Paramount drops HDDVD. End of format war?

Paramount studios is poised to drop its support of the high-definition DVD (HD DVD) format after Warner Bros studio said it would back the competing Blu-ray format, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday. The loss of support from Paramount, which is owned by Viacom Inc, would likely deal the final blow to the HD DVD format backed by Toshiba Corp and put an end to the format war, the newspaper said on its Web site. Time Warner Inc’s Warner Bros studio on Friday said it would exclusively release high-definition DVDs in Sony Corp’s Blu-ray format, marking a major setback to the HD DVD camp.

Blu-ray discs outsold HD DVD by nearly two-to-one in the United States last year, but HD DVD had secured major allies in August when Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc said they would go exclusively with HD DVD. But Paramount is understood to have a clause in its contract with the HD DVD camp that would allow it to change sides if Warner Bros backed Blu-ray, the Financial Times said, citing people familiar with the situation. However, Paramount spokeswoman denied this news as speculative with “Paramount’s current plan is to continue to support the HD DVD format”.

I’m bumbed about this news but at the same time I’m glad its all coming to and end.

If I had my way the HD-DVD would have one simply because its not made by S0ny and I’m not a S0ny fan.. Anyway.. it over and HD-DVD has lost.

Now can I please have a Blu-ray burner for my PC at $100 and a 50 pack of 50GB Blu-ray discs for $30 or do I need to wait a little longer….

  16. Oh No
    January 8th, 2008 | 11:00

Disaster! S0ny with monopoly control over a format is very bad news for consumers. The BD+ DRM cr@p is just the start (anybody remember memory sticks and CD rootkits). The DRM and the payoff from S0ny is why the studios switched. Unless the extra BD+ DRM gets well broken there may be long waits for releases of new HD rips. At least with HD-DVD there was no region coding and “just” the AACS to get past.

haha Alpha. Have you ever used a ps3? At all? I picked one up for christmas, after having used a 360 for almost a year. Sorry but the ps3 wipes the floor with the 360. It’s shameful how much better it is at almost everything. I say almost because the 360 has a bigger lineup of games (having been out that extra year and all). That will change with time of course. :)

So yeah, one hell of a happy (and surprised) ps3 owner here. Oh and the web browsing function (with a keyboard and mouse too) is a nice feature. With it’s brilliant media centre abilities it’s become my favorite bit of hardware at the moment. :D

g3rry, stop deluding yourself. Where were you when the DVD+R and DVD-R battles ensued? Why didn’t you petition the corporations when CD-ROM become a standard?

Blu-ray and HD-DVD has been about determining which standard to stick with, like we have with all previous incarnations. It has always come down to one (or a variation of the same thing like DVD+ and -).

Actual informed consumer choice appears only once a standard is formed. Right now, a large segment of consumers are not “choosing” at all. They’re waiting for the dust to settle.

How’s that cheaply built 360 holdin’ up? How many ring of death error’s have you had so far? Don’t worry, it seems to be one of those in-built “features” that MS does so well. :)

I didn`t particularly choose to have Blu-ray…it was built into my console of choice, the PS3. I didn`t particularly want to get a HD TV, but now that I do I`m glad I have one…my PS3 looks infinately better on it, the games AND the movies. You prefer Xbox? Good for you. I don`t. I happen to have a PS3 with a built in Hi-Def movie player I didn`t have to pay extra for, it upscales normal DVDs and plays them great and now plays most of my DIVX and XVID movies from hard drive (which will soon be upgraded from the 60Gb version to 320Gb – bog standard Sata notebook drive Mr Gates). The more companies that side with Bluray means I`ll get a wider choice of movies. I`m happy :-)

    @me007

Why do everyone think that its any company vs. any other company?

It’s the Blu-ray Disc Association vs. the HD DVD Promotion Group (or DVD forum which developed the hd dvd disc)

Sony isn’t even the biggest company within the BDA.

And just so you know while Toshiba isn’t as big as Sony it’s not far from.

    Toshiba
    Employees 190,708
    Revenue $63.7 Billion USD

    Sony
    Employees 163,000
    Revenue $70.303 billion USD

As for backing the money, the hd dvd is backed by Microsoft, Intel, Toshiba and alot more companies which isn’t exactly broke.

    @MrGrey
What Yea Ok meant was that you infact did have to pay extra for the blu-ray player. If the PS3 would have had an normal DVD player it would have been alot cheaper.

  41. Anon
    January 8th, 2008 | 14:34

Why is everybody dissing PS3 anyways? lol. >.> i love my PS3, and i dont see what does PS3 have to do with this war anyways…

there are Bluray Players… PS3 isnt the ONLY Bluray player in the whole wide world.

Americans just wanna be special i guess… Cuz i havent seen a popularity of HD-DVD anywhere else in the world other than America. Lol

In Australia there is basically 0 Popularity, all the major DVD/Movies outlets do not stock HD-DVD, and only stock Bluray.

Same as in Hong Kong and most of the Asian countries, where majority sold is bluray and not hd-dvd. I remember going to japan and hong kong…. 80% = bluray stock, 20% = hd-dvd stock, they dont even stock a HD-DVD Player, they only stock Blu-ray players. And NO its not because its always sold out, its simply they dont favour it.

I personally like the PS3, yes the PS3 has its flaws, like all systems do. If you really want to go into its flaws, then why don’t we go into Xbox360′s ring of death?

“citing people familiar with the situation.” ?

    August 20, 2007
“Paramount Pictures [...] will offer next-generation DVDs in the HD DVD format and drop support for Blu-ray, …”
    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20360863/
    http://www.theage.com.au/news/articles/dreamworks-paramount-drop-bluray/2007/08/21/1187462222023.html

    THIS is ther reason:

“Earlier this week it emerged that Paramount is to be paid by Toshiba and the other HD-DVD proponents for producing content exclusively for the HD-DVD format.”
    http://www.computing.co.uk/vnunet/news/2197369/toshiba-paramount-hd-dvd-deal
    (Aug 2007)

Toshie paid Paramout – it was a $$$ deal, so it wasn’t going to last.

Hence, this is completely unsurprising. It was a temporary deal to try and improve HDDVD sales and kill BR.

Didn’t work out, BR is still in the running. Toshie can’t keep paying for it, so it was going to end eventually.

Hence.. big deal. War is FAR from over.

@43 Companies pay money for there product to be used. I guarantee sony is doing the same thing with studios. Its just what happens when new tech comes on the market. I’m not saying that its a perfect system but it happens a lot. Btw, stop with the damn PS3 360. It is all about the personality of the consumer. Some people like to be on the edge of tech and happen to have $400-$600 USD lying around. Some people like to get a little cheaper system that had more game content at the time. Sony will catch up and 360 will stay strong. Wii……. well we will have to deal with being the red-headed, non-HD, step child of the console world( I’ll be damned if I own one!)

    @ 2eeaf
“What Yea Ok meant was that you infact did have to pay extra for the blu-ray player. If the PS3 would have had an normal DVD player it would have been alot cheaper.”

what you fail to mention is that the Blu Ray Player is built in…as in…in built, built in part of the whole machine, the HD-DVD for the XBOX 360 is an add on…which looks stupid, and in design terms is quite tacky, and I can say that as I own a 360 (but didn’t get a HD-DVD player for that very reason…way too many boxes, it wasn’t even rectified in the Elite model (a black system with an off white HD-DVD add on…what were they thinking?

I’ve used my brothers PS3, and all I can say is, yes it’s expensive, but there is a reason for that, it’s all inclusive (has everything that is needed) rather than MS’s approach with the “ooh let’s wait and see” rather than making a stand and putting the HD-DVD drive in the system…not only that…but the fact that they have so many different system models for one console says that they really don’t know what they want…plus all the problems with the system (I’m on my second machine…which still scratches disks at times)

I’ll be getting a PS3 when I have the money, it’s just a better overall system (but of course certain people just can’t seem to see that…as they have a hatred for Sony for some reason)

  61. Captainkremmen
    January 8th, 2008 | 17:34

Although it hasn’t happened yet, it will come. Paramount and the other studio still supporting HD-DVD aren’t stupid. With the recent Warner announcement, and the increasing sales of the PS3 it was only a matter of time. No major studio is going to ignore the higher sales of Blu-Ray over HD-DVD. No matter what the fanboys on both sides say, Blu-Ray was, on paper, the more technically advanced of the two formats but HD-DVD took the lead with innovation and interactivity. It’s not that Blu-Ray can’t do it, it just hasn’t had these features yet but with v1.1 and v2.0 coming soon it will match and surpass HD-DVD in that respect. Both formats have their flaws, we really should have had a hybrid format like we had with DVD. For those that don’t remember exactly the same thing was about to happen a few years ago with two competing formats, MMCD (Multimedia CD) and SD (Super Disc). Both competing camps however, didn’t want a format war, got together and took the best from both formats to create what we all now know as DVD. Same thing could have happened here, but it was TOSHIBA that walked away not Sony. At the time it was reported that members of both camps favoured most of the features of Blu-Ray over HD-DVD. We would have ended up with Blu-Ray with a few HD-DVD features tacked on but Toshiba were having none of this so pulled out.

And for those idiots believing Sony will take over the world and keep prices high, nonsense. Sony may have come up with the format in the first place but they placed the evolution, marketing, licencing and promotion of the product with an independent body of which they are just one member of hundreds. Like DVD, the Blu-Ray association will licence the technology to anyone who wants to build Blu-Ray players, from the huge multinational companies like Philips to the small chinese or tiawanese companies like Mico, Liteon etc. This will drive prices down in exactly the same way as it did with DVD. Being a Sony invention it is of course, Sony doing the most for the format at the moment, but what do you expect?. In the HD-DVD camp it is Toshiba doing the same but no one moans about that. What is the difference?.

From a personal point of view I would have preferred HD-DVD to win simply because of the inferior encryption and the fact HD-DVD wasn’t region coded but in the end it wont matter, Blu-Ray encryption will be broken and we’ll also have multi region players available especially once the chinese get in on the act. It may take a couple of years but it will happen.

As for those slagging off the PS3, grow up!. I have both an XBox 360 and a PS3. Both are great consoles but the xbox had to be repaired twice in the first year, the PS3 has never had a problem at all. I personally prefer the PS3, it’s better looking, better built, has far more advanced multimedia features and of course, has an inbuilt Blue-ray player. XBox Live however is superior to Sony’s online gaming platform.

    Rant over.

@64 : 100 $ for HDMI cable ?? lol……You can get one for like 15 $ on Monoprice and it’s going to do the job just as well as those extremely overpriced 100$ Monster cables. This is what i did and it works No 1 with my PS3.

$100 for a HDMI cable?. I paid £7 for mine (around $14) at a local av store near where I live.

XBox 360: £249.50, 20Gb HDD, 1 x wireless controller, ethernet cable, component av cable (no HDMI cable), headset, 30 days xbox live. Cannot play any HD format.

Playstation 3: £299.99, 40Gb HDD, 1 x wireless controller, plays Blu-Ray discs straight out of the box. NO component or HDMI cables, no headset, no ethernet cable.

These are current UK prices as of today. Yes the PS3 is first and foremost a games console, and like the xbox, is a great gaming machine. But the fact it can play Blu-Ray without having to spend another couple of hundred is a major plus point to. £7 for an HDMI cable is a small price to pay I think.

I really like the my xbox360, but having both machines, I just prefer the PS3, if that makes me a fanboy then so be it.

    January 8th, 2008 | 19:35

    @67 : Correct

I need to add that if you get the Elite or the HD-DVD add on or the 60 $ yearly subscription for live (or all 3) then in the end the 360 will end up as more much expensive than both PS3 models currently available.Sure you can get a basic 360 and no Live fpr 249$ but then your much better off to pay 50 $ more and get a Blu-Ray player + free online play with the PS3.

All in all that’s why i think the PS3 is a better investement than the 360 , expecially now that Blu-ray seems to be winning the format war.

It’s good that the format war is coming to an end. It would have been so much better if all the companies had worked together on a format – that way there wouldn’t have ended up being a load of useless HDDVD players, a load of pissed off people and a load of companies losing money because they supported HDDVD.

  73. 04321
    January 8th, 2008 | 20:31

@99: some companies are making players that play both formats – I guess that’s a pretty good idea cause the people that bought them will be fine, and the companies will be doing pretty well cause they get to charge more for the fact that it plays both.

  74. Blu-Ray is King
    January 8th, 2008 | 20:36

@72 : It’s not going to happen. Most studios are lining up with Blu-Ray because they want the war to be over asap.Blu-Ray now has 70 % exclusivity on all Hollywood releases and the remaining studios will soon follow suit because it’s in their best interests to do so.

HD-DVD is on it’s last legs and has about 1 year left to live at most (until the exclusive contracts they signed with Paramount & co expire). After that it’s game over

That’s because they have to or otherwise they would be sued for breach of contract.

Once the contract expires though , they will switch to Blu-ray.Basically HD-DVD is one artificial life support and it’s lifespan is linked to that contract.Once it ends , HD-DVD will die with it.

I can understand why some people might be pissed if paramount has left and bluray wins, hell I would be pissed if hddvd won because that would mean that my money was wasted, not completely becuase I got a ps3 not a stand alone blueray player.
The fact of the matter is that even if bluray loose I vow not to go onto sites and bad mouth hddvd because that would be a waste of my time and its just plain childish. As for this choice crap people are spouting, what choice its a format war. bluray has outsold hddvd from the start and right now its outselling it by 2 to one. Thats why its wining because the movie studios are getting a feel for the water and jumping on the format which is selling more. If hddvd was outselling bluray by that much then hddvd would win. This format war was based on choice and people chose. Unfortunately that leave the nice people who adopted the other format early and will have to face a decline of movies being released on the format until it eventually dies.
For choice sony has been a great company, I’ll give you an example. Sonys ps3 verses microsofts xbox 360. Yes I know the format war isnt sony vs microsoft im just giving an example of consumer choice. Microsoft were actually the first console maker to make legal arangements to stop third party companies from making certain accesories. The hardrive being one of those, wireless dongle being another and a few more I cant really remember. Sony gives the user the gift of choice allowing them to by whatever make 2.5 serial ata drive (laptop harddrive) meaning you can buy a 320gig hardrive for around the same price youb would get a xbox hardrive for and because theres competition in the market you get price drops shock horror. I had a 360 for about a year and it just wants to eat your money and scratch your discs. I was amazed when I got the ps3 because the discs stay in prestine condition even if you play alot and I bought preowned games that looked bran new. The ps3 will get a dvr reciever sometime this year allowing europeans to watch tv fom the ps3..Even that guy that was pissed at drm might be happy as the ps3 will allow you to back up your blurays to the hardrive and upload them to the psp anounced at ces2008. Alot of the issues people may have thought bluray had were resolved in version 1.1 and version 2.0 will alow internet functionality.
I dont like media center extender because they want you to buy there microsoft windows xp media center to get it to work. Peope think the ps3 is a rip off but think off all those crappy addons you have payd for to get the same fuctionality, controller charge kits and rechargable batteries, microsoft branded hardrives, wireless dongle, and hddvd player.. If you dont want hddvd then all is well but I decided I was going to back bluray and a while after that I decided to get rid of the 360 and buy a ps3. I agree xbox live is better then playstation network at the moment but that can be fixed with software updates free of charge and I dont have to pay any subscription fees either.
I just dont get most people when it comes to the sony vs microsoft crap. I had an xbox not a ps2 because the xbox was better, I now have the ps3 instead of the xbox 360 because the ps3 is better.
Oh heres another one for you… sony allow and embrace linux on ps3′s. Which means you can stick a great OS on there too to do work on if you want.
Bluray is not the end of the world, its a format. Dont listen to crap people say, get some balls and have an opinion. look for some facts. The thing I hate the most about the xbox brand is that people run to microsoft and badmouth other companies for their own benifit. You dont think hddvd wining woudnt damage the playstation brand. And all the people that flock around like idiots shouting rrrriiiiidddddggggggeeee racer.. Do you realise how ridiculus you sound.. Braindead would be a better word because you are unable to actually dig up facts about the two options.
The wii is another kind of fun :D
Right so that ended up fairly long but The jist is.. Sony arent evil, there products arent bad, they do give consumer choice, and microsoft are very good at manipulating people to draw the attention away from their ever growing empire while ignorent bluray bashers go play their microsoft games console which is slowly trying to dominate another market slowly trying to push choice out by pushing comptitors out. Shame on you you ignorent fools.

    @4 AlphA,

Yu’re dreaming if you think you’ll be able to buy a 50 pack of Blu-Ray blanks for $30 anytime in the near future. It doesn’t matter how cheaply they can eventually manufacture them, they’ll keep the price artificially high for as long as they can using the argument that they cost more because they provide more storage capacity.

You can’t even buy a 50 pack of dual layer DVD blanks for that price.

Of course VHS only won because of the pr0n available for it while Betamax was a better system while the best was System2000 from Philps (magnavox).

I like BR a lot better than HDDVD simply because I like Sony more than M$.I had a PS, PS2 and decided to buy an XBOX. I only used it for XBMC available for it. Not to play games. I am not ready to spend money on a worthless 360 if it doesn’t come with a big HD and a HDDVD or BR player. And oh, more importantly BR is not available for 360 and I can not buy (or very difficult at least) HDDVD content here anyway, while BR is everywhere.

i apologize for the error of $100 i was thinking of past times and to be honest they were like $80. and hdmi cable quality do matter, just to make it fair and legit a ps3 hdmi cable is $30 brand name ok? i have no idea about euros.

but u aint got no game…that was my main point.

how do u buy a game console and not have it come with a game?

i will one day buy a ps3, that is for sure. but as a gamer, lets beReal here.

360 is now, ps3 is later.

    then again as a pirate….

playing backups on ur 360 makes ps3 a super fancy b-ray player.

Blu-Ray takes inside edge in war with HD-DVD
Up to 20 firms backing HD-DVD consider defection after Warner opted for Blu-Ray and Paramount is poised to follow
    Leo Lewis, Asia Business Correspondent

The sprawling consortium of technology and media companies assembled to promote the HD-DVD format of next-generation high definition discs faces a spate of defections to the rival Blu-Ray Disc consortium.

As many as 20 companies currently part of the HD-DVD Promotion Group could be preparing to remove their names from the alliance’s 130-strong membership list, The Times has learned.

Paramount yesterday emerged as the latest major Hollywood studio poised to switch allegiances.

Despite the huge armies of technology companies ranged against each other in the format showdown, Paramount has turned out to be a pivotal figure. Its decision in August to give exclusive backing to HD-DVD was seen as a potentially devastating blow to the prospects of Blu-Ray, and to the strategy of Sony’s president, Sir Howard Stringer.
    Related Links

Sir Howard consistently argued, though, that the Playstation3 games console, which includes a Blu-Ray disc player, would put the format in people’s living rooms around the world more quickly than HD-DVD players would be adopted by consumers. But Paramount, like other members of the HD-DVD group such as Fujitsu, Lenovo and Kenwood, has hedged its bets. It offered exclusivity in August on the basis that it could reverse the decision should Warner Bros switch to Blu-Ray.

The threatened exodus from the HD-DVD format follows last week’s decision by Warner Bros to back the rival Blu-Ray Disc format, whose main technology backers include Sony, Apple and Dell.

One Tokyo-based analyst said that the defections could represent the final nails in the coffin of Toshiba’s HD-DVD standard after a bitterly-fought “format war” that has run for a little over one year.

Eiichi Katayama, of Nomura Securities, said that the battle between the formats, which display films and video games more sharply in an era of ever-growing television screen sizes, was now “entering its final phase”.

Pony Canyon, a major Japanese music, animation and film studio and part of the giant Fuji Television media empire, said that although it was currently part of the HD-DVD Promotion Group, the decisions of US studios meant it would “choose Blu-Ray in the end”.

Several other Japanese firms – including content producers and electronics component makers – said that their support of HD DVD was “under review” and that they knew of many others in the same position. Others, who admitted that they had previously been waiting for “clear market momentum”, said that it had now probably arrived.

Backers of HD-DVD point to the relative ease of producing the discs, and the lower cost of building machines capable of reading them. Unlike previous format wars, particularly the notorious Betamax v VHS skirmish in the 1980s, the war between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD has effectively been decided in boardrooms, rather than electronics showrooms. The decisions of the major studios have come well before those of customers, who have generally held back from picking one format for fear of backing a loser.

Facing a future with only Universal Pictures as its major Hollywood supporter, Toshiba and HD-DVD, said analysts at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, could quickly find itself isolated. But HD-DVD does retain a few potential trump-cards, most notably Microsoft. It is the presence of Microsoft on HD-DVD’s list of supporters, say many of the promotion group, that preserves hope that the format could yet prevail.

Microsoft’s Xbox could consider Blu-ray support

    * Reuters
    * Tuesday January 8 2008

LAS VEGAS, Jan 8 (Reuters) – Microsoft Corp’s Xbox video gaming unit still fully backs Toshiba Corp’s HD-DVD high-definition DVD format but could consider supporting Sony Corp’s rival Blu-ray technology should consumers want it, an executive said on Tuesday.
“It should be consumer choice; and if that’s the way they vote, that’s something we’ll have to consider,” Albert Penello, group marketing manager for Xbox hardware said when asked whether Microsoft would support a Blu-ray DVD accessory in the event that HD-DVD failed.
Microsoft does not believe the surprise decision last week by Time Warner Inc unit Warner Bros., the top seller of home movies, to abandon HD-DVD format in favor of Blu-ray should affect sales of its Xbox 360 video game console, Penello said.
“I fundamentally don’t think … this has a significant impact on Xbox 360 versus (Sony’s) PlayStation 3,” Penello told Reuters in an interview at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. (Reporting by Scott Hillis, editing by Gerald E. McCormick)

Why do the HD-DVD fanboys and Blu-Ray fanboys have to come on here and insult each other, we should be insulting whoever reported this. They went on for 2 paragraphs talking a load of speculative bull crap and who ever wrote this is just trying to get some attention. If some of you didn’t read to the end, then it says Paramount spokeswoman denied this news as speculative with “Paramount’s current plan is to continue to support the HD DVD format”.
I personally would prefer it if HD-DVD won because I have the HD-DVD add on for the 360 but I would still keep it cause it’s small and I have 9 very good films to go with it.
I just don’t understand how all these Blu-Rays are being played because most players have Java and firmware problems.

I own both systems and I’m happy with both systems. Fact of the matter is the PS3 is a way better buy. Blu-ray included, HDMI included (not cables =/), 60gb HDD compared to the very small 20gb that came with the premium xbox360. PS3 has a $600 price tag compared to the $400 Premium Xbox360. but go out and buy your HDdvd player and your already up to $600. oh I’m sorry, you want the HDMI hook up amd you already bought the premium system. Looks like you’ll just have to buy the Xbox360 elite. But you still wont get the HDdvd player included. Tell ya what, we’ll give ya 120gb HDD to make up for it. You can just pawn the Xbox360 you already bought to try and feel better about forking out another $600 for the Elite. As long as you keep giving us (Microsoft) more money. Thats all that matters. The biggest argument you have is “The PS3 has no games”. Yeah and the Xbox has so many great original games to choose from. First off, the Xbox has been out for over 2 years. Can you give me any title that is Xbox exclusive thats original? Halo 3 you say? well the title gives it away already. its the third installment of a game that already came out on the original xbox. Sure it looked pretty, was fun but very short campaign. The multiplayer is what sells the game and thats just the same stuff you get from 1 and 2. therefor not original. Bioshock, Gears of War, Mass Effecti is the best they have to offer. However after 2 years thats the best they could do? 3 titles. Im not saying the PS3 has more or better games. but for being out for only a year. they have a better selection. Uncharted: Drakes Fortune. Heavenly Sword, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, Folkore. are a few great titles exclusively for the PS3 In the coming months you’ll see alot more and better exclusives from the PS3, Final Fantasy XIII, Killzone 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Soulcalibur IV, God of War 3, All maybe sequels but atleast they are innovative. not just rehashing of the same game. One thing the Xbox has going for it s their Xbox Live. It truly is the better interface between the 2. however, in order to do anything you would want to do. You have to pay for. Play online with friends, Download new content for games you already own. Wallpapers, gamertags, pretty much anything you can think of. you have to pay extra for. So as long as the PS3 remains free. I’m happy with it. Not to mention the new “Home” interface the PS3 is beta testing now. which will be free to play. Yes, i said play. cause you create your own avatar and decorate your apartment. then you can walk around meet friends, join games. Watch movie/game trailers, or even play some pool with someone you don’t know. We’ll have to wait and see how it stacks up with Live though.
So before you just let any babel come out of you mouth, actually take the time to see which system has more to offer. if you happend to wait and get to buy the Xbox360 Elite first. your going to be paying almost $1,000 with all the accessories your gunna need to play HDdvd movies in high def. where the PS3 will be around $700+tax.

Won, won what… the format war is not over it will never be over… as soon as a ‘winner’ is declared the newer better format will be unveiled, with all the shiny bells and whistles that make you moist… this is commercialism this is life… out with the old, in with the fad of the moment… or am i the only one who remembers when billy ray cirus was considered a sex symbol, mullet and all…. (circa 1992) Time to wake up and pee on the roses people… they always win… they never really had anything at stake only the consumer did… buy this no buy this because it is better, no wait this one is new and improved (i.e x-box 360 elite, same junk new wrapper) My Friend Stephanie will buy anything that says new and improved on it and she is a economics professor at Dartmouth, she says it must be better if it is labeled that way… we are sheep, nothing more… we are led to believe this or that is better or worse than the other.. don’t get me wrong i am not saying that the abacus is better than the pc, or that an atari is the same as a ps3, but then again, it is… we were told we wanted better so we wanted better… we were happy with pong and pac-man… any of us over 30 can remember this, but then we were sold on the new and improved… as we are now as we will always be… of course there are some exceptions… we did not take too well to the mini disc…. but perhaps their time will come… because the original DVD was a laser disc player… and you can not say it wasn’t… do the research and you will see it was… just made the disc smaller and improved the number of lines of resolution… nothing more… but laser disc failed so they retooled it.. and renamed it… Dvd=Digital video disc… which uses what.? a laser to read the data… laser disc was digital… new name new and improved always sells

2540p(4520*2540p) then super hi-vision/Ultra high definition video (7680*4320) but that is more for dolby digital cinema theaters but 1080p is all you need for 100″ and under if you have super hd on a 42″ tv you wont notice a difference unless you have eagle eyes! so 1080p is all you need!!!!!blu ray will last for 30 years min.!

Everyone seems to be forgetting that the Xbox 360′s capabilities are and will continue to be greatly hindered by the fact that all of their games are produced on DVDs. The PS3 plays Blu-Ray format discs which are undeniably better than DVDs. As games become more complex (i.e. playable content increases, resolution improves) DVDs WILL NOT be able to handle the load. Xbox 360 owners will either have to deal with watered down versions of killer new games, switch discs constantly, or all buy the ugly HD DVD add on if MS so chooses to upgrade their gaming media. All of these options suck. Also keep in mind that all major companies generally deny rumors of closed door decisions until they are good and ready to make the announcement themselves. Remember it was rumored that Warner would drop HD DVD BEFORE it actually was confirmed. Sorry HD DVD supporters you lost your investment. Get back on the horse and buy Blu-Ray!

They are both the same, you don’t get better picture quality off Blu or HD, HD-DVD has the edge with sound due to the amount of mandatory codecs but they are basically the same. Blu-Ray and HD-DVD will even be the same size come Autumn because of the release of the 51GB HD-DVD (which will be playable by all players). But really why do you need that much space for films, I have 28 HD-DVD’s, excluding Heroes, Sopranos and Star Trek, none of them have more than 1 disc.

    And @NightFlight

I’m more worried that due to the PS3 having less graphics memory and RAM than the 360, this will stop companies making games as good as they should be.

    28 Hd Dvds?!?!
That is a lot of money spent. This must be horrendously bad news for you. Even if this news is pure rumor, HD DVD is still on its last leg. I’d sell them to a rental store if I were you.

    @JC
Also the Xbox 360 does not have more graphics memory. It has 10 mb while the PS3 has 256 mb of dedicated graphics memory. This next part I’m unsure of but for the 360 to play games with only 10 mb of video ram I’m assuming that it shares the other 512 mb of general RAM. Since the ps3 dedicates 256 mb to video and 256 to everything else there is essentially a 10 mb difference in total available memory.

Also the GPU on the PS3 is technically better than the 360.

The 360 has the ATI Xenos. This is the same as ATI R500 which is like a lower spec Radeon X1800 (which was an R520).

The PS3 has the Nvidia-SCEI RSX which is a G71, equivalent to a GeForce 7900GT/GTX as it has 24 parallax pixel pipelines. The lower spec 7900GS only has 20 parallax pixel pipelines so we can rule that model out.

The X1800 was flawed and didn’t perform very well. It was also very late on the scene and was quickly replaced by the X1900 which was a much better card and fixed many of the problems of the X1800. The 7900GT/GTX’s on the other hand were damn good graphics cards.

The companies of the HD DVD Promotional Group today issued a statement in response to the decision by Warner Home Video to exclusively back the Blu-ray format:

“While Warner’s decision is a setback for HD DVD, the consumer has benefited from HD DVD’s commitment to quality and affordability — a bar that is critical for the mainstream success of any format. We believe widespread adoption of a next generation format will ultimately be determined by the consumer.”

Now that Warner Bros. has decided to go 100% Blu-ray with all of their titles (which include releases from New Line Cinema, HBO and tons of other independent studios), Blu-ray has garnered more than 70% of of the studio support, leaving the HD DVD camp in the dust. In addition, last month saw the Blu-ray Association start to support the release of adult movies in the hi-def format, a factor that HD DVD was counting on to become victorious in the format war. Obviously now, HD DVD is officially starting to lose the battle.

It is obviously time for HD DVD to honorably concede and save less tech-savvy consumers the money and confusion of dealing with two formats.

I’ll settle this once and for all.

PS3: Good Blu-ray player and has some good games *coming soon*
360: Good games system and has most of the good games at the moment + Media Center system.
Wii: Best games system EVER, explains why it is out selling the other two by almost triple.

Back on topic: Blu-ray has more storage and HD-DVD has more support in the PC world…. well they’d like you to believe it does.

I’m going to wait until Blu-ray Burners are nice and cheap then buy one. So looks like I will be waiting about 3 – 4 years.

Correction: Wii is the cheapest game system right now. It is not the best. It is great fun for a while but its games are mostly simple and childish. When the excitement of the cool controllers wears off real gamers seek challenging and complex gameplay and the Wii DOES NOT provide that.
