Rapidshare policy update: 80 GB download limit

I received few emails from our readers that Rapidshare changed their Users policy and it’s quite a significant change so I will write few sentences about it. Rapidshare continues to be one of the most popular filesharing services offering terabytes of data. You can find pretty much everything uploaded there, often just a few minutes after the pre time.

Anyway, the new policy affects mostly holders of Rapidshare Premium account: the main change is the download traffic limit to 80 GB per month, which is something as 2.66 gigabytes per day. Before the update, it used to be 10 gigabytes per day, so this is a pretty major limitation. Still, 80 gigabytes should be more than enough for you, unless you download all new video games and HD rips.

This change is valid only for new Premium accounts on Rapidshare, the holders of old accounts shouldn’t be affected unless they extend their account(s) after the policy change. The other important and actually very annoying change is that public, anonymous uploads will last only 10 downloads and then the data will be deleted. If you want to keep your files longer, you have to register a Collector’s account, which is free, but it’s still an extra hassle. Well, although these bad news may prevent few people from paying for Premium account at Rapidshare, I’m pretty sure the service will remain very popular nevertheless.

yeah well those “news” are 2 weeks new : o )

sucks , especially not beeing able to save till 50gb anymore, now i actually gotta think before i start grabbing something

of course RS is stell the best, just because everything is there + (at least for me) perfect speed. but let’s just hope, they change it back to something better like they already did a couple of times when they screwed up.

    2.66 gb per day?! pathetic!!!

first they increase the limit from 5 gb/d to 10 gb/d, doubling it
    (new costumers flock in)
then they make it a little more than half of the original 5g

    FU RS

i hope my old account doesn’t suffer from this

    November 8th, 2008 | 21:29

Actually, the 80-gig limit will apply to all existing account as well. I discovered this when I renewed/extended my “existing account”, even though in their news section the posted, “Existing Accounts are not affected, aside that due to the change of 10 Gigabyte maximum accumulated traffic, no download volume can be transferred from one day to another.”

I was willing to accept the 10-gig limitation a day and hence renewed my account. But reducing the service level by 75% to 2.7-gigs and charging the same price is really unreasonable. I complained to Rapidshare about this and here what they said:

From: RapidShare AG - Support Team

    Hello,

Unfortunately as soon as you extend an existing account, the new traffic regulation will be added to the account.

Kindly note that you are always able to add additional download traffic to your premium account if you need more traffic volume. Please click on the link “TrafficShare” in your premium zone to see the possibilities.

As soon as your daily traffic limit is being reached it will automatically use the traffic share. You can see how much traffic share you have in your premium zone using the link “overview of the account”.

  31. kman
    November 8th, 2008 | 22:42

80GB is not entirely true, you also get additional 55GB from traffic share (at the moment anyway), traffic share you dont use gets moved over to normal download traffic once you use up your daily 10 gig limit. So total monthly download is like 135GB, which is still crap considering it was a potential 300GB before.

  32. Dan
    November 8th, 2008 | 22:45

Netload doesnt seem a bad alternative

  33. Gx
    November 8th, 2008 | 22:45

kman you are right kind off, that was just a special one time deal they don’t do that with accounts now.

they added 55gb once only to all existing RS holder accounts.

Rapidshare are real conmen! I got the same e-mail response as @9 when I complained. And they also told me to refer to their news page on a regular basis!! Are they for real?? One day I am at 10Gb a day and upon extending my premium account they cut it down to 2.66??? That is hoodwinking the public! And it stinks to high heaven! If I had known they were going to drastically reduce their traffic share I would NEVER have extended my account! So I feel cheated, tricked, conned, bamboozled, hoodwinked!
Problem is you can’t even cancel your account and ask for your money back!
Anyway, I have signed up with megashares (whose download speeds are slower, but still work fine) and as soon as my RS Premium Shyte account expires that’s the end of my relationship with RapidCrooks. I don’t like being conned! And they can take their effing Swiss servers and stick them up their Alpholes.

My complaint was already sent to rapidshare. I’ve already renewed (took affect on Thursday) and the discovered that this downgrade in service applied to me as well. I’ve demanded that they give me my money back and cancel my account. After 3-4 e-mails to CS Rep, they’ve forwarded to their Accounting. If this fails, I’ll talk to my credit card company and file a complaint about the misleading information about the renewal and have the credit card company reverse my payment.

Who Needs Rapidshare :) when you have great sites to accommodate your needs.

  60. Achilles
    November 8th, 2008 | 23:59

Here is what we need to do everyone and as a Rapidshare Premium multi account holder here is what I have found over the space of a couple of months.

If you are seen to be downloading too much by Rapidshare - they block your IP from downloading for a period of a couple of hours.. I know this because as soon as it happens try using the site called Avoidr.com and then visit rapidshare.com using it.

Hey presto- you can now use the site again.

This is because they block your IP from downloading too much so thats the first scam they use.

The 2nd point I have to make - when you are a premium user you should expect a quick server to download from.. and in the evenings, downloading from Rapidshare from ANY of the premium servers is slow as ass.

SO… here is what I propose we do:

    1. If anyone has paid via PayPal for their Rapidshare - contact PayPal and file a complaint against your payment to them - this will start the ball rolling and you will get your money back as under the terms of service - Rapidshare has defaulted on the initial rules you bought your account for.

    2. Lets all shift over to Megaupload who’s speed is gradually getting better and better as they go.

Sorry Rapidshare, but greed and annoying your customers will get you nowhere!

  61. You don't get
    November 9th, 2008 | 00:04

    @57

Ummm… you’re missing the point and making assumptions. The usage of the user isn’t the point.

If you buy a cell phone package for 100 minutes a month. Then the cell phone company tells you that they’re cutting your minutes down to 25 minutes a month and you’ll pay the same price. Are you saying this is reasonable?

By your argument, you’re saying that this is okay for a cell company to do because people using the phone that often must be drug dealers and terrorists and therefore shouldn’t be complaining of the change in service.

  62. Beaulieu
    November 9th, 2008 | 00:05

    @57

You are right. The only way to reach 80gb a month is by downloading illegal content. It’s hard too complaint when you take a good look at why they did this. Rapidshare had to make a choice between customer and law. In the end a common ground was found and some radicals might find it unacceptable, but I think it’s a smart business move.

  63. Beaulieu
    November 9th, 2008 | 00:08

As for the price being the same, some adjustments have to be made. Rapidshare will realize that I’m sure.

Rapidshare is popular because it’s popular. So many people are uploading on this site that it becomes simple to find what you are looking for. Maybe there is a download limit, but it’s still the most use for direct links. You can always rely on the community.

If you are a videographer or magazine designer I’m sorry but Rapidshare is not suited for your work. I’m sure you’re gonna adapt and find better alternatives.

  76. my email
    November 9th, 2008 | 00:40

    Hello,

We apologize for the inconvenience. We have made some major changes which has
caused to the problem you were facing. Kindly note, the information “traffic
left” shows you the daily limit. As soon as you have used the daily limit your

    “trafficShare” will be used automatically.

Premium Account is going to be reduced from 10 Gigabyte a day to 80 Gigabyte a
month, at continuous exact daily pro rata billing. The sum of accumulated
download-traffic is going to be reduced from 50 Gigabyte to 10 Gigabyte.
Personal web storage space is going to continue to be set to 500 Gigabyte. The
changes only apply to new Premium Account and extension. Running Accounts are
    not affected.

Prices for TrafficShare-packages have been reduced considerably. You can apply
these to your own downloads with immediate effect. If you download a file and
your download quota is exhausted, the system automatically allocates 1
Gigabyte of the TrafficShare quota for download traffic. As long as you hold a
TrafficShare balance, no error message will appear. The advantage for less
regular users is that the prices are not going to be increased. The advantage
for more frequent users is that by any desired increase in TrafficShare
balance, maximum download volume is no longer dictated. By this we also hope
to increase the interest in our TrafficShare model. For all existing Premium
Accounts the old conditions are in place (10 Gigabyte download per day),
however, you can already make use and profit of the new TrafficShare model.

All the details about the changes can be read on our news page.

Please let us know if the problem still persists.

    Best regards,

    Support Team

To be quite honest, I have no sympathy for people who use Rapidshare. I purchased a year’s account a couple of months ago, and within one day, they had changed their download limit. I called them up straight away and demanded a refund because I knew that any company who juggled with their terms of service this way are bad news.

Over the past year, Rapidshare have changed their limits more times than I’ve had hot dinners. It’s unacceptable. Yes, the company should be held responsible, by issuing partial refunds for anyone who wants out. But also, the users really shouldn’t keep buying new accounts when they see how the download rates are changing so frequently. You have to be a smart consumer nowadays!

I suggest everyone emails or calls Rapidshare, requests partial refunds on their accounts and never purchases one again. Get back to using torrents, fools!

    Dear Irony Alert,

I own UT III, Sins of a Solar Empire, Neverwinter Nights I, II, Star Ware Empire at Ware and Force of Corruption, Supreme Commander, Forge Alliances, Empire Earth III and a load of other games. I also have well over 800 DVDs. ALL OF THEM LEGIT and BOUGHT RETAIL FROM A STORE! I actually bought some new games last week from Future Shop.

I have no issues with testing things out first to see if worth the money. And for the most part, if I don’t like what I DL, then I actually don’t use it. In fact, I wouldn’t have bought quite a bit of the stuff I own now, if I didn’t DLed it first.

Even though the amount of money is not a big deal to me, the idea that RS thinks it’s alright to change their service like that is not right.

This is great news! If it meant we wouldn’t have to see RS links here anymore. Unfortunately the world is full of stupid people so it probably won’t.

It says this on my rs premium account:

You are going to continue to be credited with 10 GB download traffic per day, until 14.04.2009. It is 157 days remaining.

    @75

I think they’re trying to make the point that there’s other users who can use high bandwidth and this service reduction isn’t fair to everyone, not just for people who use the service for “file sharing” activities. (contrary to what irony alert is suggesting)

    Cheers.

If 80 GB is not enough for you, you need to get a life.

The fall of RapidShare. It already sucked compared to competitors, but this is the final straw. Only those who already wasted their money on the service will be brainwashed enough to keep supporting the company.

MegaUpload is probably my fave, esp. for how great they treat ALL (paying or nonpaying) members and guests.

    @91

People use to say that too when newsgroups DL limit was 2 megs a day. Things change. If people are willing to pay for “premium” service then they should get it. Get over it.

I really do not feel RS accounts or similar pay structures flow in the same respect as Torrents or file sharing services. Majority of the downloads are not “legal” I believe no money should be made from these downloads and all should be shared, which the scene should be about. I will never buy a RS account but stick with torrents and seed what I twice what I take as payment.

    @91

The 80GB limit is really not the issue…it’s the daily limit.

Only back in June did RS tell us they would give ‘higher flexibility for premium-users’. 4 months later - POW!!

They told us - Simplified Rules: Download 10 Gigabyte per Day - June 26, 2008.

C’mon RS - stop messing around. You will lose customers.

I don’t really understand all the ”if you use RS you are stupid anyway” type comments. It’s just the same as megaupload. I have been a RS premium user for over a year now and it’s great getting the latest PC games in about 25 minutes as opposed to the usual torrent speeds which are anywhere between a few hours and a few days.

Costs next to nothing, like the price of a coffee, per week.

I *WAS* a little miffed when i read this post, but i think i probably only use about 80Gb a month anyway. But yeah, if it starts to affect me negatively at all, i’ll just go investigate MegaUpload again and switch over if needed.

  96. Another Point of View
    November 9th, 2008 | 01:57

    Somewhat off topic.

Actually, if you think about it, piracy doesn’t save you any money. All it does is change your spending habits.

Instead of spending money on CDs to get music, you DL it and spend more money to buy a 80-gig MP3 Player.

Instead of buying movies, you DL them and spend more money buying a better sound system and 52″ LCD TV.

Instead of buying video games, you DL them and spend more money to upgrade you computer (processor, vid card, LCD, surround sound) to play them.

They money is still spent, it’s just somewhere else. Keep in mind that some of the content makers are also the sellers of the equipment that you use to play them like Sony.

You can’t really “pirate” the device, just the content. So one day, the idea of piracy might be mute and might all be given away for free to make people buy the device.

Just a another point of view.

Torrents are so slow here as our isp blocks them (and p2p) so basically rapidshare is the best way to get value out of our broadband. And it is a small price to pay for the stuff you get!!
