Phishing Warning!

Hello guys just a quick announcement.

Please try to refrain from using download links that are protected or using any kind of link shortening service such as:

http://link-protector.com/857667/
http://tinyurl.com/dhfews and etc

I saw many of these links and they were phishing sites. Basicially when you add your details it will automatically be sent to the person who made it.

When downloading or using your user name make sure it’s on the correct site, for example Rapidshare.com could be easily mistaken for Rapidshare.fr.com (which could be a phishing site). When ever you are typing any important details please make sure you type it in the correct site.

When you type in a password for important sites such as Rapidshare, PayPal, Ebay, Internet Banking and etc you will see a lock symbol near where the loading bar is.

This means that the site is encrypted, so it makes sure unauthorized people won’t see any details. Make sure when you type in passwords in places like Rapidshare or PayPal you see that lock, if not then don’t sign in.

Change your password very often. Make them long and not guessable, click Here for a password generator!

If you have any doubts that you have typed in your passwords in sites like these you should change your password immediately.

Please note that i am not saying all these links are phishing sites. To be on the safe side i recommend you not use them as there should be links without these protectors.

Solutions

  • Change password regualy
  • If you know you used the “Save Password” option on the browser, don’t retype you password on download pages, instead go to the official homepage and type it there.
  • Use download managers that grab the links and download them automatically, for example IDM, type in your username and password once in the options and it will download links without you typing passwords again.
  • Adding more soon…

Yeah there have been many phising sites appearing on the web lately, mostly on rapidshare cause most people have accounts there.
An easy way though to avoid having your account phised is to get any download manager/accelerator app.
I’m currently using IDM (internet download manager) and when I need to download anything from rapidshare I just use this app. In fact I don’t ever log into rapidshare anymore, except when to upload.

Thanky for that advice but it’d be way more interesting why RS link is refused by now. There are some posts on this site with now downloadlinks inside and I’m not able to post any uploaded stuff right now.

Well, it may be just me but I don’t feel the need of a RapidShare account. There are already host sites where you can start playing and downloading at the same time and they are 100% free, no personal data required. RapidShare is history!

what i do for net banking and any site i have to type in usernames/passwords is have a text file where all the info is, and just copy/paste it into the appropriate fields. That way if a keylogger is sniffing you, they wont know what keys u are hitting.
Thanks for looking out for us. Keep up the great work you do here, it is VERY much appreciated.

Just so you know, key loggers are 99% of the time able to log copy & paste too!

    @ Me

despite the fact that keeping your info on a text file is a big vulnerability, you have to be careful, there are clipboard sniffers and they can catch whatever you copy & past.

I use link-protector for all my uploads and so far I don’t think it is a phishing thing. In fact, many other uploaders I’ve known also uses link-protector because it simply keep RS and MU links alive much longer. I would like to see proofs that it is phishing.

@Me & all others: Please use well-updated anti-virus/anti-trojan tools more often ;) If you are going to save important data, use TrueCrypt to create (hidden) volumes, and unmount them as soon as work is done.
Use AI Roboform or the free KeePass for things like accounts and passwords. Saves a lot of time. And please … don’t forget to use Brain 2.0 if you are on the ‘net :)

Same as #5. Install DivX and get filebase links. For the phishing part nothing’s better than your brain.

@16, most of exe files on the net are “tr00jans”

    October 14th, 2008 | 13:35

    Yeah, be careful.
Now there are some script that clone RS.
So it can be anywhere and you will lose your account if give password.
Because of these people, me and a friend created a RS account and he downloads files per torrent or Megaupload and upload to my http://FTP.
So I do remote upload on RS account. This take about 5 to 10 minutes for 1 CD. (He lives in Japan).

    October 14th, 2008 | 13:36

it’s not like all those links are phishing atempts. seems to be a kinda regional thing: where i live at almost all warez sites use either some kind of link protection (rslayer, linkprotector, custom stuff) or encrypted link containers (.ccf, .dlc) whereas i hardly see that on english sites
as long as the text link on the page is not changed you can just copy + paste them into your favorite download manager (who downloads from RS using his browser anyways). MSD ftw (http://schneewiesel.ath.cx/msd.php) simple, no java bullsh1t (~5mb RAM), multi stream, link filter, auto unpacker -> perfection

    October 14th, 2008 | 13:46

why does rlslog not ban peoples ip adresses who post viruses and files with no association to the topic, e.g instead of crysis warhead someone posting a babmi video!!. I know they can use an ip adress changer but you can find the originator ip.

  22. DaVaDa
    October 14th, 2008 | 13:47

@AV: That’s some good advice but you should not forget that links abusing is not so popular in the rest of the world than it is in back in germany.

@staff: What about unblocking comments with rs links right now? It’s still not possible to post uploaded files.

    October 14th, 2008 | 14:11

If anyone is using links posted in Rlslog’s comments to get their goodies, they deserve to get fuq’d over. Find out what has been released through this site, then go to your trusted source for the files. If your trusted source doesn’t have it as fast as this site does(most likely the case), wait for it.

I dont care about phishing. All I care about right now is that my head size is humongous, and I need some kind of miracle drug to fix that problem. As far as I know, anti-virus software has no use.

If you have 60 gigs of your uploads deleted because of complaints, then you know why people uses link protection for their uploads. Even worse is that people complains about using link protection and then when the links they wanted is already dead, they request for reup.

  33. jackketch
    October 14th, 2008 | 15:17

There really shouldn’t be any need to use link protectors, although as someone already said its a regional thing. When I sue german sites they tend to have a lot of link protected stuff.

Anyways the solution is simple, if you download something then re-up it if you notice that links for it are dying..earn yourself a free tshirt from rapidshare. Especially with major film releases links get shut down very fast (rapidshare have 6 people who spend their day just reading sites like these) so be a good sharing care-bear and re-up.

  34. IntenseDebate
    October 14th, 2008 | 15:20

agreed on that. there are plenty phising php script lately. so be careful when downloading. always put your password in your download manager. so you never need to enter your password/login in rapidshare etc

link protector’s are absolute nonsense. I don’t even know why anybody uses them. Exactly how do they protect the links? If you have a premium account on RS - then that means you want to download, and link protector type links only prevent PREMIUM users from seeing the URL because as soon as you have clicked through on the link protector page - RS sees your cookie, notices you are a premium user and then sends you the file, so you never see the RS page. Now as an RS premium user - why would you report URLs? The whole point you bought a premium account is so you can download, so you arent exactly going to report URLs otherwise you will have nothing to download and your premium account will be a waste.

Free users on the other hand get to see the RS page and even though the URL is protected above being masked by the link protector URL, within every RS page is the direct URL anyways (above the speed dial image). People or companies who report copyright violations to RS will be free users - why would they want a premium account? They just want to see links removed of offending pages that have their company music/software etc.

So link protectors serve NO PURPOSE. If a premium user also wants to find a URL - then he can just sign out of his RS account and then when he clicks on the link protector link - it will take him to the same RS page as a free user would see and the page URL will be clearly shown above the download speed dial image.

So how does a link protector page/URL protect a link? It doesn’t! Stop kidding yourself. It is easy to find the actual URL of a rapidshare download, and free users can always see it.

  37. protector user
    October 14th, 2008 | 16:14

It would be harder for link complainers to complain about links that are masked than those served on a silver platter, but just like what I have already said, most people never have their 60 gigs upload deleted and only know to give motivational comments on how to be a good sharer by reupping files, :)

    October 14th, 2008 | 16:28

    @35

Dunno , maybe its just me or where i am but most of the free ones suck speedwise compared to rapidshare. Don’t get me wrong RS used to suck too (i posted a more than once here moaning about it) but for the last 6 months or so they have got superb. I normally get an average 1.4 MB/s (which pounds torrents and usenet into the ground-although again that just might be my rather nasty ISP and yes I do know how to forward ports!)

I bought a megashare account this month just to see and its speeds are dismal by comparison.

pfft why are they bothering trying to steal rapidshare logins :s they’re only 5 bucks a pop , not like they’re woth thousands .

    @38 jackketch

1.4MB/s FROM RAPIDSHARE?!? Is that a paid acount?

I get 1.8 - 2.4 MB/s from all of my torrent trackers and WAY over 1.4MB/s from FREE filehost sites!!!! for example I get a standard 1.8MB/s from Netload (free, no account)…

  42. jackketch
    October 14th, 2008 | 16:44

@41 yeah paid (although its ‘free’ pretty much 6 months a year cos I share a fair bit). And my 1.4 is an average-it’ll got to three on a good day (when america is offline early in the morning).

You sure you ain’t confusing Mb/s and MB/s?…lot of people do.

  43. Fast
    October 14th, 2008 | 17:00

i get 10MB/s from rapidshare for free, only takes a month of uploading for your first premium account. After that it gets easier since you have a back catalogue to build on

    October 14th, 2008 | 17:10

Here is another thing to look out for… When using official links that are protected. Pay attention to the site it “redirects” you to. Often it is not the link protector site that steals the information but the following site. Heres the catch! The following site can not steal your information if you do NOT input it. So if you feel the site is a fake? Simply look for a different download link.

*Web browsers (Safari, Firefox, IE7, etc) offer to save your passwords, for those of us who do not like retyping them over and over. If you have a password to rapidshare saved and you click to download from a “fake” link it will get your information.

I have fiber and I can’t get anything over 1MB/s from Rapidshare, however I can get 10MB/s from usenet.

As to the article with the “lock” thing… I’ve seen phishing sites using real SSL certificates. They go to trustico.com and get the 30 day free SSL cert, and they end up with SSL secured phishing sites.

    @ “rapidshare is so slooooow”
if i’m downloading via my browser speed is quite random too but on 20 streams it’s _always_ at the max (10mbit). u feel how websites take longer to load if you don’t limit it. try that before whining about RS

“it pisses me off when people use rapidshare they are just idiots with more money than sense,… ”

yeah 5 bucks/month could probably feed 100 of you ethiopians …

  54. WillyWanker
    October 14th, 2008 | 22:43

To those that report “slow” dl’ing from Rapidshare, get yourself a download manager.

For instance, Internet Download Manager states it:

“IDM divides downloaded file on file segments dynamically, unlike other download accelerators that divide downloaded file in segments once just before download process starts. Dynamic segmentation gives significant download performance improvement. When file download starts, it’s unclear how many connections may be opened. When new connection becomes available IDM finds the largest segment to download and divide it in half. Thus new connection starts downloading file from the half of the largest file segment. IDM minimizes the time needed for negotiations with servers and keeps all connections busy.”

The reality of this is that your download pipeline is essentially maxed out. Barring an infrequent event, I top out my bandwidth on every Rapidshare download. The same is not true if I don’t use a download manager. I can not comment on current Rapidshare speeds as a “free” user, and may only apply as a “paid” user.

If you still have less than your believed max bandwidth download speed, then it is a problem outside of Rapidshare.

ive come across alot of links being post here the last couple of months that were asking to input my rapidshare.com login and password info. ive had a premium rapidshare account for about 2years now and the first time in those 2years that its asked me to login again. so i new something wasnt right and i went to rapidshare.com and click on the premium zone link. it automatically directed me to my folders and files. right there and then i knew it was a scam to steal users premium accounts.
