Panasonic introduces the world’s biggest TV

A 150-inch high-definiton plasma TV unveiled by Panasonic is the world’s largest to date, the Japanese consumer electronics company claimed Monday at the International Consumer Electronics Show. The plasma panel features an 8.84 million pixel image resolution. Its screen is the equivalent of nine 50-inch sets, with an effective viewing area of 11 feet, the company said. It’s a step up from Panasonic’s 103-inch version, which cost $70,000 when it launched. The company did not say in a news release how much the 150-inch panel will cost.

Panasonic’s other prototypes introduced at CES include a 42-inch panel that uses half the energy but stays as bright as its predecessor, and an ultra-thin 50-inch panel that is less an inch thick, the company said. Both plasma and LCD TVs have been selling well in the U.S. as consumers are switching out their old tube sets so they can watch high-definition TV and movies. Panasonic also said it plans to bring videos from Google Inc.’s YouTube directly to its line of Internet-enabled high-definition plasma TV sets. The new Viera HDTVs also provide access to Google’s photo sharing site, Picasa. Man, this monster wouldn’t even fit in my room!

“Its screen is the equivalent of nine 50-inch sets”

    9×50 is 450, making it 450″

    is it 150″ or 450″????

  12. Fetid Monkey
    January 10th, 2008 | 13:29

its 150″. screens are measured diagonally.

In the future, houses will be built around TVs like this.

But if it’s not widescreen, fock it.

Why is this technology needed? there are many good HD projecters that can be set up for under 5K…

What is the resolution of that tv anyway? Prolly looks like crap.

    January 10th, 2008 | 14:17

All of you complaining it’s not a wide screen tv.
you can still watch hd on it,
but it will be around 120″ tv, not good enough?

People are saying it won’t fit in their rooms….

Well say if it did fit, HOW THE F*CK WOULD YOU GET IT INTO THE ROOM!?!?!

Seriously it wouldn’t even fit in through the window, let alone the door. You would have to knock a wall down or something unless you had 150″ door frames!!

    January 10th, 2008 | 16:09

What video input will it take? As a general rule, you should sit 4 x diagonal away from the screen, this means one would have to be 4 x 150 inches away from the screen which is 600 inches (15.2 metres) away. Kind of defeats the idea of a huge telly.

That’s a nice thought. I have to agree that this is only made for the wealthy. The average working man/woman, can’t afford this, let alone get it in their house.

    January 10th, 2008 | 16:42

I’m sure if you’re rich enough to buy it they’d assemble it at your residence somehow because it won’t fit through any normal door…. and would only fit in a garage door if you put it on its side!

    January 10th, 2008 | 17:47

I wouldn’t like to be the one paying the electricity bill for this giant:) Can you imagine how much juice it will require? Plus you won’t need central heating, this little tv will take care of heating your whole house:)

  33. January 10th, 2008 | 19:30

youtube/google videos on a freaking screen like that ? Hello, a youtube flv is like 40×40 almost like an animated gif but wrose quality. Why the hell would any one think they want to watch a 1ft large pixelated block change from brown to black ? No brain execs.

  34. Tonto
    January 10th, 2008 | 20:12

Halo 3 would look sweet on that!

    January 10th, 2008 | 21:00

these things are not not meant for a user home but usually for displays on exhibitions as the current flat panels displays are too complicated and / or require too much time to set up. here you have something that theoretically just needs to be plugged in.

For example in E3 in US or GC in EU will naturally attract more people or concerts to show live pics or on the roads tours with this thing mounted on a truck or something like that

    @35
and yes Halo 3 or any other graphics intensive thing will look sweet on it

    @34 Mr. X
all large size TVs use imaging algorithms to remove the square pixel effect and smooth out the image and they must have an idea how will they do it either bad or good

    January 10th, 2008 | 21:09

It’s a bit big for most homes…But for sports bars, arenas, conference rooms, etc… I could see the use.

    January 10th, 2008 | 21:16

What I just don’t get… Why buy a TV that big if you could easily buy like… 30 hd projectors? Or even some of these things they have in cinemas? You would even have spare money for a silver screen… (word found at leo ^^).
Waaaay more handy, it would be!

Madison Square Garden had an auction recently and sold a couple of those jumbo-tron screens used for concerts. They’re probably replacing them with something like this. I am having mine delivered monday…..hope it fits down the stairs to my west village brownstone!
