Penny Arcade Adventures on the Rain - Slick Precipice of Darkness Episode 1 v1.0-TE

Here we are…another episode game. This one is made by Hothead Games & Penny Arcade and released by TE. This genre becomes trend in PC games. Sometimes they make 1 episode and then nothing…like the game never existed. But let’s hope that this would not happen to this one. There are lot’s of episode games and they are mostly very popular (e.g. like Sam & Max episodes that is made four younger crowd but this game is a little bit serous) mostly because of humor in them but in this one is action too! You can use a lot of weapons (like prong or paint ball gun, rocks, rockets) as the game develops. Create your own player (even with dorky glasses and chose his clothes, head shape…and many more).

Opening animation is good and starts with a VERY serious poem. If you want to know how it goes you have to install the game and see it by yourself. I’m telling you wont be disappointed. I give this game a score of 8/10. After all the game has little hardware requirement and has been made for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux & X Box (this version is for WINDOWS). My opinion is: They have done the job good. On us is just to play it and maybe buy it if you will like it like me.

Now what they say about the game:

Description:Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, Episode 1 is the first installment in the RPG-Adventure game series based on the web comic Penny Arcade. Create your character in the classic comic style, and join Gabe and Tycho in the alternate 1920s universe of New Arcadia, where you’ll combat savage enemies, solve mysteries, meet bizarre new characters, and discover their distinctive adult humor for a 100% authentic Penny Arcade experience!

Game features:

  • Create-a-Player System lets you design and develop your own character, seeing it come to life in 3D and in the comic-style 2D cut scenes
  • Dynamic turn-based combat system, over-the-top animations, and team-up moves during enemy battles
  • Classic adventure game play combines with RPG elements to unravel the game’s mysteries and puzzles
  • Authentic Penny Arcade story and dialogue written exclusively by Jerry Holkins
  • Includes Gabe, Tycho, Annarchy and many other favorite Penny Arcade characters, plus new characters designed by Mike Krahulik

System requirements:

  • Windows® 2000/XP/VistaTM with latest updates
  • Pentium® III, AMD AthlonTM 1.0 GHz or better
  • ATI RadeonTM 9500 or better, NVIDIA GeForceTM FX 5200 or better, Intel® GMA 950 or better with 64 MB of video memory (shared or dedicated)*
  • 512 MB of available system memory
  • 350 MB of available hard drive space (185 MB installed)

How to fix the game crash in Pelican Bay:

1) Open folder C:\Documents and Settings\YourNameHere\Local Settings\Application Data\HotheadGames\RainSlickEp1
2) Open YourNameHere_AutoSave.sav with notepad.
3) 15th line entry Entered_Boardwalk = “0″; Change to Entered_Boardwalk = “1″;

Play the game and you can now enter pelican bay.

NOTE: Doing this will disable the disembodied voice’s introduction to the zone, but at least you can enter it now!

(thx guys for putting this into the comments)

    @10 Nikola:

this is not intended as criticism of your post, cause this is a cool little game, so thanks for that.

    but you said:

“like Sam & Max episodes that is made four younger crowd but this game is a little bit serous”

    followed by:

“Hey I did say that is a episode game similar to those above you mentioned but more SERIOUS.I’ts like a point & click adventure with action.Sam & Max have child graphic and weird humor.
This is just my opinion in the text above and you don’t have to agree with it!”

    and then:

“Sam Max you have to read the whole sentence.Cuzz I know what did you think.
    I’ll explain:
Sam & Max-Dog & rabbit and weird tasks and its boring
But this one is action, unexpected humor and cool lasks”

now, no point saying whos right and wrong; you didnt like the humour of sam&max, thats fine… but to call say its aimed at kids or boring is just insulting something you dont understand.

theres a review of “sam and max hit the road”, the 1993 original game (based on the comic) here:
    http://www.gamerankings.com/itemrankings/launchreview.asp?reviewid=472117

and id draw your attention to this quote:
“Although Sam & Max Hit the Road may look like a cartoon, it’s most definitely not designed for kids. There are many visual jokes, but the backbone of the game is in its witty dialogue. Good language skills are required to truly appreciate it as the humor strongly relies on verbal acrobatics, on the use of polysyllabic words, old English and other such oddities. There are also lots of references to politics, films, celebrities and pop culture in general. This doesn’t mean that Hit the Road is meant only for people with an IQ higher than 180, though - there are many levels of fun to be had, and this only guarantees that the game has lots of replayability value: the next time you’re playing it, you may get a movie reference you didn’t notice earlier.”

much the same could be said of the subsequent episodic series.

so basically, dont write something off as childish or boring, just because it didnt amuse you.

This game is pretty funny at times and definately has “adult” humour all the way through. The crack worked (to activate the full game) but the bugfix didn’t (for me anyway) No probs though, I just edited the save file to say I’d been to the boardwalk and the rest of the game worked fine. The downside is that it feels unfinished, It really only is “half” a game, thus, the $20 price-tag. I completed it in about 6 hours or less and it wasn’t tremendously difficult and had no difficulty settings. I’d still say it was worth a play through because it was quite original at times (although at others, was quite repetetive). So Thanks for the u/l and the tips about editing the save. After I had finished I went in and messed around with all manner of things in the save-file to make it a bit more fun. I would expect that the next game (PART 2) will use THE SAME savefile as there are many things in there which are not in PART 1 of the game, so have fun and thanks again :)

*Why* should anyone crack this game? All you have to do is to enter a serial number, and voilà, it will work just without *any* problems. And it’s easier, too. It’s just that no one seems to provide a serial number….

  32. user2
    June 15th, 2008 | 14:03

foo, it’s because they will ban a serial which will be used by many people.

Just thought i’d say the only thing similar between Sam and Max and Penny arcade is that there episodic.

Penny arcade is NOT a point & click it is an RPG!

I think(or hope) there was bad english in the original blurb about the game when stating in was for a younger crowd so i shall ignore that but my point is this.

Theres NO point comparing them since there different Genres Sam and max isn’t boring its just not the type of game you think it is. for the last time Penny Arcade is an RPG more akin to final fantasy than sam and max.

    okay rant over.

GRRR, none of these cracks seem to wrok for me, i just always get generic “encountered a problem and needs to be closed”

  36. w00dy
    July 5th, 2008 | 09:41

im fairly sure the issue is just that r4 doesn’t have any cracks yet :(

  37. w00dy
    July 6th, 2008 | 22:58

Actually user2, they may ban new players from registering with that serial, but they cant stop existing users from using it because the game is completely offline except for initial registration.

Also, I queried the error 666 on the Greenhouse forums, and a Hothead person there said that they introduced it to appear if the game was identified as being modified or corrupted.

So essentially, it is suggesting the people who pirate the game are evil.
