Porn industry supports Blu-ray format
A major porn movie studio today announced that it will be releasing its first Blu-ray title on January 4. “Pirates”, says director by company founder Joone, will be the largest epic in the history of adult films. About one year ago, it seems, the porn industry had decided to go with HD DVD in the high-definition age. An industry that tends to be always on the forefront of video technology, had selected the Toshiba-developed technology as its favored format, mostly due to the high production cost of Blu-ray movies. Some producers back then also complained that there was virtually no support provided by the Blu-ray camp to the porn industry.
Now it appears that this situation is changing, even if this change may still be in its infancy. The 129-minute long “Pirates” will be the first adult movie to be released on Blu-ray in early January and the reasons for that move may not be surprising, if you have been following the market development surrounding HD. Director Joone told CEPro that consumers asking for adult films that can be played on their Playstation 3 have had a major impact on the studio’s decision. While the Playstation 3 is still trailing the other two game consoles, it may very well become a decisive force to move the porn industry closer to Blu-ray – due to the fact that, because of the PS3, there are millions of Blu-ray players in the market right now, compared to hundreds of thousands of HD DVD players. Is the porn going to decide the HDDVD vs Blu-ray war? I wouldn’t wonder…

Yeah that’s right emjay. although I think it was the developers of Beta who shot themselves in the foot by not allowing porn on their format. Personally I think Sony won when they came up with the name Blu Ray It’s much easier to say then HDDVD.

So true. I also stream everything from my computer. I don’t think I’ve watched actually television in over a month. There’s no need to, when you have the internet, and can just download anything and everything.

Hardly anybody is going to care at all on which format porn-o will take next. I’m guessing that more than 50% of us don’t last more than 15 minutes through a porn-o without jacking off first. The only ones who care about this are our senior citizens.

I haven’t bought a DVD in over 3 years and the only time I go to the theaters is when a friend wants to go (but if I can get the movie from the ‘net in DVD quality and my friends know it, we end up watching it on a flat-panel TV). Optical media *is* dead. Also the urgency to watch a movie in theaters as soon as it comes out is dying. If we know it’s gonna come out in DVD in a couple of months (and DVDRips much sooner than that) we can wait.
As for porn, it’s everywhere. Who pays for it?
I hope HDDVD and BluRay both fail. All companies have taken the move to the digital age just to make massive amounts of money. Do you really think a DVD is worth over $20? Or a high-def disc over $30? Hell, I’ve even stopped buying blank discs. External hard drives are the way to go now. And half the time I don’t why I bother backing up some of the stuff I download. How many people have the time to go back and re-watch a movie over and over. There’s just so much stuff out there. And I don’t mean just movies & music. Content overload, man. I’m going to read a few books these coming months, f*uck that. Forget the MPAA & RIAA.

Heh - it’s just like the whole ‘next gen console’ argument, but with porn instead.
Xbox & PS3 lost out to the Wii, cos the Wii did something completely different for this gen console, while M$ & $ony just did the same old same old, but with better graphics.
HDDVD/Blu-Ray porn is basically the same old same old, but with better graphics, but all that is really needed to give the porn industry a boost is something new, like 3D holographic porn, or interactive porn. Now that would be a moneyspinner!

Sony design goals were prevent access to digital data. That is why they required same chip physical decoding hardware, etc.

This is true for about 1% of the population. The other 99%, not so much.
Pirates is NOT the first BlueRay. There are already a few Blueray titles out. I know because I work in a porn shop and we have probably 3 or 4 Blueray movies out. Of course we have many more HDDVD, but still, the story is wrong, Pirates isn’t the first BR.
Oh, and what makes Hi-Def porn valueable (as well as mainstream movies in Hi-Def) is that they will look good on your big screen TV’s. Have you watched a DVD on a 52″ 1080p LCD? Even with upconverting it doesn’t look as good as a native 1080 video will look. It’s not just all about the fine details (though you get that with the HD), but it’s about filling a very large display and not having to see blocky video.

… say whatever you will about the porn industry, but generally speaking, they will invest money in what they believe to be the next format for them, for example, i’ve said it before and i’ll say it again ….. when DVD was being rammed down our throats as the must have right away format, all the features were being branded around as great for the end user, we’d get all these extras with our films, we’d be able to watch the movies from different camera angles, so it we’d never get bored of watching films from our shiny new disc…..
well i call b0ll0x, what did we get in the end ?… 3 different releases of each movie (at least) no sooner had you bought new films than “new” versions were out labelled as “directors cut” or “extended” or “unrated” … blah blah, and following that we get the 2 disc sets with all those promised extras in the first place….
and at the end of the day, which industry is it that actually put their money into encoding films for user selectable camera views ?…. yup PORN…. so warner brothers and universal, i say stfu, and put your money where your mouth is and quit whining
