I’m sure most of you have heard about this and are eager to get your hands on this new Valve creation, and now thanks to UNLEASHED you can finally play Portal. Portal is basically a game where the environments are full of Portals which allow you to travel to different areas to solve various puzzles and objectives. It’s been developed by Valve so expect beautiful graphics (since it uses Valve’s game engine) similar to those of Half Life 2. The game isn’t that big coming in at 2.38 GB so it won’t take to long to download. I won’t waste anymore time since I want to start playing this game right now

Portal is a single-player first-person action/puzzle video game developed by Valve, shipping in a bundle package known as The Orange Box which also includes Half-Life 2: Episode Two and Team Fortress 2 as well as Half-Life 2 and Episode One. The Orange Box was released for PC and Xbox 360 on October 10, 2007, and will be released for the PlayStation 3 sometime in November. The Windows version of the game is also available for download separately through Steam for $19.95.[2] Portal became available for preloading as part of The Orange Box through Steam on October 2, 2007.
Unleashed just put a fix online, I don’t know what it fixes (the NFO doesnt make things very clear, does it?), but I added it to the bottom of this post. I think you’ll need it – Bram
For the people having problems installing do this: “After you extract go into the portal folder Right click on hl2 icon and create shortcut. Right click on the shortcut u made go to properties on the target line the one that says something like C:\unl-prtl\portal\hl2.exe add -steam -game portal after it. Go back to portal folder and open steamEmu with notepad. Where it says MountCacheManual = 428 .. Change the 428 to 405 and save it. Then open the game it. Worked for me”
If you still can’t get to work just buy Orange Box since it’s well worth the price

you have to extract the files into a directory and then make a shorcut of the hl2.exe, right click copy of hl2.exe and select properties, then where it says
“C:\program files\portal\hl2.exe”
(your directory may vary) make it say
“C:\program files\portal\hl2.exe” -steam -game portal
i tried this and when i run the shortcut i get an error message

Also, after you play HL2: Episode 2, you get what the Aperture Science Center is and when/where the events that you play through take place int he Half-Life universe.
Awesome, but way too short, you can probably play through Ep 2 and Portal in about 5-7 hours.

Ok, I got it to work. What you should do is change “steamappsdir= xxxx” in the ini file to the folder where you unrared all the cfg files.
example: “SteamAppsDir = C:\unl-prtl\portal”

Hmm… cant rly get it to work… i have tried the two sugested solutions but none seem to work for me… all i get when I enter the game is, first the valve intro, and then only a screen of like 3 different colors that blend together, and then my pc reboots…
Its such a shame… I rly looked forward to playing this game…

Make sure your (SteamEmu.ini) has the same as above.
The reali fix for MountAppFilesystem() failed problem should say in the ini file:
SteamAppsDir = .
The fix to the Mount Appfilesystem() Failed: was said before.
Search the file “SteamEmu.ini” and change the line:
MountCacheManual = 428
So it reads:
MountCacheManual = 405
Thats all, change a 428 for a 405 and the game works.

The fix was already avalaible on torrent-sites hours ago with a new steamEmu.ini…and the 408 number still doesnt’change anything for me … the “Mount Appfilesystem() Failed” error is still there and the game won’t start …
By the way , the statute of SteamappsDir still remains unclear for me : do we indicate the source of the cfg file ( as indicated in comments section ) or indicate the source of SteamApps ???

The Boss is a fricking pain in the ass. Everytime I got about 2 minutes left and can’t get to the last orb. I hate puzzles under pressure.
if only there were real seeds… (I’m using 11 trackers.. but no seeds… Unless the seeder is part of the peers, which would make sense since i’m downloading a steady 55kb/sec, hope this’ll work…

it worked fine here, unrar the game, replace .ini file from fix, create and edit shortcut…
the game is awesome, and the “voice” always makes me laugh with the silly jokes, and the puzzles are all well constructed
@proff, go further into the “story” and you’ll get an upgrade to your “hand portal device” only then you can use it

I was having the error too. The reason for it is a bad unpacking of the rars.
You MUST unpack using the .rar file, not the .00 ones etc.

Wow, I just played it and I gotta say, it sucks balls.
I don’t see the stuff where u can edit the target of ur shorcut, mine doesnt have that target line thing.
Works like a charm, pretty fun game, but its WAAAAY too simple, i wouldnt call myself smart and I didnt spend more than 3-5 mins on each map TOPS, they should make it alot more challenging, just downloaded it and im already finished with it >_

It wont work for me, i did the shortcut thing but when i double click the shortcut it just says hl2.exe has stopped working.
For the guy who can’t get a red portal, it’s probably because u don’t have the upgrade yet. At first, u don’t get a gun at all, then they give u one that can only make a blue portal, and they make a red one for u. Theres a level where the upgraded gun that shoots both portals sits on a rotating turret, shooting red portals in each direction. Once u reach it, u get the gun that can make red and blue portals.
aaaahhh, so funny, takes me about 3 hours and a lot of fun =)!!

Hi boyz, i’m going sick with hl2 episode 2. The error is the one reported here: “Mountapplfilesystem() faied”. I tried everything, i’m sure i’ve done correctly: unpacked from .rar and not from .00, replaced the .ini, created a shortcut. It does not work. Same error. Someone can help me?

I have a problem after I did the Steam ini thing it starts up but when its on the loading screen it just quits without warning and no error message
ALRIGHT. SOMEBODY PLEASE MAKE INSTRUCTIONS FOR THIS WORTH WHILE.
I have my regular steam directory on the F: drive. This leaves me with F:\Program Files\steam ~~~~ yada yada yada.
I copied the .gcf files from the rar file into that steam directory. That steam directory being the one on my F: drive.
Once I have all the .gcf copied there, I extracted the portal file from the download to my desktop, which is on the C: drive. Anything obvious I have done wrong so far?

you gotta have everything in the same directory like cs or dod. inside the steamapps folder you put your portal folder there
i don’t get it, why are you trying to get an answer to make your hl2 epi2 working in the portal post?
the solutions to make the game working are everywhere, and when i say game i mean PORTAL not HALF-LIFE 2 EPISODE 2… stop asking and answering here for episode 2, even if the solution is similar doesn’t mean it’s going to work for episode 2
now, just in case you are still trying to get your portal game to work, here it is the guide to make your PORTAL game work (NOT hl2 epi 2):
1. find the unl-prtl.rar file and extract all its content to a new folder anywhere in your pc (example C:\portaldir)
2. extract the content of the fix (unl-prtlf.rar) to the “C:\portaldir\portal” directory and replace the file when asked
3. still in the same directory right-click the “hl2.exe” file and chose “create shortcut”
4. right-click the shortcut and chose properties, and in the target field just add “-steam -game portal” (without quotes), in the end, it should look like this: “C:\portaldir\portal\hl2.exe -steam -game portal” (without the quotes)
5. click ok and try running the game by double-clicking the shortcut you’ve just created

why did you move them to the steam directory?? Read the NFO file. All you need to do is extract the files, it will create a “Portal” folder. In that folder will be a Half-Life icon. Make a shortcut to your desktop. Right click the shortcut go to properties and change the properties like mentionned above, then run it, that’s it, don’t forget to put the fixed files in the portal folder, that’s what i did and it works great
I’m having the same problem as TWOY. I extracted the files, copied the fix, and created the shortcut. When I double click the shortcut it shows me the Valve opening video then it goes to the Portal Loading screen. It sits there for a bit then it crashes saying hl2.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. I don’t have a copy of steam installed on my laptop (which is what I’m currently trying to get this installed on). Any suggestions?

For those of you on Windows Vista Having problems with the game crashing after Valve loading screen.
Right click on your shortcut and go to properties
go to the “Compatibility” shortcut
click “Run this program in compatibility mode for:
make sure “Windows XP(Service Pack 2)” is selected
and now it works.

it works its nothing to do with halflife 2 install i have 2 hard drives and portal is on 2nd hard drive so not even close to steam the fix only changes a line of text , if your getting the load screen then you have done it right if your pc crashes /hangs consider if you have a gcard that can handle the game

the whole orange box thing is a rip off consider most people who are waitting for tf2 already fooking playing hl2 or css so have them .so why we have to pay for games we already have? portal is total crap graphics on par with tfc. the biggest selling point for hl2 was css ? anyone who ever owned it can tell you that , you had to buy a single player game what was good , but not jaw dropping , to get counter strike source , now hl2 comes top of nearly all polls as best game of all time,it wouldnt if you didnt have access to the online mods for the game. same with orangebox i only want tf2 not the rest of the shyte that comes with it

for those who are having problem edit the shortcut, try one of the following combinations in the target field, try to not copy/paste, type it instead:

It seems that there are a couple recurring problems.
1.) problems with the shortcut
– the target should read
“C:\portaldir\portal\hl2.exe” -steam -game portal
INCLUDING quotes where the path is the location of your hl2.exe.
2.) Error saying “Mount AppFileSystem() failed:”
– Make sure you extract the files from unl-prtl.rar, NOT any other rar file. Also, inside the SteamEmu.ini file make sure the MountCacheManual is set to 405. If this doesn’t work, try setting it to 428.
3.) hl2.exe crashes at loading screen.
– Not a clue. Anyone have a solution for this? This is where I’m at
I’m trying this Portal on laptop (XP SP2, Ati Mobility Radeon X1600, 1GB memory) and I’ve done so far: Unrar files to from , copied the fix to and made shortcut for with necessary adds.
When I start the shortcut, I got the Valve logo and then my screen shows some weird, static colors for some time. Then I got to the main game screen, only I don’t see the selections at all. I can see the animation about security camera panning around showing cubic room. I can hear sounds when I move mouse over invisible selections and click on them, but I can’t see them.

Oh, a note on the 3rd problem, it seems that on Vista it helps to set compatability for the shortcut to Win XP SP2. I don’t currently know any way to help with those on XP, such as myself.

That sounds like a video problem, make sure you have the latest drivers for your video.

Well, I’ve read everything here, but I’m getting a different problem. I did the whole -steam -game portal thing but whenever I click on the shortcut, I get this error:
The procedure entry point D3DPERF_SetOptions could not be located in the dynamic link library d3d9.dll.
I get that error twice then an “Bla has encountered a problem” window.
Anyone know what’s wrong?

i dont know if they are all necessary, the two first are, but the others i dont know, try and mess around with it, maybe you can play fullscreen and with dx9. hope it helps, good luck
Well I still haven’t gotten it working on my laptop, but I followed the same method of installing it on my desktop and it works perfectly. The vguimatsurface.dll error I’m pretty sure has to do with the video card. My laptop uses onboard video which evidently isn’t good enough.
Follow This For Portal Installation
(1) Important You Can Only Extract Into “C” Drive Where Windows Is Installed
(2) Then Create A Folder Called “Portal” So It Will Look Like This C:\Portal
(3) After You Extracted The Unleashed Rar Files Into C:\Portal ,Then Get The
Portal Fixed-Unleashed rar File And Extract Into C:\Portal\portal And It Should
OverWrite The “SteamEmu” Original Press Yes To OverWrite The File..
(4) Then In Folder Where The Halflife 2 Exe Is Which Is Called “hl2″ And Is A Orange Icon
Right Click The Icon And Create ShortCut AnyWhere On The Computer
(5) Then Right Click The Shortcut Go Properties And Where It Says “Target” Copy And Paste
This Information In C:\Portal\portal\hl2.exe -steam -game portal Press Apply
(6) And Thats It Have Fun

Can I Just Say I am playing the new Unreal Tournament 3 demo
and it bloody well rocks the graphics are awesome and the
levels OMG you have to see it to belive i have Vista Ultimate
installed with a intel 2 core duo E6850 with a 8800 gtx
and 2 gig of corsair ram ,,the game was running a bit laggy
i had everything maxed out and was running at 1280x 1024

Vader thanks for your explanation on how to get this to work, however it is a bit incorrect regarding it must be extracted to C drive (or drive with windows installed).
If you use the Unleashed SteamEmu.ini fix http://www.newtorrents.info/torrent/28452/Portal.FIX-Unleashed.html
You can put it on any drive and folder of your choosing. Once the fix is downloaded backup the original SteamEmu.ini then copy fixed Unleashed SteamEmu.ini over the original.
You should now be able to run it no matter where you extracted it.
By the way good call on the Unreal Tournament 3 demo!!!
GlaDOS, yeah I ‘tried’ updating it. But every time I try updating directx with the web setup it always fails. Is there any other way to update it without Microsoft’s web setup?

chronja.. find the game.info file and place it in hl2 directory. the game.info file is in one of the folders you have check each one and then place it in the hl2 folder.

It works,i’ll try to explain it in some simple steps
1- Unrar Portal-Unleashed with Winrar
2- Create a shortcut of hl2 exe on your desktop
3- Right click on shortcut, properties,and write this “C:\Program Files\portal\hl2.exe -steam -game portal” and press apply
4- Download Portal.FIX-Unleashed
5- Unrar content of the fix with Winrar
6- Copy the document which in most cases is SteamEmu to the Portal folder overwriting the existing one
7- Now the game should work
If any questions write them in the comments.
I placed the gameinfo.txt file in the hl2 folder, and i can start up the game, but when i click new game it shows the Half Life 2 chapters starting at Insertion Point, and when i click start new game nothing happens. Also in the backround it shows the Half Life 2 screen from the 1st level where you get out of the train station. Whats going on?

Now why the hell didn’t they put specific directions in the NFO?? Games works fine when you use thomas’ directions and you add -steam -game portal outside the quotes.
I did all of the above, and I get to the loading screen, then it crashes to the desktop saying that it needs to close. I am using vista with the compatibility mode set to XP SP2. Any ideas how to fix this?
i got the same problem as asher. i downloaded the webupdate of directx (luckily it downloaded and installed fine), restarted but i get the same message again. i checked my d3d9.dll, its in the System32 folder where it should be. Should i put it somewhere else too? I tried putting it in the portal folder just for the sake of it, but nothing. something about entry point not found, D3DPERF_SetOptions could not be located in d3d9.dll, and i get this message twice right before the windows “send error report?” message box pops up. i did the shortcut thing and updated the ini and tried everything suggested here, but the problem is a totally different one and I only found Asher with the same problem.

Ok I got the game running near-perfect. But my volume is very low. I can hear the sounds, but super quiet, I can hear the distortion from my Headphone wires if I have the game loud enough to play…. Any ideas?
I have played through the game completely, but now my bonus maps crash at the end of each level (in the end level chamber)

The blue screen which most of you have is caused by not having the appropriate video cards,i had the same problems before i changed my video card.
The crashes are the same thing, your video card cant support it in most casses.
About the bonus maps, i have noi clue why they crash for you danieru.
Jemp, the crash is probably caused by your video card, although i cant be certain, Vista is really unpredictable for games.

For the problem “Mountapplfilesystem() failed” even after changing 428 to 405 … I resolved this problem by changing the first line ..\ to .. (removing the trailing backslash)

1. Make your shortcut for hl2.exe that is INSIDE the portal unleashed folder -the one you downloaded, not hl2.exe from the game half life 2
2. Go to where it says TARGET under shortcut tab.
3. Add quotes around whatever is there -like: “kevin/portal/hl2/portal” or whatever your place is
4. After adding the quotes place these words OUTSIDE of the quotes -steam -game portal
5. If it didn’t work after that, go to run. Type in dxdiag. Then go to sound. Where it says sound acceleration move the bar to none. Then, go back to the shortcut and type all of these after the quotes:
-steam -game portal -window -dxlevel 81 +mat_forcehardwaresync 0 -dev
It should run fine now.

Any errors pertaining to this, are related to a fault within your directX, suggest you re-install 9b, 9c to correct problem.
Visual problems such as water problems should clear up, also recommended video driver upgrade or re-installation.
The crash is probably caused by your video card, which in most cases is, i would recommend installing new drivers, if that doesnt work, you need a better video card.
The quotes are not neede, at least for me they aren’t.

Hey everyone got a litle problem but Wanted to be sure of something first. I download portal and stuff extract it with right .rar and here is what I get in folder setup:

So yeah my portal folder is only 42 mo and my Portal-Unleashed (which cointains all the *gcf files that are 4.92 Go).
Is this a problem and the main reason i’m getting :

Yes, finally. I got it to work after trying nearly everything (changed the 428 to 405, made shortcut, did all that) but the thing that made the difference was Dxarf’s comment. I didn’t read it too carefully before.
The fix was to update the SteamEmu.ini file to say
SteamAppsDir = C:\portal\ (the main folder I extracted everything to, which contains another portal folder, and all the gcf files) as opposed to SteamAppsDir = C:\portal\portal\ (the folder that hl2.exe, SteamEmu.ini, etc are in)
after reading it again and noticing he said the folder with the gcf files, I remembered that I linked it to the wrong folder, so I redid it knowing it wouldnt hurt and was very surprised to find that it finally worked. thanks all
so all my.rar folders contain data in the amount of 97,657 kb except unl-prtl.r24 which contains data thats 49,985 kb is this my problem also is having steam installed causing problems…any help ..please…. i keep getting mountapp problem…ive just extracted from unl-prtl.rar but it seems to also extract from the other 24 rars is this correct?

This is what I used. It’s faster than rapidshare, but not super speedy. If you continuously download them, you can get them in about 36 hours.

That works for some.
One guy got rid of his problems by changing the
SteamAppsDir = ..\
from ..\ to ..

I have searched. There is no way as of now to not crash after the advanced levels. There must just be a file missing. But it shouldn’t be that big a deal, seeing as how unleashed is free.

For the launcher.dll try to find the file that you extracted it from -try removing .rar or whatever files and opening them until you find the SPECIFIC one/two that it is stored in and re-extract it, then move it in the portal/bin folder and replace the old one. if it doesn’t work after that, use the link I posted up earlier.

Make sure that your portal game is NOT in your sourcemods folder. Make it separate from everything else.
BTW- The game will run somewhat faster if placed closer to the beginning of a target line. (use a short one)

Your problem I believe is in the portal/bin folder, which is the container of the files that you see in the game. That one, I believe is the main ground or something.
Try to re-extract the file and replace it or re-download the game from the link I posted earlier– works for me. Make sure to follow the steps I put up earlier.

Try to put the graphics quality on low, or put on those target add-ons after the quotes on your shortcut:

-window runs the game in a window
-dxlevel 81 makes the game run better on old graphics cards.
I have ATI RADEON X200 series card (bad), and it still runs fine on mine.
-The other ones are just to help “force” the game to work.

I have not erased any registries and I got the game to work. I unrar the files on my desktop directory. I’m not sure how i got it working. I updated my video card (Radeon 9800 sec pro) and I changed the steamemu address to where to GCF files are. So it will be:
[Options]
SteamAppsDir = C:\Documents and Settings\jojo\Desktop\Portal-Unleashed\unl-prtl\
; Used if UseCacheFileSystem = True
(make sure you add the \ ) at the end of the address typed
And I changed the MountCacheManual to 405.
Of course I also made the shortcut and added the extra -steam -game portal (check to see if the details in shortcut are really changed… I had to do it again because for some reason the added details did not save the first time)
BTW: I have steam installed and I did not touch ANY files of it, including registries. Also just turn off your firewall, this may not be the problem but it may prevent other annoyances from happening.
thats not true..you DO NOT HAVE TO ERASE STEAM or delete steam or any registry entries to get it to work you have to #1 unpack from the .rar not the numbered rars….#2 leave .gcf files where they get deposited in the unpacking i.e dont move them to another folder…and edit the steamemu .ini file as explained you dont even need the fix if you follow the instructions posted for editing the .ini also make sure to add in the steamemu.ini the following SteamAppsDir= C:\portal thats it just replace what i have as an example with your drive and just the initial folder that you unpacked everything to…hope this helps….also make sure to create the shortcut as explained in the nfo

I can get to the first room but if I try to go through the first portal it crashes. I have XP.
I have tried the startup options aboe with -dxlevel 70/80/81 and 90. And changing the portal options in the menu, but no luck.
When it crashes it does the ‘hl2.exe has stopped working’ message.
AP – sounds like the problem we have is exactly the same. I purchased The Orange Box and HL2 works but Team Fortress 2 and Portal don’t.

Do you have the integrated Intel graphics engine too? I have 2 gb of RAM so I know that’s not the issue.
If you don’t know go to the start menu, go to run, and type in ‘dxdiag’ without quotes. Tell me what it says under the ‘Display’ tab.
I’ve updated all my drivers–no luck. Even added a “dual processor fix’ that was recommended on steam’s website. Still no luck.

Psylock i have tryed everything you said, with the dxdiag and all, tryed moving it around, tryed the original folder to where it all unrared too, i have downloaded it twice now, both times unzipped the .rar made sure it wasnt .00 or anything, and ive got the fix, i put the steamappdir thingy set to where my .gcf and steamemu are right now, and after doing that i managed to get ti to start, but when it gets to the screen where it is loading and is all blury, the loading thing is in the corner, i can a error sound and i have to alt f4 it to get out and dont get a chance to read the error, so it crashed right after the intro screen.. i have tryed everything my computer is new and up to date, have latest version of direct x… i need help. have been trying to fix this forever and nothing ever works for me.. dont know why…
The instruction at “0×00000009″ referenced memory at “0×0000009″. The memory could not be “read”. thats the error that pops up when i try to run it just in windows, im assuming its the same one when not in window mode

This is a DirectX problem. The only way I can get past the hl2.exe loading crash is to run -dxlevel 80 in the launch property window. I am an XP Media Center user with integrated Intel Video. My other computer also runs XP but uses an older video card – it mostly runs Team Fortress 2 fine with only minor problems.

To elaborate, I’ve tried everything in here so far, I have the updated .ini, and the shortcut with just about every command line addition mentioned. In addition, I’ve tried setting all the graphics settings to the lowest quality, set portal depth to 0, played in windowed mode, and still it crashes when I get close to or go through the portal. I’m on XP and have integrated Intel video.

I have one of the oldest ATI radeon cards ever released. The x200. If you have anything older than that, don’t even attempt to run this game. It runs slower than half life 2.

However, it seems that people with integrated Intel video cards cannot run Steam games very well.
I have the Mobile Intel 945 Express Chipset. Even when I run Half-Life 2 (which I bought when it came out – it worked on my computer at the time – I had not tried to play it on this one until today), Steam tells me that they do not have my video card in their database.
Therefore, even after using all the fixes and different suggestions, I managed to change Portal from not even loading, to getting to a portal opening. However, no matter what I do, it continues to crash when a portal opens, that is, at the beginning of the game.
So, I will continue to try to figure out the issue and fix it.

I could be wrong, but I think the only solution will be either getting a new video card (really hard to do with a laptop), or make Steam fix Portal and HL2 so that they work on integrated intel chips.
However, I could not stand not playing it anymore, so I borrowed a friend’s computer last night and spent four hours playing it. So I, unfortunately, would suggest doing that because I do not see the Intel problem getting fixed soon.

So nobody with an Intel graphics chip has been able to make this game work? I was able to make the original HL2 work, so I don’t see why this shouldn’t work.

For the record, I’m running an ATI Mobility Radeon Xpress x200. I have no knowledge of whether or not this game will work with an Intel integrated chipset – it doesn’t look like it from the posts on this board. Go to “http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/” to see if they have anything about your chipset. They are sometimes slow to update which games they support, but HL2 may be on there already.
First off, I unrared from .00 as opposed to .rar, and I moved the “portal” directory into “C:\Program Files\Portal”. I then created a shortcut of hl2.exe and added “-steam -game portal” (no quotes) after hl2.exe in the target field of the shortcut. I got an “AppFileSystem” error and other errors that said something about “Mount” which I didn’t understand.
Then I started tweaking things to figure this out. First, do as others have said and go into the Steamemu.ini and make the 428 to 405 change mentioned above.
Then, take your “Portal” directory (with the lowercase “portal” inside it) and move it directly to the C: drive, resulting in the path “C:\Portal\portal”. This did wonders for me and I was finally able to get to the menu screen!
The game would run just fine, but after a few minutes of gameplay I would get a version of a blue screen of death that would flicker blue with some characters, then restart my computer. Totally unacceptable. However, it smelled like a graphics problem…
Make the appropriate DirectX tweaks to the target line in the shortcut (right after the “-steam -game portal” [no quotes]). These are also mentioned above. I tried “-dxlevel 70″ (no quotes) which didn’t work (odd, because I had to switch to DX7 to run CoD2), but I then tried “-dxlevel 80″ (no quotes) and it worked like a champ.
The majority of the posts on here sound like they’re graphics related. This may be because you’re using a non-supported graphics chipset, but if you play around with the settings enough you’re bound to figure something out.
The big problem now is the bonus levels. Like others on here, my game also crashes after I complete the levels (not a blue screen of death error, just a “hl2.exe has encountered an error and must be..” error) – hopefully a fix is forthcoming!

I have the same intel chipset. Have someone tried to use 3d analyze to make portal work? it helped me in many games, i’m just downloading this game and relly want to play.
If u run Vista, you will have to run hl2.exe in Windows XP compatibility mode
hehe. it is something graphic related.
what I added was -steam -game portal -dxlevel 81 +mat_forcehardwaresync 0 -dev
and that worked wonders, adding -window could also help (opening it in a window)
the bonus levels took nearly no time to load. but when I fell to the “water” in one of the bonus levels. I got the flickering bluescreen
Okay, I guess maybe I should clarify…
With these Intel chipsets (mine at least), I can run HL2 until it starts to load the next part of the first level (in the containment area), then it crashes. Same with Portal – runs until I go near/through the first Portal.
None of these fixes work for these Intel chipsets. They seem to work on ATI and other brands just fine – probably because they are actually supported by Steam.
Ellimist: I have the same problem as you. I have an Intel 945GM and Portal crashes after I walk through the first portal into the next room. However, after much searching on the internet, I’ve found a way to get HL2 to work. Add the following to launch options:
+mat_forcehardwaresync 0 +mat_forcemanagedtextureintohardware 0
Worked perfectly for HL2, but still no luck with portal.
P.S. I bought a new video card for my desktop just to play this game, and it owns! Best game I’ve seen in quite a while.

Please help…I have tried to do everything that is every one of these post. The game crashes while I am in the “loading” screen. Here are my specs:

I have Vista 32 bit. Hated to mess with the install of Portal. Went through the whole file errors and the such. Copied the GameInfo.txt file to the hl2 directory. Used the fix(that just changes 428 to 405). Changed the Shortcut to Windows Xp Compatibility. Still no help. Then once shortcut target reads “…\portal\hl2.exe” -steam -game portal(Note where the “” are). Finally SUCCESS!!! And now that I went through all this poo I don’t even wanna play. In the first room, before you go through the first portal, on an intel chipset in the top right corner of the screen there is a statement saying “Server stuck on object 0/testchmb_a_00″ I don’t know if that will help anyone figure out what the problem is, or even if it’s normal for other graphics chip, but it exists. Also, the program doesn’t crash as you go through the portal, it crashes when you look to the left on the other side of the portal. Go through backwards and you’ll see what I mean.

the game starts up normally, gets to the main screen, and it opens up the chapters, but then when i click on start new game, it goes back to the main screen, any help?
i need help and i did exactly what u guys have stated above. i added the fix in, i created the shortcut and did what i was supposed to. but even with all that nothing starts up. i dont get a menu or anything. wats wrong? i also did wat psy said and turned my sound acc to none and tried and that didnt help.
I made it through the first level on an Intel chip by only looking at the floor. Unfortunately, it still crashed once I got in the elevator thingy.

To all of those running on an Intel chipset, I have added the following to the command line launch options and got it to some extent playable:
-dxlevel 80 +mat_forcehardwaresync 0 +mat_forcemanagedtextureintohardware 0 +snd_async_prefetch_priority 1 +mat_softwarelighting 1 +mat_max_worldmesh_verticies 1024 +mat_reducefillrate 1
I managed to get to level 16, however it BSOD’d twice at some points in the game. This is still the closest I’ve seen anyone get to being able to play it normally.

Your advice worked exactly as u said, however, mine BSOD’d within seconds of entering the next room via the very first portal. This was the first time I could see the portal (leave alone passing through it) without the game crashing.
I’m gonna try one more time to see if it lasts longer like u said, until level 16 or more.

Let it be known to those for whom the game crahes immediately after the first portal opens up, updating to the latest DirectX 9 does not help. You still gotta wait for someone like .asdf. to come up with advanced tweaks to ultimately play this wihtout any issues.
i am having problems with directx. whenever i start the game it says i need the minimum requirement of directx 8.0. so i went and downloaded directx 9.0 from the link above by paste and it still says i need directx 8.0. help plz
for the mountapp failed problems, change the steam emu file
the line MountCacheManual = 428
to MountCacheManual = 407
try something different if you get kicked out of the game 10 seconds after. I had the problem at 405, then I changed to 407 it worked….no idea why
Hi guys, I bet loads of you have been suffering with the same problem i had. You load portal and it crashes before you even get to the menu stating “hl2 has stopped working”, well after being extremely ****************** at valve and the fact the forums fixes didnt help, I finally got hold of a Fix from friend.
Go to your hl2 file in your portal folder and right click it and create a shortcut, then drag the shortcut to the desktop.
Right click the shortcut, and click properties. Then in target in should be locating the hl2 file,
example of mine:
“C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\(my-account)\portal\hl2.exe”
all you need to do is change the ending so it should look like this
“C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\(my-account)\portal\hl2.exe” -game portal -window -dxlevel 90+ +mat_forcehardwaresync 0
essential you just need to copy n paste this… -game portal -window -dxlevel 90+ +mat_forcehardwaresync 0 ..and add it to the end.
Then launch the shortcut, it will load in windowed mode, but you can put it back to fullscreen in options.
I hope it works for the rest of you, cause i been there, and portal has a wicked ending. so enjoy.
I figured out my error! problem by myself… sad:
when i unrared the main file, i simply copied over the ep2 folder to my games folder, completely missing all the massive files in the unl-ep2 folder. once i brought those over to their new home everything worked.

I did everything but it is not Portal I get, it is one of the Half-Life 2 things, (don’t know if it is the original game or one of the two episodes) and even that I can’t play it…

I just fixed the shortcut and now it works… almost.

@ RoEm: Right click the desktop shortcut and click ‘Properties’ > ‘General’ tab. At the bottom next to ‘Attributes’ untick the ‘Read-only’ box. Click ‘Apply’. You should now be able to add the parameters -steam -game portal
@ Tosheros: Before starting a new game, launch Portal and go to ‘Options’ > ‘Portal’ tab and set the ‘Portal render depth’ to ‘0′. You will not be able to see through the Portals with this setting but perhaps it will stop your crashes. Good luck.
To anyone that may try adding the ‘-dxlevel 90′ parameter as suggested above, this can severly cripple your game if you do not meet requirements for this. If you have experienced problems after adding this parameter, simply change it to ‘-dxlevel 80′ (without quotes) and click apply.

OK never mind again! *sigh* The Read-only portion is unchecked but everytime I try to add that -steam -game portal to the end of it it keeps telling me “the name specified in the target box is not valid” what can I do?! Am I doomed?!

nevermind got that part… now… crashes after entering first portal. set dx level to 8 and 9, does nothing tried all graphics options and portal render depth to 0 and still it crashes. All internets awarded to he who finds out what the hell to do.

You guys i’ve been looking for the solution of my problems to play Portal for a WEEK, i’ve downloaded several times the whole torrent with 24 zipped files and i’ve had MountAppSystem Failed error over and over again.
I’ve already have:
-Made the Shortcut properly
-Changed the MountCacheManual number
-Downloaded the Steamemu.ini fix about three times. None changed the error.
-Made a C:\Portal folder with the folder of the .rar with no numbers inside C:\Portal\portal
-Downloaded the newest DirectX
-Left the .gcf files in the Portal-Unleashed torrent folder
Still i don’t know what to do to handle this error…help pls?

For anyone who has TWOY’s problem (I did, and this worked. It turns out vista has a broken .dll 1/2 the time and this fixes it so portal and tf2 will stop crashing.)

If using the Intel onboard chip adding THIS to your Portal command line will make the game work. sadly every time the cameras shine a red laser or Glados speaks it crashes the pc. Looking down will avoid the laser crash, sadly i cant work out how to disable audio.

when i run the exe it works (thanks for that btw, had that mount error first as well) but then i get the intro scene, i get the starting menu, i click on new game, and nothing happens, just, nothing at all. i think it has something to do with those gcf files or the fact i have to rename that shortcut cause when i add -steam -game portal it says it cant find it or something, really dunno whats goin on …
