Perfume The Story Of A Murderer LIMITED DVDRip XviD-DMT
Wow, another great DVDRiP! Release group DMT published a nice dvdrip of criminal thriller “Perfume: The Story Of A Murderer”. Although it was announced as limited, this movie quickly became very popular and the IMDB rating is also very high. Another proof that you don’t need well-known actors but rather an interesting idea and good camera to make a good movie!
Jean-Baptiste Grenouille (BEN WHISHAW) is born in undignified circumstances at the Paris fish market in 1738. At a very early age he realises he has a very refined sense of smell. After surviving the murderous working conditions of the tannery in his youth, Grenouille starts an apprenticeship at the perfumery of Baldini (DUSTIN HOFFMAN). He soon surpasses his master at the art of mixing scents, but they also become his obsession, an obsession that drives him away from human company.

Possessed by the idea of preserving human aromas, he unscrupulously murders young women whose scent turns his head. The drama takes its course when Grenouille meets the beautiful Laura (RACHEL HURD-WOOD), who for him has a supernatural kind of scent, on the way to the perfume metropolis, Grasse. While further unexplained murders occur, Laura’s father, the merchant Richis (ALAN RICKMAN), suspects that his daughter’s life is also in great danger. A real cat-and-mouse game of close fatherly love and deadly passion begins…

I would call this movie the best of 2006 - but it all comes down to personal taste and the mood you are in when watching a movie. Personally I was surprised to see that a film adaptation was made for this hideous and yet beautiful story - I just had to see it right away as I remember the vividness with wich all the senses were described (especially the olfactory one). I really had to see how on earth they would ever manage to convey that on film.
Apparently Kubrick had deemed this book “unfilmable” while he was still alive. This adaptation is near perfect as adaptations go - only surpassed by Kubrick’s “A Clockwork Orange”. To me this movie (Perfume) was a pure work of art when it comes to the technical bits: The photo was excellent, just beautiful breathtaking compositions with the most amazing colours. The direction was flawless and the actors were as good as they’ll ever be. One thing that really complemented this movie was it’s score. A good score and sound is supposed to be hard to pick up on - because then it means that it just emphasises the story and what’s going on onscreen. This score is excellent and well worth a listening on it’s own.
*possible spoiler*
As for the story: It’s like a slow trainwreck where you already know the outcome before it is set in motion - you simply can’t turn your head away from all the horrid things you know are going to unfold before you. You root for things to happen otherwise, you hope, you wish, you sit in a clenched state of bewilderment and awe at what is unfolding: You envy the way that this one person perceives beauty - so unobtainable and pure and unique - yet he is unable to share his comprehension of it with others. You pity his lack of social understanding, you are repulsed by his mercyless actions in his pursuit for…
Yet, most people find it easy to sympathise with this murderer. This of course has more to do with Patrick Süskind’s excellent book which is nothing short of a masterpiece in more than one way. It’s a study of social behaviour and also shows the writer’s awareness of how we as humans perceive things as it clearly turns the table on right and wrong and makes us “understand” the killer and sympathise with him…
Sorry about the dragged out “comment”, but I just had to give my 2 cents about this great movie. I would give it a 9/10 but as movies that are this good are in short supply it should be reflected as well so it gets a perfect 10 for filling a big void.

a really good movie, an 8
unreal, this movie is awsome, thanks Martin, if it wasnt for ur website I would have never seen this movie. Thanks a lot.
no, definitely not the best of 06. cinematography and score are breathtaking, no question. but direction, dramatic depth and scope, are severely lacking, not to mention uneven casting. it is not a matter of slowness–this is no tarkovsky. after a while you get annoyed at the bombardment of images. subtlety please? @greken, distinguish book, which is excellent, from film, not so. also note that when kubrick (and scorsese) said it’s unfilmable, he was basing it on a personal filmmaking style, i.e. he couldn’t have made it without seriously undermining the integrity of his work. impressive effort, still falls short on many things. and uh, a rating is a rating is a rating: who rates something high to compensate for the “void” of something lacking?

I give it a 9 stars for me(in my opinion).
I just dont like the s*x orgy part. but the plot of the story
carried it anyway.
Why Marvel or DC Comics doesnt make any Superhero that has a super human sense of smell? What will be his/her name?
"Smelly" I guess.
