PlayStation 3 firmware upgrade 2.6: details
It may not be what many gamers are clamoring for, but Sony has got a slew of media-management tweaks in store for the PlayStation 3. By way of its PlayStation Blog, Sony today detailed what gamers can expect out of firmware update v2.60, which it expects to roll out in the near future. Foremost among the features included with v2.60 is the new Photo Gallery tool. With it, PS3 gamers will be afforded a streamlined process for sorting and displaying their digital photos. Planned features thus far announced include the ability to organize pictures within a variety of different parameters, to create slideshows accompanied by music, and to create photo playlists.
Firmware update v2.60 will also allow PS3 owners who have not signed up for the PlayStation Network to browse the online store. It will also add support for the DivX 3.11 video compression format. Sony did not reveal when the PS3’s firmware update v2.60 would be available. Along with detailing tweaks in store for the PS3, Sony mentioned today that the PSP is due for a minor firmware update. Specifics of the tweak, dubbed v5.03, were not revealed. Sony did say that the update is designed to improve system software stability during the use of certain PSP features. No date was issued for when gamers can expect to pick up the update, though Sony did say that it is expected to arrive “soon.”

Bah, still no MKV support or NTFS HD read ability.
This device is 90% a great media player, I just wish it was easier to play HD files.
Yeah, im buying ps3 only if they add mkv/divx7 support… the games on it are still not good enough
The only thing I would like is continuous playback for streaming videos, one after the other. Stupid Sony
@1&2 – there was a software program that allows you to stream mkv's although it would be good for the ps3 to do that on its own
@3 – you've been able to do that for a while now. Go to video settings and turn on 'sequential playback'
@1 and @2
you can install linux with vlc player on the ps3 to play hd files and much more
@3…tool
this version is out now
just swictch ma PS3 on and i have to download it.
it good to mess wid for 10min
wish i never brought this beta console
and more crappy updates with icons telling us what we already was playing movie files great lol
wot next tell us we can install linux if we want SONY sucks end of / apart from there tv's i love mine lol
Or use TVersity to stream mkv files to ps3 from pc.
Or use tsmuxer to remux mkv to .m2ts takes less than a minute. x264 with 5.1 strait of the HD, beautifull.
LOL @ people who say "I only buy it when it can play HD videos"
How about learning how to connect your computer to your TV?
"How about learning how to connect your computer to your TV?"
Probably because you need a honking system to decode 1080p, but then again only someone talking from their head, not their ass, would know what.
The ps3 supports almost every format a stand alone divx player does. Nope, doesn't play mkv. But if you use mkv2vob in 30 seconds you have a nice VOB file, HD intact, with DTS or 5.1 (whatever the case may be) that your ps3 will play flawlessly.
I'm just blown away at the people saying stupid stuff like I won't buy it til it supports continuous playback. Umm, it has, and i think that update was early last year!
Ps3 + tveristy means you can play all scene standard releases and HD releases on your ps3, no questions asked. Anything outside of that is jackasses not following scene standards, or you are an idiot.
Great update. However, for some reason when I booted up my PS3 to update my system the entire Video & Audio settings were gone, and had to reset it the way it was. Very odd… i wonder how this could have happened.
OMFG I can't beleive I didn't know that, cheers Ken Adams, yes thank you MattyG I am a tool.
Sony sucks so hard…include the ability to play backups to sell more.
btw therz a hack to play PS2 iso's on the PS3, only on Japanese 60GB PS3 though
A PAL version is said to follow. It requires SWAP magic to load the elf file.
am i the only one who brought this consol to play games…:/
I just use demuxer to play all the 720p stuff on my ps3 o.0. http://www.videohelp.com/tools/MKVExtractGUI
it takes 1-10 mins depending of length of show and the quality is well o.0. HD.
yes since PS3 is DivX certified and definitely enough power, sony should add all new features of divx 7 !! MKV rox^^
by the way, a popcorn hour A100 can be found easily for $100 now, that will play even 1080p MKV from network (NFS, samba) with external/internal subs, and support for ogg vorbis in MKV files, a great thing for anime fans.
Let's face it even if ps3 adds MKV, the support for subs or network streaming will never be as good as on PCH
I'll buy it if and only if they support mkv.
Stupid sony!
@ 12
honking system? You can buy an 8600GT for under $75 and it will play anything you throw at it. My old pentium 4 had one and it could play everything.
it's already out and i've already installed it . no obvous updates apart from simpler photo organising. slightly off topic, but were the hell is Super Streetfighter 2 turbo HD remix for PS3? been waiting for weeks now !!! it's fine being to able to browse the ps3 store, only to be disappointed every thursday as it's still not there !
How about support for external subtitle files?
Hate to always have to use AVIAddSub
is it better then halo 3?
eh where be the xbox fanboys its a topic on ps3 why is there not a flamewar going on, bah stupid flameboys being at school
Divx 3.11!!! so DivX 7 on ps4 it is then
DO you own a ps3 now martin this is the first time i actualy see you posting some news about the ps3
I Still like XBox 360 better, has better graphics then PS3 or PC, and can play more media files and easier than PS3 or PC too.
For now Xbox media is still best around, no contest.
This is a great app to strem all kind of files to the PS3,
also subs!

@17 Nope. It does seems to be just the two of us though….
PS3 media server allows you to stream HD MKV files without having to process the files. Also, there's no need to schedule or manually update the index as it reads your shared folders live
Tversity still sucks in this respect.
@28: can i borrow the crack your smoking please? the 360 has better graphics than a ps3?
@28
…errrm the 360 plays more media files than the PC?
..ok!?!!??
A) no it dosen`!
B) isnt the xbox just a pc anyways, really?
@ 28
It clearly does, maybe you better see a doctor and get your eyes checked out. It plays at higher settings and resolution than PC or PS3. dipsh!t.
oops i meant for the 1d1ot @ 32
any chance to fsaa?

youre an idiot xbox360 can never have better graphics than a pc as like for ps3 all games are created on pc not the consoles they run on & a pc is most versitile for games & media
dumb post. i had the update downloaded (2 hours!!!!) and installed before this post was up.
2.60 became available soon after 12am GMT. Downloaded and installed in under 12 minutes.
@ 28
You are a tw@. A 360 has better graphics than a PC? The 360's Xenos chip (R500) is almost an ATI 512MB X1800 (R520).
As for it being better than the PS3, that is in the hands of the developer. The best graphically the 360 has to offer is Gears 2 whilst the PS3 has Killzone 2 (coming out next month). If you want to ignore KZ2 (because it's not out yet) then it would be MGS4.
Look at Square Enix: The characters in Star Ocean 4 look wooden and generally rubbish when you compare it to Final Fantasy XIII (just check out the faces and movement of the hair). I won't even go on to Versus XIII which looks even better than those two.

I love my consoles as much as the next man, But a PC with a new graphics card such as the nv280 will have better graphics then the xbox360 since… well.. Its a better graphics chip then they chucked into the 360 all those years ago
.
playstation is doing all this firmwire system update but what they need to do is fix the ps3 home i am still having trouble with my logging in to ps3 home all my internet service is working perfect both wireless and wired
Something as simple as continuous playback of DVDs would even be nice…
@ 42
How can you have continuous playback of DVD's when the PS3 can only hold one DVD at a time?
PS3mediaserver FTW! Much, much better than TVersity as you can use TSMuxer to simply change the container to a transport stream that PS3 recognizes/plays. No need to transcode it into MPEG and suffer the buffer lag and quality loss!
I, too, long for the day when PS3 natively supports MKV files…or really anything over 4GB. That said, it's a wise move on their part because BD sales would likely dip if this became too easy
It already supports files over 4Gbs
btw, go to megashares.com and search- "PS3" for some of my PS3 encoded HD videos .
SSF2 turbo Hd remix has been out, where are you from
@17
No I play games too
I wish you could burn PS1 games that you own onto the system and then transfer to my psp so i can play on the go
@28
Really? NOT!!!….Pass that pipe, bro! LOL
Maybe if everyone, including me, badger Sony about adding MKV, & Divx 7 support we might get an update…say around Summertime?
I cannot play 2HD releases on my PS3 after the upgrade.
