PlayStation 3 doubled sales thanks to price cut
Over 100,000 PS3 consoles were sold in the US last week, thanks largely to the introduction of a lower-priced $400 version. Sony CEO Howard Stringer told the Associated Press that number was significantly greater than most weekly sales for the system, which is falling in competition against the Wii and Xbox 360. The price of the current PS3, which has an 80 GB hard drive, was cut by $100 two weeks ago to bring it down to around $500. That caused weekly sales to be around 75,000 units. Then, last week Sony launched a 40 GB version of the console, causing another spike in sales. “It’s the breakthrough we’ve been anticipating. We’ve been holding our breath,” said Stringer.
Previously, the PS3 was selling around 30,000 - 40,000 units per week. According to NPD Group, the entire month of September only saw 119,000 PS3 units sold. Last week alone almost defeats that number. Sony has struggled to find a winning version of the PS3. It originally launched a 20 GB and 60 GB version, both of which have since been discontinued. It is now selling the 40 GB and 80 GB models, but both of these have scrapped the PS2 Emotion Engine, making backwards compatibility much more limited. In other news, Nintendo Wii remains the most selled console with 519,000 Wii players, a gain of 36 percent from September, followed by 366,000 Xbox 360 players and 121,000 of Sony’s PlayStation 3 consoles

PS3 is a great system and so is Wii and the 360.
The future is looking better and better for the PS3. I haven’t gotten a “next-gen” console yet but I’m probably going to get a PS3 and then a Wii a while later. I won’t touch M$’s XBAAAAWKS.

well.. fanboy or not, there just isn’t nearly enough good exclusives for the PS3 that would make me buy that overpriced piece of garbage.
In fact, I can’t name 1 single game exclusive to the PS3 that would make me get one.
Got both 360/ps3 and so far the ps3 aint living up to it’s reputation.

PS3 is alright, although a good PC + 8800GTX = lot more fun.
a pc with a good graphics and video card is more fun. I’ll eventually hunt down a 20 gig or 40 gig PS3 though.
PS3 reasons for me: Metal Gear Solid 4, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Silent Hill V, GT 5, GTA 4 (the best version on Blu-Ray). Only just for these titles PS3 is worth it.
I have a decent PeeCee so I don’t want to spend money on a console.
I will get a PS3 in 2 years time or something.

Wii
- Novelty value has worn off. People are already complaining about the lack of NEW games. Games manufacturers are stressing that people don’t want the usual complex games that have already eaten up large budgets.
Xbox360
- Noisy - and that’s when it’s not overheating and needs to be sent back to MS. Can’t fault the range of games though and the online play is world class.
PS3
- Horribly overpriced and distinct lack of A-class games. Also developers have a new system to learn. But way more potential than the ageing X360.
As for the 40Gig PS3 losing backwards compatibility - who cares? Honestly? If you’ve got PS2 games then you’ve, by definition, got a PS2. Duh. How are those Xbox original games working out for you on the X360?
All 3 systems have their merits and flaws - and any serious gamer would have them all.

Yes, man, I feel you on that “If you’ve got PS2 games then
you’ve, by definition, got a PS2.” but there is a lot of people
out there that would prefer to sell their old system and use
that money to help cover the expense.
And a lot of nice games for PS2 are now at reduced price, in
case you never played them.
It *might* be a useless feature for many, but you can’t just
ignore the library of games of the insanely popular PS2.
Mike (post 21): you are right on there man, all of it except i sorrta could make a case that at least at the launch of the PS3 it wasnt over priced in many aspects. Its a much ‘better’ machine than the 360 and had the blueray drive, also came with wireless, etc etc. but as far as how much a blueray drive is worth is very debatable lol.
Damn wii didnt even have a network plug.. pretty lame. cheap motherboard have 1 or 2 most the time..
I am by far not a 360 fanboy… but at the moment if i had to choose 1 system that would be it, even can ‘mod’ the firmware on it and…. the Wii just sits there and collects dust, not even a game personally i would bother getting for it that i have seen.. the PS3 well its getting better i think as far as games, i wish i would have waited to get one until there was more titles out there.
But saying that I already had to send my 360 back for the blinking red ring light of death once. PS3 has so much more potential if they use it, right now they are not.

Having said that, I WILL very seriously consider getting a PS3 when GT5 is finally released
have 2 360s one one the way to germany for RROD replacement. But still nothing beats playing PGR4, Halo3, Ace combat6, Bioshock, Gears etc and upcoming Mass effect. Well so many AAA titles on 360 why would anyone want to go for overpriced BD player which plays some games? Anyway, holiday 2008 would be time to pick up cheap BD player known as PS3.
I’m one of the people who got pushed over the line of doubt by the 40GB model and a discount on top of it from a store here.
I bought Heavenly Sword with it, which is cool, but too easy and too short. After the first round you unlock Hell Mode which is basically how the game should have been in the first place. Games are too easy these days.
Looking forward to Burnout Paradise, Soul Calibur IV, MGS4, FFXIII, Little Big Planet. That last title has more innovation and next gen than Wii could ever come up with.
Cant wait till God of War 3 comes out! MGS4 and the new Socom too. Has anyone played Warhawk? That game is sick! Seriously the most fun ive ever had on a multiplayer game.

I got a xbox (not 360), a ps2 (dreaded v12 too) and a Wii. No plans on ever buying a POS3.
ps3 will soon be the market leader, i just love these fanbots squirm, so stupid and uninformed oh well i am looking forward to trying the new divx/xvid feature

It takes time for a new console to build a game library. PS3 is only in its early days like the $box$360 was last year. Back then people were complaining about how the 360 didn’t have a lot of good games; now that it does its gaining popularity. Give PS3 another 6-8 months and you’ll find that the Sony vs Micro$oft wars will start up again.

I’ll take a wii over PS3 anyday. It actually LOOKS fun. I was a big fan of Playstation but with the crap that went down for PS3 and seeing the 360’s graphics/cost I would buy a 360 over a PS3.

Yes atm 360 graphics and processing power maybe the comparatively the same as PS3.
However its new, over time PS3 will own the xbox 360 in processing and graphics power wise. When developers become more used to PS3 programming and take full advantage of the hardware.
When you look back at all consoles, PS1 Ps2, the earlier games kinda sucked ass in terms of graphics, where as the later games towards the end of life on those consoles looked hella nice.
In terms of processing power Xbox 360 is basically just a computer, where as PS3 in terms of processing is like 5 or more times faster than a PC. As displayed with their optimized Folding@home PS3 program.
There was a really interesting project done awhile back, Real-time Raytracing (the most expensive in terms of processing in graphical terms)
they used 18 PS3’s inter-connected and used their processing power to do real time raytracing showing the industry that it is ACTUALLY possible to do real time raytracing if there was enough processor power.
Haha why didnt they use Xbox 360’s???? wouldnt it be alot cheaper to just get 18 Xbox360?????

Yeah, at this point though, the PS3 is so far behind the compition if they don’t get any major jump in sales in the next year, I’d say they’re completely out of the race. I am a Wii fan, I have one, I love old-school games most though. As for 360, it’s a great system as well, but I just don’t have the money…
Also, Wii’s already outsold the 360, which has been out for a full year longer!

already got a ps3.. the gr8 thing is tat i thought i was gonna miss the backwards compatability but i traded my 60gig in and got a 80gig… but i dont cuz i realised most of the games wer chipped onez… and terfore i couldnt play ten on ta ps3 anyway…. whhoooo lol…
I’m just buying a PS2 with tons of games for $100. Plus most games are $20! WooHoo! I use my PC for NextGen. Alot cheaper
In about 5 years I’ll buy $100 PS3 with tons of games while you all are buying your $1000 PS4.
