Reason is the one of the best music applications on the market, THIS IS NOT A TOY OR GIMMICK like FL Studio or the many pretenders to music production.

Pair this up with Cubase/Nuendo (or Logic/Pro Tools for Mac users) and a few other programs such as Absynth, Reaktor, Battery, Storm and a few others and you have a self contained studio in your PC.

It is used by music professionals, eg: the Prodigy album “Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned” was written/produced entirely in Reason and then mastered in Pro Tools.

So if you want your music to sound “real” and not like an old Protracker/Modtracker tune or the loading screen from a SNES then Reason is a damn good place to start from.

tell that to Liam Howlett and Richie Hawtin dude.

..and instead of just posting pointless garbage why dont you give us the benefit of your great knowledge and tell us what you think is music production software that isnt for n***s (i refuse to type txt speak)

I think that rlslog should start requireing registration then maybe some of the useless comments would stop.

    wow, thank you x 100.

I love reason. yeh it might not be pro-tools, but its great for quickly making toonz. then all you need to do is add it in to cubase to render it through a hardware synth or whatever.

reans is for noobs is the most ridiculous thing ive heard, if you knew anything about music production youd know that serious producers use more than one program. Anyway I’ve had songs that I’ve made purely using reason demoed on a national radio station and sold a fair few copies on itunes and soundclick, Ive had the number 1 spot on the soundclick charts several times.

so basically , only a bad workman blames his tools, you probably arent even aware half the things you can do with reason.

“The HYBRID tag in the release name means that the ISO will work on both the PC and MAC, fun for all (except for linux ppl :) ).”

I have reason 3 running on Debian (works almost perfect with the latest Wine, the only tricky part was making the midi work).
I’ll try this one as well.

FL Studio isn’t a toy! In fact reason is great to have as a slave to FL Studio using rewire.

If you think FL Studio is a gimmick toy then you should learn how to use it!

after reading all these outlandish comments about what is what, and what is good and bad etc etc… whoever is talking shit about reason and FL is horribly mistaken… the people that usually say that are the people that are stuck in the analog age and cant grasp music apps… its a new era of production these days… its good to know both ends of the game… if you can rock a beat with a mpc3000 and a triton, hell yeah… you can make the same quality if not better in reason andn pro tools 7… its different these days… gotta change with the times…

  22. Bob Dole
    October 2nd, 2007 | 21:15

Fl Studio is an interesting application but i have found thats it`s more based around a “loop creation” method of contruction as oppossed to a “real” sequencer style ap like Reason.

not that this is a bad thing by any means but it makes it a different kind of music creation method. One that is almost definetley aimed at beginners. I found FL to be similiar in useage method as acid or ableton live, i`ve been in a fair few studios in my time and seen Reason in a few of them but i`ve never seen FL in any, I`d rate FL as a semi pro program whereas Reason is a pro ap.

I did always prefer using cubase as the master sequencer with reason synched via rewire so the vst issue has never really come up with me but it would be nice i admit to have proper VST support but as i feel most people will be using another ap to master with then it isnt the biggest problem really.

I may have been a toch hasty in including FL amongst the “pretenders” but from my admittedly limted experince with the program, Reason appears in a different league.

PS It`s nice to see some constructive comments and relies for once, my faith in himan nature is now somewhat restored.

  23. ViSiTor
    October 2nd, 2007 | 21:44

Well im in the FL studio camp here and have to totally disagree that it is anywhere near a toy! I mean in what way is it a toy? The sound quality? The effects or instruments are of lower quality than say those of reason or cubase or logic? Well i say BALLS! FL has just as good quality sound, effects and innstruments as any other DAW (Digital Audio Workstation for anyone who was wondering) out there!

Dont get me wrong i dont dislike reason, i just dont really like the workflow but hey, whatever floats ya boat and all that. lol I actually really wanted to learn to love reason because of all the fan boys that hype the sh!t out of it and even tho its a great app, i still cant get used to the workflow and lack of vst sopport. Whereas FL has that lightening fast workflow of where you have an idea and get it down straight away and in say reason or cubase it might take you awhile before you mange to get it out or even worse loss your idea altogether.

Anyways the great DAW debate will always go on with people sopporting one thing and other another etc etc… So i just say Its not what ya got but how you use it. Think about it and like someone said before a bad workman blames his tools. I will however download this version of reason and see if the workflow has improved plus i wanna check out that new modular synth, the demos of it sound amazing!

    Cheers rlslog!

    October 2nd, 2007 | 21:48

right ive used all the programmes and i must say reason is horrible for some things but its great for others so what do you do??? you use more than reason to make a good track..i can tell whats been written on reason in 5 seconds so i use as many progs as i can especially the vsts…big up reason for its fat drum machine but aside from that cmon its a toy!!

  25. ViSiTor
    October 2nd, 2007 | 21:52

Come on you can call any DAW a toy if you dont know how to use it or use it for small things. i wouldnt say any DAW (Like reaper for example)should be classed as a toy because its the person using it not actually digging in deep and using it to there full potential. Just my opinion, like it or not.

  26. Section Eight
    October 2nd, 2007 | 22:04

No matter what app you’re using, being FL or Reason, its going to have that “techno” sound… i’ve found that FL is great for electronic music due to the sequencing on it being so cut and dry… Reason coupled with a good midi controller (i use the Akai MPD 24 and a M audio 88 key keyboard) its unstoppable… alot of people need to realize that just using the app by itself doesnt do it justice, you need a midi controller… so with all that said, i’m still sticking to reason rewired into pro tools 7… on another note, Reason has Great modules for mastering. To each his own… but big name people (in the hip hop genre in the US at least) are releasing records here that are solely cut on reason, with the exception of the vocals being recorded via pro tools 7…

    October 2nd, 2007 | 22:09

@ 26… i totally agree… alot of people have their expectations of DAW’s set way too high. I’ve known a few people that have gotten DAW’s and installed, and they though magically they would click the mouse a couple of times and crank out a masterpiece, just because its software doesnt mean its easy… it still takes technical know-how and the skill to be able to make great tracks in programs like these…

  29. Bob Dole
    October 2nd, 2007 | 22:29

woo hoo a debate that hasnt decended into name calling and profanity.

…and what section eight said about FL is what i meant really, it has kinda an on/off very regimented sequencer which i could never get to impart any sort of soul/swing to the music created with it, whereas Reason seemed a very organic sound, with way more feel to it.

But if FL works for you then dont change it, i was just airing my opinion as a professional sound engineer. My opinion is based on having used sequencers since the Atari ST1040E and have found that Cubase/Pro Tools are the best so then i`ve always used that as the master and other aps as slaves, which to me seems to be far more versitile than using one ap with plugins, although i will use anything if it gives a good sound from Arturia Storm, Rebirth, and a whole slew of others.

I`ll be using this upgrading from my perevious Reason 3 and can only imagine that it will improve on that, and i may try out the sequncer in here to see if there are improvments over previous versions.

Other than that once agin nice to see a debate with very little immaturity creeping in.

  30. ViSiTor
    October 2nd, 2007 | 22:44

Funny you should say that because i hear alot of people (for just starting out to pro) complain about Reasons lack of groove and swing. I mean i had this talk with a person who is kinda semi pro and knows how to use Reason in depth and he was saying how its hard to get a loose groove going in redrum like how the mpc has. We eventually found a link to import and clone mpc grooves but thats another story lol

What im trying to say here is that FL has a very sophisticated way of adding swing to and pattern be it midi or even Audio! I dont know how indepth you went with FL but it has great advanced quantisation templates and you can even make your own with velocity data too! I know from reading the whats new in reason 4 that it has now only added a new module called ReGroove Mixer to actually address this problem. It actually says and i quote

“ReGroove Mixer. The Reason sequencer has matured. Fully grown and fully featured, Reason’s music production environment now comes with vector and tempo automation, count-in, multiple lane tracks.”

Its great that they have addressed this but i mean i can remember FL having more advanced swing and quantising features since version 4! lol

  31. ViSiTor
    October 2nd, 2007 | 22:46

Sorry quoted the Reason Sequencer instead of the ReGroove Mixer! lol

“ReGroove Mixer. It’s all about timing for Reason’s new groove management console. Meet ReGroove mixer, the unquantizer.”

  32. Karl Rove
    October 3rd, 2007 | 09:23

#3: Yes, Reason is a “self contained studio in your PC”…when you chain it to programs that can do basic shit like host VST instruments and record audio tracks. As opposed to actual self-contained studios like FLS, which let you use your CPU power on the in-program VST support instead of wasting it on entire external applications that achieve the same effect.

Neither Reason nor FLS are professional studio applications (you want Pro Tools, Logic Audio Pro, Nuendo, or CuBase SX for that purpose), but FLS comes a fuck of a lot closer to the standard than Reason does.

  33. Adrenaline 87
    October 3rd, 2007 | 10:57

just wanted to add for the record i use reason as a fundamental part of my songwriting, it’s one of the nicest programs to write music with that i’ve found and if you take the time to learn how it all works you can build some amazing instruments with it, seriously work out the combinator and you can create some awesome sounds! For audio support I just use cubase 3 which does everything I need for audio but when it comes to MIDI Reason wins hands down over all the other programs in my opinion

  37. Section Eight
    October 3rd, 2007 | 16:44

@ 30… if you have the know-how of using a mpc, then reason shouldnt be too far of a stretch for you… every module in the reason arsenal is modeled after a previous piece of gear… like the NNXT for example is just like my ASR-10… this debate will go on for days… its people stuck with analog, and those who are trying to push past that level and really dig deep to realize the full potential of these DAW’s… i’m not a FL fan at all… Reason, Recycle, Pro tools, and Cubase for me… maybe a little peak pro to chop samples…

  38. Section Eight
    October 3rd, 2007 | 16:45

and on another note… for those of you that are giving this DAW a chance, loads of respect go out to you for just trying this powerful piece of gear… within the next five years, this will be a studio standard, i know it already is in a few of the studio’s i frequent out here in hollywood…

Dudes its so simple! Just select a .rar (recomended rar the 20th one), unzip it and mount the .iso file with Daemon tools. Then it will be installed as if was installed with an original dvd. The annoying “insert dvd” request will not been shown when you will try to launch Reason. :D

It’s looking for the correctly named DVD so i need to know the exact DVD name?

    Cheers

  60. JT
    October 11th, 2007 | 14:35

Xy, if your files are inside in a single rar then unzip them and burn them into a dvd. Aftwerwards, install the program from the dvd. Maybe it won’t ask you to insert the original dvd. Hope it helps!

  61. Xy
    October 12th, 2007 | 21:32

JT, thx for the reply, i uncompressed the rar file and burned the contained files and folders to a dvd and tried to install. It installed to a point then asked for the dvd. If i’d named the dvd disc i burned with the correct dvd name it would work as this is what its looking for. I had the same problem with version 3 as all 3 cd’s had to be named correctly or it would ask for them in the same way. This would work if only i could find out what the exact original dvd name is?

Got it working. Its awesome! Thor with an arp 8 pulls off some incredible stuff! Had maybe 6-7 hours intensive tryan got goosepimpled every minute, today i sourced a local copy and went to buy cos with kit as good as this the creators deserve my hard earned. This is just GOD! go pay for it! I’ve dabbled with ableton 6 and its not a patch (no pun intended) on Reason 4. Simply Incredible! and a breeze to setup with my Novation LE 49 and SE Zero controllers.

Xy, I don’t know if it will work if you insert the exact name of the dvd, but now it’s ok cause you bought the original dvd. This program worths every penny, go and buy it if you can’t install the cracked one!
