Poll Results: Where do you Download from?

Here are the results for the 2nd poll we have hosted here on rlslog. We decided to make this poll a two weeker because we wanted to see if it affected the scores in any major way and although the overall winner did not change, everything shifted about quite a bit in the 2nd week. Anyway as can been seen by the pic on the left the question was “Where do you download Scene releases from?” and the overall winner was Public Torrent Sites closely followed by Private Torrent Sites and HTTP. Usenet comes in a distant 4th. These 4 grabbed most of the votes. Nothing to surprising here.

Scene FTP Sites come in 5th which is a little out of the blue, didn’t realise we had a good few sceners visiting. Hehe ;) . IRC and non Scene FTP’s are the least utilised, with only a handful votes each. We collected 10905 votes, which is pretty decent. Thanks to everyone who voted!

We have a new Poll up now cleverly titled “How old are you?” please vote, it only takes 5 seconds!

If you have any suggestions for poll questions you would like to see don’t hesitate to write us a little comment. Also don’t forget to drop by our IRC channel for chat and a laugh :) . Cheers.

    Whats the deal with this 1st ,2nd stuff when replying to a post.
    If someone going to be first then at least make yourself a respectable post and be the first to post the most interesting constructive reply.
    I see it so much and so much space is wasted with this child like replys.

    That was a good poll its always good too see where ppl are getting their releases from,im not usually into polls but on this site since i like it i did vote for the release poll and the age poll.

    Altough the poll is interesting, you should be careful with drawing conclusions. Other then that people can lie, the poll was somewhat limited. Me for example, try to get releases from usenet, because it’s fast, but the releases that are available are limited, so some come from public torrent sites.
    I would guess the same counts for people using other methods.

    You SHOULD have asked something like, “What is your preferred method… ” or “Where do you get most of your scene releases from?”.

  5. December 3rd, 2007 | 01:53

    @ a

    I believe it is.

    Poll is just for fun, were not using it for serious research or anything. :)

    Rapidshare and not looking back……

    Quit whining and spend $10 and get a 6 gig game the same day.

    The first month I paid for premium I got 73 full albums.

    Money well spent for the speed of download.

    A 2 cd dvd rip takes 45 minutes to 1 hour for me with no seeding issues like stuck at 93% for two weeks.

    Everyone I know that has been busted by the RIAA has been hosting files they forgot to move out of their shared folder.

    Im not a spokesperson for paying for something that is meant to be free but its a small price to pay for peice of mind and ease of use.

    Since iNCQRiT has brought up some good comments i would like too add.

    I did vote but only voted for one,but i would like to of voted for i would say 4 of the options,it was hard for me to pinpoint just 1 source that i download from.
    But as it is i picked the last source that i downloaded from before i saw the poll.

    too add to #4,

    in my opinion they also forget an “other” option. since i get my stuff from none of the in the poll mentioned channels.

    still kinda nice to see what the mpaa and riaa will most likely focus on next… and amazed at how many people pay (rpidshare) for their downloads to the wrong people!

    I check torrentleech for new releases, but only use that when I really want something quick, other than that it’s public torrents for me. I try not to use Newtorrents, since they add the moviex tracker which only lets you upload but not download without affecting ratio at their site. Isohunt or mininova are pretty good.

    @ olaf
    You’ll find that the majority of the English speaking world does not spell words like you. You will find that the majority of the English speaking world will spell words with an S when you think it is a Z. The majority of the English speaking world will consider your spelling to be 100% wrong. The reason being is that you speak american english and the rest of the world speaks proper English, probably British English or a derivative of it.

  28. IDIOT
    December 3rd, 2007 | 03:31

    Due to the international nature of the Internet a spelling mistake where you live is not where someone else lives and due the Americans uncanny ability to change, warp and basically destroy the English language (among other things) i would have to say that your an IDIOT. Please pick up an Oxford English dictionary, that should set you on your way to learning the correct spelling. If your going to pick Shiny up for a spelling mistake at least make sure your right, which I’m afraid to say your not. Now i would say something here like. Please learn proper English like you did Olaf. But i wont.

    Nice poll, but only being able to vote for one method gives a warped image (like #4 mentioned before). I had to choose one of my two favored methods, so your poll is already incorrect. The first poll had the same fault, the current poll doesn’t because you can only have one answer. On the other hand it’s unclear. What is the exact difference between a “Young Adult” and an “Adult”? You really should specify these things!

    “Poll is just for fun, were not using it for serious research or anything.”

    Then you shouldn’t distill conclusions out of it. I think people like Martin will use some of the information to improve rlslog (or add even more annoying advertisements), so you should put at least a little more thinking into these thing. Or maybe you should let an academic make them. There’s bound to be one in the rlslog staff (probably NOT mr. X).

    @21 fayek,

    A scene FTP site is a site run by or used by people in “the scene”. A non-scene FTP site is one that isn’t. “The scene” is what us non-scene people (also known as “lamers”) call the collection of pirates, crackers and others who create all these releases that this site writes about. In my experience, most scene members are fairly elitist and often arrogant. They usually consider anyone who isn’t in the scene to be beneath them. It’s kind of like that old saying about money; “If you have to ask…”

    @37 tucker,

    Usenet, also called newsgroups, is one of the oldest parts of the net. It was originally designed to carry only text messages, but people now use it for posting files as well.

    Pros:
    Fast
    Virtually 100% anonymous for downloading
    Huge selection

    Cons:
    May not be free
    Slightly more work than P2P/RS

    Read the following sites;

    Guys

    How old are you?

    * Child
    * Teenager
    * Young Adult
    * Adult
    * In Midlife Crisis!?
    * Senior

    Bad bad bad bad - you can NEVER put it that way, you have to put it in age groups, else you end up with a useless chart. What i mean is: We all have an oppenion about what age an adult is, etc.. So you need age-groups on it. Else you can’t conclude on it.

    I still get most from DC(++), as my ISP is utilizing an intranet/dmz with traffic limits on external traffic, but not on internal. Therefore using DC to set up internal hubs, only accepting IP series from within the so called ‘dmz’ makes it possible for me to keep a monthly dowload/upload at ~500GB(+) instead of just 24GB.

  44. anonymous
    December 3rd, 2007 | 12:53

    @42: Scene ppl are not elitist because we think we’re better than other. Its just that p2p/torrent people think they can get everything for free. Scene people know that it takes contribution, support and time to get stuff. Why should we let people freeload on our work, i know that its stealing and we get it free aswell, but who says you should get our time and skill for free?

    @43:anonymous

    i thought the main reason for p2p was to get things for free… maybe i was wrong… then again, i’m not, independently of the reason behind it, the scene exists because there are people who want to download something and use it/play it/whatever for free, just because there are a restrict group of people that knows how to make those cracks/workarounds/whatever does give them a reason to think they should get payed for it with money/whatever… i guess the only thing they actually deserve is respect… but to get respect you should respect first…

    sure it takes time/contribution/whatever but if they want to work for themselves let them, there will always be good people doing the same thing for the public for free…

  51. Sc3n3
    December 3rd, 2007 | 16:35

    I think the people who should respect are the “scene” players, who upload to P2P. They are the real people who give to the community.

    Not the groups, who I like of course, or we would have nothing at all.

    Why ? Well these groups would have loads of great things,and nobody to share with (they all seem to hate each other for a start) but its all ego, and they want the thanks, but make up some sh1t about hating P2P. If it was not for P2P or Newsgroups. Nobody would be any wiser.

    So they need us, as much as we need them.
