Portishead - Third (2008)

Portishead, a British music band from Bristol, releases their third studio album called simply “Third”. Their music style is trip hop which could be characterised as a mixture of electronic music, rap and hip hop. It’s characteristic for Bristol area and still fairly unknown, as it originated in 1990s. This is album mostly for fans of Portishead but others can give it a try too and check these unusual tunes 3 weeks before the street date.

Third is the third studio album by the trip hop group Portishead. It will be officially released on Monday, April 28, 2008. It is their first release in 10 years, and their first studio album in 11 years. It introduces a rawer, more lo-fi production sound than Portishead’s previous work. The first single from this album will be “Machine Gun,” which made its radio and download debut on March 18, 2008. It premiered on Zane Lowe’s Radio 1 show and was made available for download on the band’s official website. A UK one-sided 12 inch vinyl release is set for release on April 14, 2008.

The band was formed in Bristol, UK in 1991, by Geoff Barrow, Beth Gibbons and Adrian Utley. Previously, Barrow had been working as a tape operator (including work with Massive Attack and Tricky), Gibbons was singing in pubs, and Utley had played jazz guitar for Big John Patton and The Jazz Messengers. The trio created the short film To Kill a Dead Man, which was heavily inspired by espionage films, and its accompanying soundtrack persuaded Go! Beat Records to sign the band.

Plastic is the only one that’s close to good.

Too much reverb on every single track too, and Miss Gibbons’ voice has taken a plunge for the worst.

portishead are from portishead not bristol, although portishead is only a 15 min drive away haha.

suprised they are still going and only their 3rd album, sadly i shall pass though.

p.s this bit is utter crap

Their music style is trip hop which could be characterised as a mixture of electronic music, rap and hip hop. It’s characteristic for Bristol area and still fairly unknown, as it originated in 1990s

bristol has one of the biggest underground scremo/hardcore followings now for a long time. not some rap hip hop electronica haha.

It’s honestly too bad, but I’m gonna have to say, I wasn’t expecting anything that could top Portishead or Dummy. They probably realized that they couldn’t touch those classics.

They could have done better though. Her voice though, man, it sucks anymore, too many Newports :)

    I loved Dummy, great album.

This new album has some real gems on it and like all good music it takes awhile to get into it. Unfortunately the internet generation doesn’t have time for this, they want instantly likeable pop? The first single “Machine Gun” is awesome. I just hope the production sounds better on the final CD than it does on this poor sounding pre-release.

A definite purchase from me and well done to rlslog for finally broadening the music horizon here a little.

I just saw them live last Monday. Damn that was great. Beth has a tremendous haunting voice. And with that the sound was awesome at the venue. Can’t wait to buy the album and listen to it.
And Machine Gun was so crazy live.

Finally someone knows something real about the band. What the hell are people even here for if they’re not really music fans? I mean, how could you call yourself a music fan and not know that this album was in the works a year ago? And the tour? Jesus, they’ve been playing live shows again since last year, and are currently on a very limited European tour. And Beth and the band still sound amazing live! Friggin’ wake up or someone will toss your salad without asking. Wankers.

For those, uninformed, this high potential and rare voice of genius singer Beth Gibbons is not just a female single in this band "portishead". She released her own album called "Out of Season" back in 2003. And I love it. It's very poetic and emotional, like "portishead & dummy", although you can't notice that from first listening. Those who "REALLY" liked portishead's 'DUMMY' should understand and feel the same energy in "out of season", YOU JUST NEED TO LISTEN MORE. I have big respect for those people, and I'm happy they're back together again.

hey tucker ("she so ugly.. to think i used to jerk off to her back in 1993")
you're so much funny when you say this about someone, whose voice and personalty are so much higher from your site of view, so you could craw whole your life to reach the top enough so you can see them, but you'll steel be the one miserable creature they're only run over.
