get in on a 1 year plan before they change policies like RS did.

Im sure the vast majority of people could alter their downloading habbits if they wanted, to accomadate the 80GB monthly limit. However the 2.66GB daily limit is absoultely disgusting and I dont know how they expect to get away with it.

I use to use torrents but found they are pathetic for files that are somewhat old.

Bad thing. I just extended my old account. I have a limit of 2,66 GB per day. Your unused Traffic per day will be NOT accounted on your traffic volume. You will loose any not used traffic. Damn! So, if you dont use 2,66 GB on monday…it will be lost.

Not good. My account is extended until dezember and after then….I will not extend it.

  25. ScytheNoire

  26. jbondsr
    November 9th, 2008 | 09:51

I don’t think they are limiting it to 2.66GB per day.
It’s a limit of 80GB per month, which translates into 2.66 per day for 30 days.
So I believe you can still use more than 2.66GB per day. (Although I’m not sure if they still have that 10GB limit per day rule in effect along with this new 80GB per month rule.)

MU is fine, as long as your provider has a good connection to their servers. Both my home and work connections however are terrible with MU. At work, I get about 6 MB/s from RS (using multiple threads), with MU I cannot get above 500 kb/s (even when using 20 threads or more). So it takes me about 15 minutes to download a DVD-sized file from RS, and 4 hours with MU.

I have a premium RS account, valid until January 2009.

Of course – I WILL NOT EXTEND IT if RS is going to cripple their service constantly.

I have only two words to say:

    MEGAUPLOAD.COM (I am premium user since 2007)
    NETLOAD.IN (I am premium user since 2007)

I ban RAPIDSHARE.COM for being dishonest about their services.

  38. newjughead
    November 9th, 2008 | 13:10

Okay people, we need to encourage UPLOADERS to upload to megaupload, so that way megaupload gets all the lastest blah blah blah. Torrents are too slow, and rapidshare is too expensive, if we start uploading to an equally good service, *and cheap* like megaupload, we all can get fresh stuff from there. Rapidshare staff don’t upload the files you download, WE DO.

  39. Jeffsky

What’s the best usenet server around? Is giganews still on top? I’ve been using RS for quite sometime now and judging by the way things are going, might go back to newsgroups again.. They’re a little pricier than RS Premium but still offers topnotch service.. What newsgroup provider do you guys use? Might help me choose better.. THanks!

I’m using Power Usenet myself, I was with Giganews but Power Usenet had a better offer. I have no complaints about either service honestly.

  44. jbondsr
    November 9th, 2008 | 16:44

Premium Account members can download more data than users of the free service. Currently, a Premium Account allows the download of 2.66 Gigabyte (2.660.000.000 Byte) per day.

  45. Smithy
    November 9th, 2008 | 16:57

    @145

Up until around Oct 23, Premium users would get 10gb/day and be able to carry it over for five days for 50gb. This basically meant a premium user could DL up to 310gb/mth.

Now for the same price, you only get 2.7gb a day and they only let you DL up to 80gb/mth, a reduction of 75% for the same cost.

BTW, I just realized that in Feb, you probably will lose about 5gb of DL since it’s a short month and they only give you 2.7gb/day.

  46. Dan

Let’s just come to an agreement of where to upload all the content to in the future. If everybody uploads/uses MegaUpload they will soon become the next RS. But how are they now? Do they have as much of the new stuff as RS at the moment? Is there a site like warez-bb who provides MU-links? If so, i will switch to them instantly.

One blow for crapidshare, so people hopefully will be using it less. Good! :)

  50. mike
    November 9th, 2008 | 23:24

    - I don’t have RS account so I can’t comment on it – but some my friends switched from RS to MU and they all loved it.

    - I get DL speed around 800-850 KBit/s using 5Mbit/s ADSL internet connection.

    - For those people asking about if MU has a link checker – yes, using Mega Manager you can check and download links or links within a folder (need only one link). BTW, you can also use FlashGet (or other DL manager program) if you don’t like using Mega Manager.

    Hello,

unfortunately we can not offer you a refund, because the respective information was already published on the website where you extend your account and also in the news on our website, when you have bought your account.
We apologize for the inconvenience. Please note that we made these changes, that we can still offer our service in the future. Unfortunately are we forced to make some changes, as we keep an eye on the daily traffic volumes at all times.

Unfortunately, I renewed for a year (UGH) and RS is not willing to cancel my account and refund my money, or provide the same level of service that they offered in the past/implied to offer or change the plan and refund the difference.

That being said, I actually took their advice and contact my payment provider and told them that I am disputing the charges. So, they’re going to send some paperwork for me to sign and file my complaint. In the meantime, payment to RS will be suspended ;-)

“The volume not used is automatically transferred to the following day, up to a maximum of 10 gigabyte. If the complete download capacity is used up during one day, the premium-user is able to save another 2.66 gigabyte the following day.”

I think this means that there isn’t a limit to 2.66Gb a day like some people are saying. But you can save your usage to a max of 10gb.

Obviously not great but hey I’m sure some of us can live with that.

It seems whatever crap and humiliation rapidshare put on us, people are always sticking and uploading to it, saying how popular and irreplaceable

Talking about stupidity and slave mentality here…

  66. Rage
    November 13th, 2008 | 02:48

    @166

I agree, people are too apathetic. If we really want to stop Rapidshare’s abuse of their customers then we need to do more than just complain about it.

Signing a petition is great, but I doubt it will change what Raphishare is doing.

Lots of people not renewing their premium account will eventually hit Rapidshare’s bottomline (but it has too be a substantial number of people, at least a few thousand). And unfortunately is won’t be immediate. BTW don’t bother to dispute Rapidshare through PayPal, they’re useless.

The only other way to get people to stop using Rapidshare is to have link sharing site ban/delete all RS links.

To that end, the other thing that we could do is to actually start reporting all the RS links to abuse@rapidshare.com and tell them that the links are to copyrighted material and that they should be deleted immediately (RS won’t do anything unless you give them a tonne of personal information). But alternately, we could always send the MPAA the links and have them complain to Rapidshare. Might as well pit one moron with and another.

    What do you think?

Quota is decreased to 2.5GB, and WE HAVE TO PAY extra 22.5 EUROS [ In addition to the original 7 Euros ] to get the original 10GB per day that they chose to gave to us [7.5x30x0.1]

Meaning that the monthly account costs now 30 Euros, compared to 7 Euros last month, which is MORE THAN 400% INCREASE IN PRICE!!!!!

they say that you can update your traffic share with 250 GB instead, but here comes the fact: 44 € for something you got one month ago for the normal price.

i dont know hows making the prices at RS, but they are nuts. complete idiots, even under economic values

Just as was starting to get sick of trying to catch the links before they deleted them from their fast servers (true!).

Anyway I’m moving to netload to try it for one month..

Seems that everything I search for (mainly US/English Tv serials & movies) have both RS and netload links so why not try a different shop..

I hope ppl continue posting netload links..

    Bye bye

80 GB sux. It needs to be at least twice that, and they need to let you save up unused BW again.

Tons of RS links have been unavailable for the last fews days. People have been saying that there’s been hardware issues. Nothing has been mentioned by RS on their News page. RS has not even bothered to reinstate the daily download quota that I’ve been losing as a result of their servers failing to allow downloads.

With RS reducing the download quotas while still keeping the prices unchanged, and deducting daily quotas eventhough their servers are not making downloads available is the final straw for me. They can just go to hell and get sodomised there.

They claim that they should have increased their prices instead. So, from 300GB/month quota to 80GB/month quota, there should have been a raise of 400% in price. THANKS RAPIDSHARE!
They also say that the quota is low because ….(drum roll please)… people download too much !!!!!

Now, why would I want to pay them, if I didn’t want to download large amounts of data?

YOU SUCK BADLY GUYS… I payed through Paypal, so I’m already having Paypal to revert my payment.

I called them about this 2.66G daily limit, did not know about it after being a premium member for more than 2 years, and they were soo f@##$$ing rude to me, so bye bye to them. heartless thieves

    @186

Good luck trying to get Paypal to reverse the charge. I escalated it through them and then they told me that they couldn’t deal with service issues. So much for their dispute process. And once you escalate it, Rapidshare blocks your account, so if you lose the dispute, you loss your account. Nice.

Yeah rapidshare sucks balls and the only reason I use it because a lot of people upload content on that site. There are tons of better and free websites that do what rapidshare does. Like mediafire or http://www.uploadline.com or even megaupload.

Rapidshare's days are numbered. It's only a matter of time before they go out of business and good riddance.

I am deeply disapointed with RS. I guess there will never be a definite solution, i enjoyed RS for 4 months… now i'll look for something else… MU sound promissing. They had more than their share of my money… i'm the costumer, and i pay for the service, i have the right to do whatever i want with it… if they are not keeping their end of the bargain, i'll nove to their competitors, and that's it! It's the internet, there can be no monopoly, lots of people will remain in RS others will migrate… Always remember that we own them, not the other way around!

    jah bless

I asked Rapidshare 3 questions about this change and never got back a straight answer:

"If I understand right, and please correct me if I am wrong:
Originally it was 25GB per 5 days (or something like this)
then it was and currently is 10GB per day
and now it will be 2.66GB per day.

So if the above is true then:
I get about half the service I got when I first contracted your service.

Obviously you have researched this and are not open to discussion any more.
If I were to request a refund on my very recent renewal would you honour it?

There are still providers out there who do not present such limits "Premium
users have no quota and a bandwith of 16.000 kbit/s.""

and then I followed up with:
"Q: "If I were to request a refund on my very recent renewal would you honour it?"
please provide answers in the form of a single YES / NO"

Without any further discussion they cancelled my renewal which I had paid for in advance!!!!!!

I know we use RS for generally nefarious downloads but I paid for a service which has now been cut in half compared to what I contracted originally. I'm with the comments made by YOU DON'T GET who said it was like "If you buy a cell phone package for 100 minutes a month. Then the cell phone company tells you that they’re cutting your minutes down to 25 minutes a month and you’ll pay the same price. Are you saying this is reasonable?"

TOTALLY NOT REASONABLE!! Let the market decide. Netload here I come!!!

I hope everyone moves to some other provider when their current contract expires. At least they didn't haggle about refunding my money, in fact they seemed incredibly eager!!

Gotta love them Germans right? Evil sadistic bxxtards but what efficiency!!!! Mein Gott, es ist unglaublich!!!

Well, in case anyone is still reading these threads, I got all my money back from Rapidsh*t six month later!

After on-going dispute with RS about their service (specifically the lack of it) and then escalating it to Paypal (which was useless), I escalated to my credit card compnay. The credit appeared on my statement today!

Basically, RS locked/froze my account after complaining to Paypal and they never reactivated it even when Paypal rejected my complaint.

Good thing I paid by credit card. Raised the issue with them for now, non-delivery of service (ie paid for a year, only got three days) and never touched the account since!!!!!

Hopefully, Rs learns a lesson, but I doubt it. Anyway, since RS started to blow, I've noticed way more Megaupload and other non-Rapidshare postings!!!! That's awesome! Thanks to all the posters who don't support Rapidsh*t!

Rapidshare.com is nothing but a scam. For example, I created an account with them and paid through PayPal account. Now my account was good until the 8th of April of this month. I got home around 8:00pm USA Eastern Time on the 7th day of April and got a message from my friend who returned back from a trip in London and that he had uploaded some movies of his trip to Rapidshare.
I decided to login to my Rapidshare account when I notice the message stating this account expired on the 8th of April WHAT!
I was so mad that I emailed them and told them that it is not fair for users who live in another part of the world to be scammed out of their time. I also said because they are 6hrs ahead of my time that I automatically lose 6hrs, which to me is not 100 percent service but a way to rip-off customers that live in another part of the world.
I also told them that since their services is located in Germany; Germany users do not get ripped off of their time. They replied by saying, they are not located in Germany, but Switzerland and that there is nothing wrong with their service LOL!
I traced their Domain name NOT the IP, which are two different things, and it reported Germany, however their internet service provider is located in Netherlands.
I just want to say for those that live in other countries, beware that Rapidshare.com is a rip-off and that you will not get the full service that you expect.
