PlayStation 2: most played console
Research groups tell us a lot of interesting things, and Nielsen has begun the new year with some unexpected news from 2008. With other reports fussing over the three “next-gen” consoles, who would have thought that Sony’s PlayStation 2 would win the popularity contest? Based on data gathered between January and October 2008, Nielsen has determined that 31.7 percent of the American gamer pool was comprised of PS2 users. The Xbox 360 comes in second with 17.2 percent, followed by the Wii at 13.4 percent.
Furthermore, the research data showed the original Xbox hanging on at 9.7 percent, as the PlayStation 3 sits at 7.3 percent. Nintendo’s GameCube falls below that at 4.6 percent, leaving 16.2 percent in the “Other” category, which consists of “any other console found in the home.” This doesn’t include portable platforms on the DS or PSP. Even more impressive data from Nielsen is the fact that World of Warcraft (WoW) users average 671 minutes (over 11 hours) per week! In any given minute, “almost 1 percent (0.723 percent) of all PC gamers are playing WoW.”

WOHOOOOOOOO PS2 FTW!!!
Years ago I won a PS2 at a rave in Dayton. It served me very well for years and seemed to be a bit of a good luck charm… Two days after I disassembled it for painting and mod-chipping, crackheads broke into our apartment and stole all of my roomies DVDs and her PS2. Mine being in about 30 pieces on shelf was ignored as were my DVDs sitting right behind it. A few months later I put my now red PS2 back together and it worked years to come until the lazer burned up.
most pirated console
wasnt the DC most pirated console?
So the PS2 has a much bigger installed base? z0mg, who'da thunk it?
More startling revelations from the Department of Obvious Cr.ap:
- Mario's the most recognized VG character!!!1
- The American gamer pool (lulz, more like the United Statesian pool only) is comprised at 31.7% by PS2 users, but it's also comprised by PC users at 97% too!!
- Wii is for kids.
More to come as sh.it develops.
I gotta say that I have a 360 but even now I still play guitar hero on ps2 since they cost less, and I don't go on xbox live.
Add to that some still great tittes being released, Persona FES, Persona 4, Yakuza 2, it's still a great console, the only downside is you really need to play it on a non HDTV to get the graphical benefit..
The only reason for the PS2's success was hype from the PS1 and the fact that DVD became the most succesful entertainment product ever. Purely as a console, the innovative DreamCast owned it all the way. As usual, SEGA was way ahead of its time and this was not appreciated by the dumbass consumer.
if now sega have put a dvd reader and software into the dreamcast they would have killed of sonys ps2.
PSX or PS1 was effing huge… when I first got PS1 it opened a whole new world for me in console gaming… incredibly large gamebase with more mature games, good graphics at the time and absollytely THE BEST controller ever made + it was so simple to play backup discs xD…
On topic: PS2 let me kinda down, after that and xbox I quit console gaming all together.
Games today suck and no system can save them.
PS2 rulez!
I still use my PS2 exclusively, I enjoy it much better than ps3 or 360 because it has better games. and I enjoy it more than PC because it has better graphics and doesn't stutter or need keyboard+mouse like PC games. for $100 PS2 Wins in all these areas hands down.
Now then lets turn to the world to find out the the WII is the most sold console but it`s tipical to see the US not catch on to innovation yet.
I have some friends who own a PS2 and they are relativelly happy with that because:
- They are not hardcore players
- They don't need to buy a new HDTV
- Can play backups (pir4ted) without problems
- They just use the system to play party games (buzz, pes) while drinking beers with friends
So, if you just need that, why spent some money on a new system?
Well, we can see the success of xbox 360 these days, in two years I frankly beleave that this system will outmatch the success of PSX
happy new year/console
what… PS2
wow…. i can't believe it…
Well I kinda knew it! PS2 is a console with a soul L
L
(something that's definitely missing in those so called next-gen consoles). Proud owner of 2 of them, "iBoney & Every" thats what I named them. Just get 8 controllers & you can have a killr party! They'll rock for 5-6 more years, I'm pretty sure of that.
i personally know a lot more people who play original xbox over the ps2 these days but in any event .. im just happy that the ps3 is getting dumped on w/ an open mouth
PS2 FTW!!!
i love my PS2!!
Up yours next gen consoles
Write any thread about consoles and out come the fanboy's lol it's always a riot to read. All the consoles have their merits, all of them are fun to play for different reasons depending on what type of game you want to play. The best bet is just to buy them all if you can afford it and then you can tell everyone to shut up because you have first hand experience and your not just another simpering whining fanboy.
I would have expected people posting on a website about "releases" to be purchasing every console with the money they save on games. I know I do, and I gotta say, my 360 gets the most spin. I like playing first-person shooters online though, so of course I'm going to lean toward it. Then again, I suppose I could always play them on PC if I could ever stop grabbing things with Newsleecher…
@19 ncx
that's so NOT true!
"The best bet is just to buy them all if you can afford it and then you can tell everyone to shut up because you have first hand experience" L M A
You don't have to buy all the consoles yourself to have 1st hand exp.
What friends are for? Got any? Ever heard of a concept called sharing?
people dont stress..
it's simple, PS2 is the cheapest console.. thats why it is the most played console =)
Average American consumers wait WAY too long to let go of their beloved electronics… Not always bad if you're really enjoying them still, of course, but because of this US manufacturers HAVE to support legacy products much longer than they want to and should… And that's why the PS2 is still used so much (plus the fact it and the original Xbox are the most pirate-friendly consoles of all time).
Everything now is much better than a PS2, even the PSP with technically inferior hardware. Ppl that say it's better than all the other consoles are probably still using VHS and will need a converter box on Feb… Get with the times and see what you've been missing out. Oh, and by the way, my vote for the best consoles goes to the Xbox 360 and the PC (yeah)…
PS2 + Pro Evo = Not enough hours in the day I tell thee! Absoulute class!
I think when I purchase a HDTV I'll be getting the PS3 then, but getting one now whilst I cant justify it on my regular TV, seems a bit pointless as I want the full PS3 experience, BluRay and all.
HDTV first, then PS3.
Peas out, Happy New Year everybody.
I gave my ps2 to my bro for Christmas and the only reason I did that was so i can get a new one.
PS2 will always be #1 for exploit
My first console was a SNES, it was far out. I even had the bazooka and gun to play duckhunt. Over at my best friend they had a Sega 16bit megadrive, which was pretty neat as well. Then came the big fat darkgrey playstation. Totally new experience with Coolboarders, Carmageddon and Gran Turismo as my favourite games. My brother took it when I got my own crib and started living on my own. Untill like a month ago I hadn't been playing or owning any consoles for a long time. But one local store had a stockload of brand new PS2 Slim's for 69,- EUR. I couldn't resist and bought the thing. I love to play racegames like Need for Speed (underground+pro street) or Gran Turismo in Rally mode. For now my only wish is Pro Evo Soccer to go with that. Then I need to get my hands on a MEMOR32 to play downloaded games. I don't want to open my case and modchip it.
I think it's good value for the money unlike it's follow-up: the PS3. Sure it has the best features of all consoles, but beside the fact that it looks hideous it is also way to pricey! The Wii is ideal for the people who weren't ever gaming before. It's innovative and fun, but the specs, (childish) games and cartoony looking graphics will sure keep the diehard gamer away from it. You could in fact just settle right in between there somewhere and get a Xbox 360, which is like the PS2 good value for the money, but then in a kinda nextgen way. It is not the console itself which makes the fun. You can have as much fun on a SNES as you could have with a PS3. Everybody has another taste. You just pick one that fit yours and go along with that. I for instant will stick to my PS2 for the time and totally hate the Nintendo DS (ok, it's not a console), while btw the Wii is pretty cool (atleast tennis and mariokart).
This is stupid, I have every console known to man (almost). The one I play the most is SNES, it has nothing to do whit the consoles and it's all about the games. The big guys like sony and micro only want games to be made fast, thats why everything is Doom with the walls in a different color. Now Nintendo has lost it's mind and SEGA is dead. Games these days are all hype and no game, ps2 still have a bunch of good games cuz they had to compete with Nintendo and SEGA with psxso they kept it up for a while. ps3 and 360 is just about who can sell the most commercials online.
Long Live PS2!!!!!!!
SNES owns all.
