Piracy isn’t THAT bad and they know it

I received a very pleasant mail today. My inbox is usually full of stupid cease & desist messages from various antipiracy organizations, but it’s mails like this one which make you happy. It’s good to see that some people realize that internet piracy isn’t just evil…

To Whom It May Concern:

My name is Eric D. Wilkinson and I am the producer of a small independent film called “Jerome Bixby’s The Man From Earth” (our review).

I am sending you this email after realizing that our website has had nearly 23,000 hits in the last 12 days, much of it coming from your website. In addition, our trailer, both on the www.manfromearth.com site and other sites like YouTube, MySpace and AOL has been watched nearly 20,000 times AND what’s most impressive is our ranking on IMDb went from being the 11,235th most popular movie, to the 5th most popular movie in 2 weeks (we are also the #1 independent film on IMDb & the #1 science fiction film on IMDb). How did this all happen? Two words: Torrent / File Sharing sites (well, four words and a slash).

More specifically, RLSLOG.net. Our independent movie had next to no advertising budget and very little going for it until somebody ripped one of the DVD screeners and put the movie online for all to download. After that happened, people were watching it and started posting mostly all positive reviews on IMDb, Amazon and other places. Most of the feedback from everyone who has downloaded “The Man From Earth” has been overwhelmingly positive. People like our movie and are talking about it, all thanks to piracy on the net!

Am I upset… surprisingly no. Thanks to everyone who has downloaded this torrrent and watched the film, our awareness level is through the roof. For that I say, “THANK YOU”!

What you guys have done here is nothing short of amazing. In the future, I will not complain about file sharing. YOU HAVE HELPED PUT THIS LITTLE MOVIE ON THE MAP!!!! When I make my next picture, I just may upload the movie on the net myself!

This guy really deserves support from the file shareing community! You can support producers of The Man From Earth by buying the retail DVD, which should be available in the US stores from tomorrow.

Update: Proof for the non believers:

With so many scams on the internet these days it is not entirely surprising that some may jump to conclusions about the legitimacy of this whole ordeal. Well for one I can tell you he does indeed check out as legitimate. Here are some reasons:

  1. his comment IP matches his comcast ISP when a whois query is initiated
  2. his email is the same on his myspace page and he references in his rlslog comments
  3. he recently added more proof with an image of himself with the rlslog.net website

Recently his new myspace message confirms. Also the Director, Richard Schenkman gives his backup that both of the men have “discussed the matter quite extensively before reaching out to the download community.” But their whole idea behind ‘going public’ was to “pull a Radiohead… to reach out to the online community and say, “If you downloaded this movie and liked it, please buy the DVD; and if you can’t buy the DVD where you live, please send us some money.”

Eric: Here’s is a picture I took of myself five minutes ago in front of my computer screen while logged into rlslog.net.

Most of those indiependent artists, regardless the field they participate in, have nothing to fear. On the contrary…they put their name and work into anyone’s awareness.

Even Radiohead understood this simple fact. They managed to earn a fortune just by “selling” 160Kbps files, before their cd even appeared on the selfs. That way they promoted their work and gained hundreds of pounds as well.

I’ve been telling people that for years. Nice to see some proof. File sharing creates a buzz.I find myself speaking of movies I watch at work and find out they go see them at the theatre over the weekend. Word of mouth advertisement in it’s purest form.

    ERIC:

If you can se this, im very happy to read your mail since that shows the heart of the industry, to make movies! and for people to se them, ofcrs you want money for your work and you should, i hope people will buy the retail DVD so that you will be able to create your next movie soon.

That is what piracy is all about, id be more then happy to buy your dvd just for the support, we need more people like you in the movie buisness that realizes the truth.

Thanks and i will download this movie first to se what its all about :)

    Cheers

This is really good news. Being an actor I have quite a few friends who are in small budget movies that are of a good quality, and I have been telling them that they should stick them on sites like this to gain interest. I will continue to do so!

why doesnt every movie producer show some paypal account in his movie, so that people who liked it and downloaded it can give them some money? fighting piracy is useless, but using it for good purposes will bring you further

    Io Martin.
Glad you posted it gives us a warm cozy feeling.
Maybe you should “bump” this topic when the DVD hits the stores.

Love to hear from the “little people” that instead of whining
from the profit they lost, glee on the attention they got.

Maybe if Hollywood didin’t spend millions in exploding cars,
insane paychecks an all-round spending frenzy in a movies’
    production, they probably profitted more…

This is funny .Guy have absolutely right .
But what he ACTUALY GET from piracy ?

Like he said “our awareness level is through the roof”.Nothing about MONEY people .So this guy who is “My name is Eric D. Wilkinson and I am the producer of a small independent film ” said he will make another movie and put it himself over internet ?

This is FUNNY .How many people he think he will invest into his new movie ? No matter how good it is .Put it over internet aka GIVE IT for free and no money will be made .

Or u guys think that radiohead receipt is universal apply ?Radiohead WHERE ALREADY FAMOUS .If u put your mp3 over internet and ask people to give u money how much u think u will make ? NOTHING .

So u will be forced to wake up in the morning and go to WORK quiting making GOOD MUSIC .Why ? All because basicaly u need to pay bills .Eat put gas into your car and not the less pay for internet bill .

Good luck to all producers who decide to “give/sell” their content over internet .

Don’t get me wrong, but i think that peple who produces movies like “The Man From Earth”, can afford write things like this. I very appreciate such kind of gesture, but its only because its small budget movie..
Huge studios and producers can not affort support this website and similar sites, because they will be immediately go bankrupt and there would by nothing for us to download. And thats why we’ll be alwas the bad guys. :) Becouse we’re breaking the chain. We download it, they have less money, and than they’ll stop producing Heroes! It sad, but i afraid also the a truth
But after all it’s nice to read it..

for example I wouldn’t mind donate or pay for something that i enjoyed instead of having to pay to have it or to watch it and risk wasting money

i didn’t saw the movie, but i’m definitely going to do it now

All users here need to be careful of their statistical analysis and illusory correlations when interpreting findings. I see Mr. X consistently referring to that study that shows more purchases of cd’s “supposedly associated with more frequent downloading” – but what you all must realize is that this is a self-fulfilling argument b/c the ppl that love music in the first place are the ones exhibiting high frequencies in both variables.

Those findings show jack in the way of promoting positives of piracy – there may be other findings but I’m just saying that particular study is flawed.

    @Martin[staff]

Even without the support of said director to your site I think that rlslog is a great site nevertheless.

But in no intention of bursting your bubble or anything. Are you sure that the said REAL director sent you this email? Are you sure its actually Eric D. Wilkinson himself and NOT some internet kiddy PRANK or something?

Well I do hope its not but you can never be too careful in the “tubes” these days with all the scams and pranks.

However if said director was genuinely thankful then enough has been said.

That is brilliant..I thoughally enjoyed the movie thats to this link.

It makes a change to see this and of course some makers of films can see the positive reaction to their work and again putting them on the map because a lot more people have watched in and talked about it.

Not all films can afford great advertising not all films are that good to start with..this small film was really good and thought provoking.

Thanks for the link to that and I now am on a quest to find other works by the writer and director..isnt that the way this works….?

In the 1960’s, people had FM radio and recorded music neatly from the radio on to tape. In the late 1970’s, the VCR poked its head out and people started recording TV and movies on the new HBO and Cinemax! Hollywood and the recording industry didn’t collapse around those items. These two GREEDY components of retail…they need to cut back and re-market their products and stop wasting their money on anti-piracy efforts of the individuals…like the Canadian article you guys posted, downloading a song leads to people purchasing the album later!

Perhaps other producers should take ‘Erics’ lead here and realise that a good movie can be made on a small budget. Also with less overheads more profit can be made, even when torrents are available of the movies.

Hats off to you Eric for taking the time to write a letter to show your approval. I have downloaded the movie but haven’t got around to watching it yet. I may just have to put it off and buy the DVD when it is available in the U.K.

Tv networks are offering their shows online, Bionic woman you could watch the episode online before it even airs. Movies will soon be straight to download.

If he continues to “support” the moralism of piracy (ie don’t give the creators a dime of your money), he might not even get to make any next movie, I’m pretty sure he’s going to have major problems getting funders with such kind of statements. But if all he’s ever aspiring for is making indie movies with next to no budget, perhaps he’ll succeed.

This is great to read! I’ve seen quite a bit of talk on this flick recently so I may well grab it & give it a watch.
If you’ve downloaded and enjoyed this though, make sure you give the support Mr Wilkinson deserves by buying the retail when you can!

It’s refreshing to see people recognising the “pros” of piracy rather than focussing on the often untrue “cons”…

Wow, the movie industry can use a lot more people like Eric D. Wilkinson _O_

I really liked the movie, i was going to recommend it to my friends, and now i can make the story about the movie ten times more interesting, by telling them that the producer of the movie wrote an positive email to the release sites.

Are you idiots? This guy is asking money on his paypal account… Is this the reward he wants? We are talking about a film with a director, actors, staff… And a relatively relevant producer takes money on his paypal account?

This is scam guys, open your eyes.

I got it last week, didn’t enjoy it much, guess not my type of film genre. If it wasn’t posted here, I probably would have saw it at a video store and rented it, but since I got it here, I dont plan to support it anymore. That goes with everything I get here. Just being honest, unlike most of you here. :)

C’mon guys.. THIS IS THE KIND OF ACTION WE’VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR.

come on, guys, let’s not start fooling ourselves here – we’re not the ‘good guys’, we’re getting loads of stuff for free and have no intention whatsoever of doing good deeds by being here

there are certain cases where being on rlslog translates as fantastic advertising and promotion for a product, and this director guy’s shrewd response will only help that

but let’s put this in perspective a bit and PLEASE cut out all this hypocriticial warm n fuzzy bs

    @24

Letoll – You seem to be fixated on the £$£$£$£$ of the matter, and completely ignore the crux of the whole argument against the music/film industries.

The industries themselves have absolutely nothing to do with making great films or music, but about copyright ownership, and distribution. It’s true, everyone has to work, and movies themselves are not free to make, whether you are an independent filmmaker, or a Hollywood ‘blockbuster by the numbers’ director. However, only the most vapid and soulless music & film releases are the ones where it’s all about the money. Filmmakers & musicians who truly love what they’re doing are only focussed on getting their film seen or their music heard by as many people as possible. Anything else is (literally) immaterial.

I’ll gladly support this guy when the film comes out on DVD

    @90 Anonymous,
I for one, and many of my friends, have purchased software after testing the “free” version. I think most of us here have been “burned” numerous times buying crap software and movies which can’t be returned after being opened. So your post actually means that you may just be more dis-honest than the average here.
