    yes, shells ftw! Unix shells are better though. Windows needs a good unix shell.(like cygwin)

    Thanks. Just started using Window’s command prompt, and although it’s almost painful to use if you’re used to the shells for unix, it’s still way better than having to use the mouse and clicking around.

    Powershell Plus is the tool to go. Freely adjustable width and length of window, dropdown-list completion and an editor with syntax highlighting for longer scripts. http://www.powershellplus.com

    Is there really ANYTHING that a prompt can do that cant be done like 10 times as fast using the windows interface?

    @17: Yes. Common examples where firing up something from the Run window or the cmd prompt would be faster than navigating through menus include “services.msc” and “control userpasswords2″.

    @17

    File listing for once…

    Renaming / moving / copying / removing lots of files using loops, list and filters…

    Service/memory management… if you don’t use for ex. VMWare all day you don’t need to keep 5 services and 2 support apps running that will eat 60 MB of ram and CPU cycles for nothing… a simple batch should do it.

    If you want an easy and fast way to unpack, sort and rename 20 movies you’ve just finished downloading and clean up all the split mess, there’s nothing like a batch job! :)

    True, cmd is not like a unix shell, but then again, not all of us need Linux!
