Price of AMD lower than what they paid for ATI

AMD reached its lowest share price for more than four years last week and, as a result, its market value dropped to around US$5 billion – that’s $400 million less than it paid for ATI in July 2006. Intel, AMD’s major competitor in the CPU business, has been on a roll for the past 18 months and is now worth around US$162 billion, which makes the chip giant more than 32 times the size of AMD in monetary terms. Even worse for AMD is that its partner-cum-archrival, Nvidia, has a market cap of around $19 billion, which makes it almost four times as valuable as the struggling platform company.

It’s fair to say things haven’t been going well for AMD since the middle of last year, as its two major rivals launched products that remain largely uncontested even today. Neither the Core 2 Extreme QX6700 nor the GeForce 8800 GTX have been truly surpassed in terms of performance yet and it’s not going to happen until next year. There are no two ways about it: the Phenom launch was a disappointment. This was largely down to the fact that the company found an erratum in the L3 cache Translation Lookup Buffer, which could cause serious system instabilities in certain scenarios and it prevented the company from launching a 2.4GHz Phenom CPU at the eleventh. Intel is currently the one who’s on roll…

@first, lars: Stick to the “is this better than halo 3?”, you’re pushing it too far into failure.

It is really sad to see AMD again in the shadow of Intel… They really had them by the balls for a while, and now it’s back to the pentium vs 5×86 times…

I’m actually hoping they’ll get a break soon, it is a bad strategy to rely on conquering the low power consumption, or the economy cost-vs-performance-ratio market.

If only AMD had stuck with nVidia…

So? It’s the market, peeps. They are a company that went
public, so they should expect this sooner or later.

If they happen to outmatch Intel in the future, these $400
    million will be petty change.

It’s another bump in the road. AMD has been in worse condition
in the past and they recovered. Heck, they even bought ATI,
    darn it!

Yep, that’s right… back to the early ninties where prices of a new cpu were ridiculously high.

AMD solution is to open research/development center in israel, and produce cpu in germany or other countries.

intel ownes becouse the she invested in the best human brains there is, jews. what can i say, they are blessed.

and dont take my word for it, ask amd ceo what he think about israel, he amazed on how much potential and unique understand they posses, and yet he didnt do anything, strange…

either way, i hope AMD shall rise again, she is important like linux, just more useful.

and dont take it the wrong way, i just sad to see amd goin down like that.

Well we will see, if the 2008 doesn’t bring any profits for AMD then DAAMIT will be in a tight spot, but there where tougher times for AMD in the past, they will made it back but that will take much more time.

AMD share price dropping is good! It makes it the perfect time to buy some.

Two things will happen with AMD:

    1) They eventually bring out some killer products and reclaim the performance crown = better sales = increased share price = profit for me!

    2) They go worse and someone like Samsung or IBM buy them out, inject a lot of cash, support AMD till they bring out killer products again and reclaim the performance crown = better sales = increase share price = proift for me!

Despite the talk on tech sites – AMD is still a good company – with plenty of IP and revenue potential. Buy up now boys – I know I am.

Although I liked AMD processors, they have made some bad decisions of late. Buying ailing ATI was one of them, coming out late with a SLOWER processor was another. They REALLY need to crank up the chip speeds to compete. I mean, it’s sad to see them come out with chips late and still get stomped. Back to R&D.

I think this is a great shame for both AMD and Intel. Even the Intel fanboys will hurt from this.

No one likes paying more money than they should, without AMD producing the latest and best CPU’S Intel has no reason to cut any prices on CPU’s. I dont want the price of CPU’s to go back up to how much they were back in the 90’s.

It’s a real shame and I hope AMD come back from this as I do like their chipsets however I am using An Intel quad core at the moment, just purley for performance.

Intel and Nvida are the Devil, and i sadly just bought Q6600,X38 and 512Mb 8800GTS…… So i can say that after buying my first Intel machine out of the last 7 or 8…

It really is a shame, Intel getting the Mac market, and AMD going the Ati route, if AMD could of afforded Nvidia, i think Intel would of been in a lot more trouble…

But we all owe AMD, without them technology like x64, 2Ghz Barrier, and multicore CPU’s would not of been here now.

We know that Intel would not need to do any R&D or investment in CPU design, if there was no compeition from AMD. the C2D architecture was only good, because it needed to be to beat AMD.. The P4 and Netburst architecture were a complete joke. And even things like memory controllers Intel will borrow from AMD

How sad is it that all the innovation in CPU’s has come from the company worth 5Billion, and no innovation has come from the company worth 165Billion…

well you can argue with him, but, the fact is, 99% of inetl’s cpu’s are originated from israel. the rest come from india.
so, to sum it up, pentiume was developed is israel. all the latest intel technology’s: Nehalem, penryn(i hope amd will sruvive it) core 2 due are from haifa/qiryat gat, israel. and you are ignorant.

Nice wallpaper with a christmas theme :) I like it.

Anyways I think AMD screwed up when they bought out ATI.
I also read they want to buy out ageia.. now considering there overall price drop at a company would not be a very good ideal.. even if they had the money to do so, they isnt really a good reason to get a ageia card.. they isnt a perfornace increase from what I have seen from reviews of games that support it.

AMD pretty much going to die.. all hail Nvidia and there 1500 dollar videocards.

well sins intel dont have a native cuad core yet what happends when they try a cpu with 8 cores? they gona put in 4 core 2 dual cpu’s? when amd have a native 8 core cpu?

intel will have to develop a native cpu profile fore more then 2 cpus if they want to keep ther head on the trone and personal i dont think they wont do that in the right time so amd will eventally reclame there trone.

and hoppfully learn from the last time that to stay on top you constantly need to develop there product’s ore they will fall down again.

    MORe AmD To ThE PeOpLe!!!

anyway to stimulte the market… every one gain by that… its just the intel fan boys who are to thick headed to understand that if intel is the only madjor chip maker then they wont have to care about price or preformanc to the people and then we will have to pay hugh amount of monety to get a little of preformance boost…

well lets hope amd get a big comeback :)

    December 11th, 2007 | 15:44

intel used to own amd used to be intels low brand didnt it?
then they had to break away in the fair market place and that

amd used to be the fastest processor in the world for mmultimedia i.e games etc, intel was for business ,

    amd for games

    intel for business

then pcs got good and hammered all the consoles out there they still do if you got the money , so much for the next gen consoles when pcs still have the best graphics lol , anway back to the point intel noticed how much money amd where making from the gamming market ,so thats why the core2 and quads came along

amd had talks with nvidia about buying then but intel sort of got involed and gave the impression they where intrested when in fact they where not really anyway made nvidia worth more so amd couldnt afford um they brought ati because they used to be the worlds fastest graphics cards until the 8800s
problem with amd is lack of funding and trying to do stupid things , like the worlds first true quad core not 2 core2 stuck togeather , well problem is that the tech is not good enough yet so thats why their fastest chip just keeps up with the q6600 amd are a failing company they will prolly neva go down cause as soon as a big name invests shares go up even if someone shows intrest the shares go up thus making more money what they gotta be careful is that the share holders dont get scared and start selling um cause the company worth goes down and then all the share holders get scared and try pulling out but charces of that are nill

any reason to buy amd ati at the moment well none

they are not quick enough or cheap

i mean you get bang for buck with amd well really get you head testing cause we are talking on avg 10-50 uk pounds differnece in price to intels and nvidias offerings so you have to be a real idiot to buy amd at the mo

ati have a winner with the 3850-70 caRD but then again 40 pounds more you got a 8800gt what is much better ill pay the 40pounds more any1 would we are talking 40 pounds and if you cant afford that then theres no hope

intel nvidia aint as close as you may think

the reason well look at sli

intels boards are better at this time but none of um support sli ,even thou it dont work that well , nvidia wont give intel sli on their boards ,they are all crossfire so amd are making a mint of intel for lettin um have their tech,

intel got nvidia back for not giving sli tech by not given correct info of their processors so the 680i chipset wont run 45nm processors propley or so they say (power circuit issues) fixed with 780i but 250pound m/bs that last a year and supposed to be future proof are not now , so let the lawsuits begin of that one , (every 680i motheroard box weather asus or abit etc states future proof well a year aint future proof isit?)

anyway the war is never gonna be over

amd are second rate and prolly will stay that way untill a bigboy company invests a alot so they can afoord proper research and building of their chips like intel ,

ati on the graphics side may just may beat nvidia or come close and close is ok if alot cheaper but nvidia can afford to lose money so lets seee

ive always had nvidia cards even when they where slower , better drivers , i hate framework crap , u need that installed for ati crappy drivers , thinking bout it ati used to have better drivers than nvidia so dont know wat happened there

intel and nvidia are on top

be very hard to knock then off it

    ati/amd are generation behind

next year well 9 series out the combat ati 8800 catch up card so the 9 series prolly hammer the new ati 1

processors well 45nm intels overclock well and they are much faster anyway , think about it

amds top of the line processer can only just compete with intel entry level intel 1 ..lol

ati will come back but not yet give it a few years abit of investment and there you go

Also, it was a completely painful experience to read your post, I think reading encrypted codes is easier than reading that.

But remember what happened when Intel put out the Pentium CPUs, forcing AMD to develop their own processors, putting out the K5, K6 and finally the Athlon processors.

Dont look the tree but the forest, better days are coming from amd again, intel again will be hunting amds innovations once more, ok amd didnt meet the expectations witn phenom chips, but its a big step to better thing, remember when intel rlsed their supposed dual core chipset, three years ago , this chips were the biggest joke as far technology innovation and perfomance/price etch, and then thei rlsd c3d chips and they made the difference now amd will do the same, and in fact amd is leading at the servers performance amd chips are far better the intels xeons and dont forget that in the servers market is the big cash not in desktops.
the following is an article from http://www.anandtech.com
    Introduction

“AMD has no answer to the armada of new Intel’s CPUs.”

“Penryn will be the final blow.”

These two sentences have been showing up on a lot of hardware forums around the Internet. The situation in the desktop is close to desperate for AMD as it can hardly keep pace with the third highest clocked Core 2 Duo CPU, and there are several quad core chips – either high clocked expensive ones or cheaper midrange models – that AMD simply has no answer for at present. As AMD gets closer to the launch of their own quad core, even at a humble 2GHz, Intel let the world know it will deliver a 3GHz quad core Xeon with 12 MB L2 that only needs 80W, and Intel showed that 3.33GHz is just around the corner too. However, there is a reason why Intel is more paranoid than the many hardware enthusiasts.

While most people focus on the fact that Intel’s Core CPUs win almost every benchmark in the desktop space, the battle in the server space is far from over. Look at the four socket market for example, also called the 4S space. As we showed in our previous article, the fastest Xeon MP at 3.4GHz is about as fast as the Opteron at 2.6GHz. Not bad at all, but today AMD introduces a 3.2GHz Opteron 8224, which extends AMD’s lead in the 4S space. This lead probably won’t last for long, as Intel is very close to introducing its newest quad core Xeon MP Tigerton line, but it shows that AMD is not throwing in the towel. Along with the top-end 3.2GHz 8224 (120W), a 3GHz 8222 at 95W, 3.2GHz Opteron 2224 (120W) and 3GHz 2222 (95W) are also being introduced.

The 3.2GHz Opteron 2224 is quite interesting, as it is priced at $873. This is the same price point as the dual core Intel Xeon 5160 at 3GHz and the quad core Intel Xeon 5355. The contrast with the desktop market is sharp: not one AMD desktop CPU can be found in the higher price ranges. So how does AMD’s newest offering compare to the two Intel CPUs? Is it just an attempt at deceiving IT departments into thinking the parts are comparable, or does AMD have an attractive alternative to the Intel CPUs?
    from:
    http://www.anandtech.com/IT/showdoc.aspx?i=3057

and about the one who said about the jews and israel being the better human minds, from were that comes from? in the fact that intel is making the chips there? thas is the most stupid asamption a have ever heard if that was true then the malaisians ant taiwan are the smartes off all becouse all the electronics are made there. hahahah.
what islrael has offered to the world and civilization nothing, and dont forget the first computer was constructed and worked in greece 2.500 years ago so go read some history
before saying that jews are smartest than anyone else in the world what about the greeks the egyptians the chinese with so many years of history and innovations that the modrn world is now enjoying?
