Pirated version of Simpsons tracked to Australia

The first known pirated copy of “The Simpsons Movie” uploaded on the Internet was tracked to a home raided by Australian police Friday, a film industry group said. An international operation involving the movie’s owner Fox, Australian police, and the private investigation group Australian Federation Against Copyright Theft resulted in the copy’s removal from the Internet, the Motion Picture Association said in a statement. Police ordered a 21-year-old man in Sydney suspected of having uploaded the movie to appear in a Sydney court in October when he will be formally charged, the Australian Federal Police said in a statement. Details of the likely charge and penalties have not been made public.

AFACT said the illegal “Simpsons” copy was the first on the Internet and was recorded by a cell phone in a Sydney cinema on July 26 — hours before its release across most of the world. The movie was uploaded to a United States-based global streaming Web site before it was screened in U.S. theaters. “Within 72 hours of making and uploading this unauthorized recording, AFACT had tracked it to other streaming sites and P2P (peer-to-peer) systems, where it had been illegally downloaded in excess of 110,000 times, and in all probability, copied and sold as a pirate DVD all over the world,” AFACT executive director Adrianne Pecotic said. Similarly, Czech police announced today they busted another 19-year-old who made the very first copy of the movie which appeared on torrent networks worldwide. This young guy is facing up to 5 years in jail.

Samuel: you just showed a great deal of ignorance and stupidity. These people do it for the warez community and as you can see it may have serious consequences for them and you just say this bullshit. And by the way, the second guy used digital camera, not cellphone.

Wasn’t the cellphone version the worst ever version of a pirated film to be uploaded on the internet. Bummer. Guy is getting in trouble for uploading a unwatchable version.

“…in all probability, copied and sold as a pirate DVD all over the world.”
Give me a freaking break. This Adrianne Pecotic must be a total dumbass. That copy the guy took with his cell was horrendous, both in terms of audio and video quality.

Martin: Who in the hell watches cell phone quality versions? They did the warez community no favor when uploading such junk.

  10. August 18th, 2007 | 14:00

xyztynz: yeah, these idiots from organizations like MPAA or RIAA always use completely non-sense arguments. it’s the same thing like when they say the lost $10 million because of that – they would never get those money, because 80%+ of people who downloaded would never go to watch it in cinema and buy the overpriced ticket.

“…in all probability, copied and sold as a pirate DVD all over the world.”

Well, the most pirate dvd sellers don’t care what quality the source is in, cause the customers just want it NOW, they all now its shit quality.

5 years??? Well, that shows you what laws are made for… protecting profits, and nothing else.

    August 18th, 2007 | 14:19

I hardly doubt the profits from this movie are suffering because of a measly cellphone recording. They can track a small time wanna be pirate out in Australia but cant find Osama. Wheres the priorities?? The thing of it is they go after the ones thats easy for them to catch and that play no significant role in piracy and usually are people who have no clue what there doing (hence the quality of there releases) thinking there making a statement. I mean come on a cellphone recording of a movie? I seriously doubt its gonna sell world wide. The Authorities wanna tell themselves that they have a grip on piracy but its a losing battle. As long as there is internet this will continue.

  18. John
    August 18th, 2007 | 14:22

The only way to remove a copy of a movie is to get rid of the internet itself.

Couldn’t agree more, and wtf? How do you manage to get caught?
Invasion of privacy on the internet, now that should be fucking illegal…
Hint to anyone who’s think of uploading something copyrighted, don’t do it from your home.

@ John, don’t fuck with my fucking internet… If it somehow is “shut-down” people will come up with other ways.

  21. August 18th, 2007 | 14:40

Talking about Osama, lol when THey’res no proof of his connection with the 911 attacks (false flag op learn your history losers). But that makes a great argument, the big corporations who are such losers can get someone like this. I have some questions:
how was this guy caught ? What mistakes did he make for the authorities to identify him ? Give out his full name, some sort of information request from his ISP to his IP addr ? Some sort of trackable information in the cellphone recording ? All need answers.

And then they’res the DVDSCR. Oopsie!

  22. August 18th, 2007 | 14:52

The Simpsons Movie sucked!! after 18 years of the weekly show you would think the movie version would be genius… thou spiderpig made me laff! by sending a kid to prison for uploading a shitty film recorded on a fone, now what is that going to teach him… what about all the real criminals??? i bet they spent a shit load of money getting finding this kid, money that could feed a village for years! idiots!

Hmm, what im confused about is how two different copies of the film can both be the first on the internet ;)

The first known pirated copy of “The Simpsons Movie” uploaded on the Internet was tracked to a home raided by Australian police Friday, a film industry group said.

Czech police announced today they busted another 19-year-old who made the very first copy of the movie which appeared on torrent networks worldwide.

  25. August 18th, 2007 | 15:04

Firstly, they have not sentenced him for 5 years just yet, he’s just facing this charge, which will (hopefully) be lower in the end. Secondly, he must’ve known that he’s breaking the law by doing it, so there really is no excuse for him. And lastly, I don’t get you guys comparing finding this fella to finding Usama and then blaming all police and goverments and whoknowshat. Finding Usama isn’t near anything like finding a wannabe pirate kid.

  26. Andy
    August 18th, 2007 | 15:04

It is true: There is no way to beat piracy.
Putting the source in jail will solve nothing.
They’ll spend resources on looking for someone to blame and make an example out of, but won’t address the real problem.
The average citizen will do anything to save a buck, and absolutely doesn’t see the movie industry lacking financially to feel sympathy or ethical obligations.

“The average citizen will do anything to save a buck, and absolutely doesn’t see the movie industry lacking financially to feel sympathy or ethical obligations.”

especially when crappy movies that have a budget of over 20 mio. $ are made… and even if it’s not crappy. take a look at the costs of recent blockbusters – instead of decreasing the budgets as a reaction to piracy production companies seem to INcrease them. the people associated with the mpaa are in serious need of brains…

also i’m wondering… up to 5 years for piracy of a movie. and how much is it for rape or murder? might this change society’s moral if sentences this high will be handed out? a movie worth more than human life? “oh no, spreading movies over the internet is wrong, i’ll rather enjoy chopping someone’s head off” o_O

I for one think that it absolutely serves this guy right!

    Whya, you ask?

Well, for uploading the crappiest, shittiest, most unwatchabke version of the movie there ever was!

Apart from the ultra crappy picture quality, this idiot recorded his own weird and stupid laughter all the time:
You’d get a bit of the movie’s audio, than the guy’s “uh-hu, snark, uh hu, ha ha, uh hu haha grunt uh hu, haha”.

For that alone, he should serve at least 3 years!

We need to organize all around the world. We need a savy dude possibly from TPB crew or something to start a website and start pirates organizing to defend people being prosecuted so harshly for such nonsense, and generally promote the intrests of pirates. Millionaires working for BILLION dollar companies who will likely never go out of buisness throwing people who are just having fun in jail for 5 years for basically nothing (the guy wasnt selling it) isnt the world i want to live in.

Its sickening what capitalism has become.

  35. August 18th, 2007 | 15:42

  36. Superpirate
    August 18th, 2007 | 15:47

Ultimately, whatever arguments you guys make, the dude broke the law. There is no way around that. However, the idea that that single copy would cripple the movie’s ticket sales worldwide is ridiculous. Most Americans have no idea what is available via torrents or the scene. So yeah…ok

  37. ChewieDC
    August 18th, 2007 | 15:48

I guess that czech version of Simpsons Movie was dubbed. And it was actually first copy of the movie to hit the internet (it went online on wendsday, tuesday in some areas of USA). Australian version of the movie was first online with english dubbing. So that’s the confusion.

The movie companies are responsible for movie piracy, make no mistake about it. It is the old “problem-reaction-solution” formula they are using. They create the problem by releasing films to European tv and Russia before or when they come out in theaters in the US, or just plain putting dvdscreeners out on the net, knowing full well that the movies will make their way around online. Then of course there is the reaction, such as this poor guy getting arrested for a cell phone copy when Fox themselves sent out god knows how many dvdscreeners of the simpsons. Expect the “solution” part soon, as there will be a major crackdown on piracy and we will enter the age of “net2.0″ where sites like this will not exist and even private groups will become extinct.

    August 18th, 2007 | 16:00

In fact, I’m going to email Alex Jones about this, this is ridiculous, Fox are the ones responsible for the movie being online, this guy getting arrested for a theater bootleg will be on the nightly news and the 70% of North America’s population that still get all their news from the main stream media will see this guy’s story and think that all internet copies of movies come from methods like this, when, as all of us know, most come from the movie studio’s themselves or from legally released r5′s in russia. PROBLEM-REACTION-SOLUTION people!!!

  54. phishybongwaters
    August 18th, 2007 | 16:56

Ok, look. If movie companies are really losing millions for each movie they put out because of piracy, how come each week or so, a movie breaks box office records.

That’s right, every month or so a movie breaks the world record for box office revenue, in history.

Martin is exactly right, they use BS numbers and outright lies. None of the simpsons copies has cost them a dime, not until the release group physically steals the source retail DVD from fox so they can’t press copies, it isn’t even theft.

It’s the same when you see a large pot bust on TV and they claim 500,000$ worth of dope. When infact, it’s about 0$ because first, the plants aren’t mature, second you don’t sell went plants, third, they weigh the plants, soil, planters, seed, leaf, all wet.

  55. doh!
    August 18th, 2007 | 16:56

Huh, I don’t understand. Wasn’t there a DVDSCR version of higher quality? why did they failed to catch the leak for that one?

  57. Osterwelle
    August 18th, 2007 | 17:05

In germany and Switzerland you only will get 5 Years if you are selling the copies to people (which i think is right to be punished). just for filming and uploading you will prolly only get a fine and all that crappy ads and stuff like “raubkopierer sind verbrecher” etc. is just a try to scare normal people from downloading movies

I hate going to the theatres… stupid ni99ers dont know how to act in a theatre and fight and throw stuff. pricks. I love to watch movies but jackasses at the theater ruin the experience hence just download and watch at home.

Just release the movie and a week later release the dvd for home users. Put what DRM bullshit you want on it i dont care. You will see piracy drop FAST that way.

They went for the guy with the crappy version coz he was easy to catch…

They would never go for the REAL PIRATES of the world, as the profits involved are tied up in many governments and big companies worldwide, and would cause a near economical catastrophy for a lot of countries.

A MAN who raped a Muslim woman because she showed an interest in Christianity has been jailed for at least five years by a Sydney court.

A Man who’s crime only cost money not physical or mental pain could get up to 5 years.

Update: So, the czech guy was so UNBELIEVABLY STUPID that notz only he kept all things at home, easy to find, but he shared it via unspecified p2p network (which is easily traceable by itself, I dotn think he used Share or Winny) and he posted the link on FORUM WITHOUT any proxy or any other security.. god I’m glad there aren’t much CZ warez groups, because huge percent of “warez people” here are only shame to whole community..

sometimes it feels like anti-piracy companies wants to keep the situation like it is now. there havent been any recent busts or whatsoever for a long time, only news you get is the “ordinary” people getting the dirt by leeching off from torrents/p2p.

Of course this keeps the anti-piracy companies in business and it profits them. Same like with viruses and malware. Instead of really educating the users to use program properly and hardening the programs, you have to buy internet security licenses, which are almost all based on timely model rather than versioning. And it doesnt stop there. Next you will have to buy anti-phishing software and game/software starts to use pricing by content. in other words, next time you boot up your vista and pay some shitty fsp, you cannot pick some weapon up because you havent bought right slot for the weapon, or cannot go to some map because its only for “super”-paid users.

And actually, there were rumors a while back, that starforce and one famous scene group got deal about releasing. And its well known that every copy-protection firm got at least one ex-cracker within them :)

removal from the Internet = removed from the United States-based global streaming website

The screener copy is great quality, so don’t bother with the cell phone copy.

The movie itself was no better than a long episode of the TV show.

    Breaking News!!!!

At New York’s Kennedy airport, an individual later discovered to be a public school teacher was arrested trying to board a flight while in possession of a ruler, a protractor, a setsquare, a slide rule, and a calculator. At a morning press conference, Attorney general John Ashcroft said he believes the man is a member of the notorious al-gebra movement. He is being charged by the FBI with carrying weapons of math instruction.

    poor guy

The first factor is about whether the use in question helps fulfill the intention of copyright law to stimulate creativity for the enrichment of the general public, or whether it aims to only “supersede the objects” of the original for reasons of, say, personal profit. To justify the use as fair, one must demonstrate how it either advances knowledge or the progress of the arts through the addition of something new. A key consideration is the extent to which the use is interpreted as transformative, as opposed to merely derivative.

This severely crappy copy was obviously just a parody of a pirated version of the film. Release the prisoner.. :)

i agree with fixed we need to get under 16s bodies copyrighted, then serious kiddy porn makers will get 5 years,,,at least then people who go inside for pirating simpsons etc will go inside knowing its not for nothing

  102. August 19th, 2007 | 12:55

whats the danger of this sort of arrest to the people that download movies? do they worry about them or worry more about the uploader?

  103. Rohit
    August 19th, 2007 | 14:18

Oh yeah, Hollywood may also have it’s first 4 billion dollar summer, to all you that think piracy is a problem.
And everyone working hard with releases, keep it up.

This is fantastic…. tax payers money well spent here, imagine if this guy had been left to upload yet another phone recorded movie, the movie industry would go broke… but seriously, if you were to compare the amount of tax payers money spent to track this type of crap to what the movie industries supposedly lose, we basically already paid to see it :P

Instead of worrying about tracking pirates etc. why don’t they spend their resources tracking people who place viruses and all that crap on the internet instead, which probably ends up costing individuals more (buying protection program’s, replacing hardware, re-buying lost software and data loss etc.) than the movie industries would lose…. Ok I’m tired and all that prolly made no sense… basically the situation is the same as the governments stance on marijuana, they don’t want it around cause they cant make money off it like they do alcohol (taxes) so they try and prohibit it as best they can when really it isn’t that much of a problem in the first place ^_^

  105. August 19th, 2007 | 14:37

I agree with Nezzy. It’s all propaganda and bullshit. Fuck the society!

Oh and 1 more thing I forgot to mention is now as a tax payer I also have to contribute to this guy staying in jail for X amount of time… so thats just a little more money spent on nothing… sigh, where did we go wrong.

  109. August 19th, 2007 | 17:34

i hope the guy gets off with the lightest penalty, because although it was the worst copy of this great film, you guys and girls have to remember that if it wernt for these people, the warez industry on the web would not exist. Just think about it Pukka releases some great titles with great quality, but he also releases some pretty average ones aswell. think about that

P.S sorry bout that Pukka group, it was just a example
