Penumbra Overture-PROCYON

Group PROCYON released a new adventure just a few moments ago. Little strange name Penumbra Overture can already point some players to the fact it is an adventure. This adventure is little special though: it is a horror one, and people who played the demo could confirm that you will get frightened of it easily. It works on similar shocking system as Silent Hill and similar titles, where something scary appears in the most unexpected moment. Ind if you still find adventures boring, grab the NFO somewhere, these guys went totally mad once again. :-)

Penumbra: Overture is a first person adventure game which focuses on story, immersion and puzzles. Instead of using violence to progress the player has to use his/her wits to guide Philip on his quest to unravel the past.

Played from a first person viewpoint, Penumbra is very different from other adventure games. Not only is it powered by a 3D engine utilising cutting edge technology, it also has an advanced physics system which allow for a never before seen environment interaction. The player can open drawers, pull levers, pick up objects and more using natural mouse movements creating a highly interactive and immersive game world.

The weapon system differs from your average game; swinging a melee weapon is done using the mouse which increases the realistic feel of combat. Fighting enemies is not something best done with brute force though, in most situations fighting is a last resort and the player is often better of using his/her wits. The AI of the enemies will also do its best to hunt and scare the player. The creatures encountered can break down doors, use group co-ordination, interact with the physics and more.

Penumbra: Overture will keep players on the edge as they have to explore scary and immersive environments never knowing what is behind the next corner. The world is detailed, graphical as well as a story wise making the player feel part of the world as secrets are uncovered.

Like all good nightmares, Philip’s begins with something all too real - his mother’s death. The days following the funeral are characterized by nothing, save for an incessant feeling of abandonment. Until, that is, he receives a letter from a dead man. Philip’s father left before he was born, taking his reasons with him. Now, here he is, opening up the door from beyond the grave. That door leads to more questions, and those questions lead to Greenland. Philip follows the clues - they’re all he has left.

Game features:

  • First-person adventure
  • Immersive, spellbinding story
  • Cutting-edge advanced physics system for maximum environment interaction
  • Intricately detailed graphics
  • Clever, brain-teasing puzzles

Minimum system requirements:

  • Windows 2K/XP

The old tech demo and the demo of this were both awesome. High quality for a game coming from such small developer, they are like 4-5 guys if I remember correctly.

Highly recommend this, granted… you probably have to like horror games. If you do though, this is fantastic.

“It works on similar shocking system as Silent Hill”

Huh??? SH is psychological horror, there’s not Doom-3-style “boo”, you even have a radio that emits static noise when enemies are near.

Btw, there’s gonna be a Linux and OSX versions too, “Currently, however, for episode 1 the linux and mac versions will be separate from the Windows versions, and be available as download only. For Episode 2 we will hopefully have a unified CD with all three OSes on the CD.”

    EXCELLENT GAME!
If you look at the size you would NEVER expect
    a jewel like this one.
The physic engine and graphics are great, the atmosphere terrifying.

Almost had 2 heartattacks playing this LOL.
Good games do not nec. need ALOT of space, this is one of them

The game is indeed fucking awesome, I must admit I didn’t feel like downloading it because it was only 400 mb. Seeing all the larger releases with the ‘good’ games lately. But still, I downloaded it. Got it pretty fast and started playing about 20mins back. It’s around midnight at the moment and I’m scared shitless while playing it. I know I can expect something coming out of the dark so I’m constantly on my guard and scared of every sound XD

You really get dragged into the story, mainly because you’ve got so much freedom with the random items and physhics and the notes.

Really recommend it for players who don’t mind playing a game that’s not a ’standard shooter’ =p

If you loved Obscure & Condemned Criminals you would really like this too. If you like FEAR probably this too, but not if you liked FEAR because of the ’standard-shooting’ part XD

Just try and play it, it’s only 400mb and installed around 800 and it rocks so far.

I haven’t played it that long just yet, so I can’t really tell much about the rest. But it starts out great and it’s already addicting. Just try it out =p

  22. March 29th, 2007 | 23:28

Meatcart: nice to hear that, i told you it’s not bad ;)

i’ll get this for sure, but Condemned was the scariest shit out of all the games i played. The part where guy pushed me down the escalator was fucki9ng unexpected and i freaked big time.

Btw, FEAR wasn’t anything special in terms of horror. Just one time it got me freaked when i was climbing down (or up) the ladder and when turned the bitch appeared out of nowhere, that was the only part that scared me.

Hope this game has few thrills in itself ;)

    release got nuked

  36. May 31st, 2007 | 21:56

This is is good for the atmosphere, graphics and physics, but my God DOES THE COMBAT SUCK ASS!!!! I don’t think I’ve ever played a melee game where you couldn’t aim and swing at the same time. Why ruin a great game with one little pain in the ass.

Anyone know a place for a no cd fix for this overture? i’ve been looking for hours.

  40. Armstrong14
    March 30th, 2008 | 03:47

A no cd fix? I thought this release came with one… I downloaded it off of thepiratebay, and it IS a creepy game… It like plays with your mind, thinking something huge will pop out in front of you the whole game!

    Maybe you don’t need a no cd fix… I don’t think I did… And I’m playing it on Vista.
