Pakistan banned YouTube, 2h global outage
Pakistan’s government has banned access to the video-clip website YouTube because of anti-Islamic movies posted on the site, an official said yesterday. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority told the country’s 70 internet service providers that the popular website would be blocked until further notice. The authority did not specify what the offensive material was, but a PTA official said the ban concerned a trailer for an forthcoming film by Dutch politician Geert Wilders. The film portrays Islam as a fascist religion prone to inciting violence against women and homosexuals. The unnamed official said the PTA had also blocked websites showing the controversial Danish cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad. The drawings were originally printed in European newspapers in 2006, but were reprinted by some papers last week. The PTA urged internet users to write to YouTube and request the removal of the films, saying that the authorities would stop blocking the video-sharing site once that had happened.
What’s more, Pakistan’s attempts to block access to YouTube have been blamed for a near global blackout of the site on Sunday. The nearly two-hour long blackout was almost certainly connected to Pakistan Telecom and internet service provider PCCW. A leading net professional told BBC News: “This was probably a simple mistake by an engineer at Pakistan Telecom. There’s nothing to suggest this was malicious.” It is believed Pakistan Telecom “hijacked” the web server address of the popular video site. IP hijacking involves taking over a web site’s unique address by corrupting the internet’s routing tables, which direct the flow of data around the world.

First off, I agree with the people that said that people in western countries would be able to do this and get away with it without people thinking about it twice…
Second, I do like to point out that people in the western countries like to treat everything that has to do with islam or anything even remotely connected to it with a condascendent look. Imagine a movie showing the jewish culture in a “bad light” or talking badly anything remotely connected to the jewish religion. Hypocrisy, in North America, news reports are censored, print media is censored, radio is censored, TV is censored and anythign deemed undesireable by teh powers that be is also blocked, removed or censored, including the public documents found on the White House website, which are heavily edited sometimes, often after an embarassing comment is aired publicly.
In Pakistan, they block access to a website and some gun totin’ cowboy is offering to attack them if he is voted for. In most cases that would seem foolish and impossible, but hey, they voted for Bush…..twice, why not some radical cowboy with an unqualified grudge to settle?!
Pakistam is not a bad place at all, it just has SOME bad people that garner the most attention, just like any other country in the world.
If they are blocking what is deemed unfair propaganda, it is no different than what the US, Canada, Germany, Australia or any other country would rightly do.

I’m curious .. where exactly are all these instances of censorship by the American government? Is there a bias in the media? Absolutely .. but I’m aware of no governmental censorship of the media .. just self-imposed censorship by the owners/editors/general managers of the voice/print/tv media.
BTW, Reporters without borders recently ranked the United States 48th out of 169 countryies evaluated on freedom of the press ( .. significantly higher than the country of Pakistan (152) and the majority of other Islamic countries.

Muslim men do not have to convert the woman it is desirable but the only factor that is required is that the children are brought up as muslim. As for your argument that it requires 4 male witnesses is a common myth in the case of rape, circumstantial evidence does suffice as well as the judges own decision ( discretion)to convict.

In actuality, there is censorship to one degree everywhere. To be 100% free from censorship, you should be able to say what you want, whenever and wherever you want it.
Certain censorship is there for the greater good (i.e., restricting pornography to adults, etc), but a greater majority of it is politically and/or religiously (or both in theocracies) based.
Oh .. btw to-sir (#62), if anti-Jewish speech were censored in the United States, how do you account for the KKK and other groups being able to put forth their own views without being censored (it may be reprehensible, but it’s still their right to spew it)

There was a girl on myspace THREATING TO KILL THE PRESIDENT .. she wasn’t arrested, she was questioned by federal agents.
So .. what you refer to as an instance of “no free speech” is actual a case where law enforcement officials investigated a crime (it’s against the law to threaten to kill the leader of the United States .. just like it is in many, many other countries) and questioned a suspect (who said that what she did was wrong and apologized).

to-sir, I couldn’t agree with you more — the people that commit these acts are not representative of the greater whole, but what is disturbing is that these acts are tolerated by others within the society (i.e., when police look on while girls are stoned to death).
Personally, I think this is one of the situations you encounter with religious states, rather than secular ones. While the arguement for religious states is that the code of morality can be enforced with the rule of law, it also shows that traditions that have evolved from hundreds, if not thousands, of years are also enforced with little regard for the evolution of societies.

Again, this is readuily available public information, even the WhiteHouse.com admits it, as do many other countries. At that time it was expected, “Loose lips sink ships” but it did carry on to today with teh government being very careful abotu what is reported, of course they claim that it is protection of security but that just makes it acceptable to censor without being questioned as to freedoms.
The point isn’t that the US is full of censorship but that the US if just as bad at censoring political messages, media and news(especially from the wars) as any other government, if not worse in some cases. Americans just don’t buy it, because they are told America is the only land of freedom there is. The FCC is like a chastity belt to the American TV viewer, if THEY don’t deem it worthy of your set, then you don’t get to watch it, whether you are mroe liberally minded toward it or not, you have to buy cable or satellite if you want to watch uncensored media.

The points made on whether ideological censorship is justified, whether it be Pakistan or American or European or whatever seems slightly misguided. Surely the point is that as rational beings we should all be able to make our own minds up. This cannot be done when the pool of information available is restricted.
Understandably vested interests choose to shape the information which civil society has at its disposal to perpetuate hegemonic rule. This is case in all polities, without exception.
The Internet, as such, is an invaluable resource for information which can be used without frontiers to auto educate ourselves so as to make rational value judgments on contentious / non contentious issues.
The attempts of governments to restrict the flow of information by ‘blocking’ certain parts of the web are fruitless for those with a little resourcefulness who can work around these blocks pretty easily.
The real ‘problem’ is a way of existing underpinned by self censorship which is engendered and created , in part, by asymmetrical power structures through the function of disciplinary based discourses and, increasingly, states of constant surveillance. (see Foucault for more on this)

Religion isn’t the source of such issues, people’s interpretation of a religion is teh problem. That’s why some feel Jesus walked on water, other translations state he walked beside water. It’s all in the translation and interpretation, the intent is never know unless you know the original author, I think the bible was written before Stephen King became popular so we are left with a good book, written in a foreign language and a bunch or interpreters who read something else into it than what was originally intended. Bible’s a bit dry but a good read all the same.

Nope, and I will be the first in line to say that was wrong and that an apology should be given. Nor am I saying that other religions have not done some pretty sorry things. But I AGAIN say the exact same thing I said earlier. Name me ONE religion that does all that I stated, other then Islam. name me ONE religion that to this day allows stoning a person to death other then Islam. You really need to wake up and see the documentary “Islam, what the west should know.” It uses sections from the life of islam’s “prophet” as well as from it’s own holy book that clearly shows that it calls for the death of unbelievers and a jihad on the world until it comes under the sway of Islam.
No, other religions have done some pretty bad things, but NO religion I know of other then Islam calls for the deaths of unbelievers directly in their holy books. Not even the Bible or the Torah or other religions do this. EHHHH, WRONG!!!! The age of concent for girls to marry was no less then 13 or 14 and has been that since Europeans came out of the caves. Once a girl started to menstrate, then and ONLY then was she considered for marriage, and even then she had to have a dowery. if the family of the groom could not produce a dowery in trade for her, then there was no wedding. Somehow it got turned around and the family of the bride started having to produce the dowery but that di not happen until the middle ages.

Pakistan is not a real country it didn’t exist until 1947, it’s just a part of India. Pakistani’s are just plain Indian Muslims. PERIOD. apart from that they are EXACTLY THE SAME AS INDIANS.
To show how ridiculous religion is and how it is made up fantasy, Islam didn’t exist when Ceasar was ruling the world from the Senate and library of Rome, Arabds were just real arabs back then not Islam didn’t exist.
Islam existed right from the beginning of humanity. The first Muslims were Adam and Eve(peace be upon them). Then all prophets came with the message of Islam, but later it was corrupted by human beings. Like how Jesus(peace be upon him) brought the message of Islam ,of one God ,later was diluted by making a prophet as son of God while God has no wife ,son or daughter.
Yeah, god only likes to have illegitimate childs – fatherless bast4rds.
All I have to say is this… I couldn’t give a damn if you insult Jesus, Satan, Muhammed – peace be upon him – or anything like that. At the end of the day, freedom of speech is freedom of speech. If you’re insulted by it, don’t look at it, simple as. No need to prevent everyone from viewing it. Also no reason to go burning flags. I’ll respect your rights to have your beliefs and your views. You also have to respect that of others.
No one in their right mind is saying that all Muslims are terrorists, unless they’re naive. At the end of the day, the only ones dropping bombs and starting wars over oil is America. I don’t know enough about the Israel/Palestine war to comment on that however. I know quite a few Muslims and they’re great people, no different from anyone else ‘cept they go to a mosque instead of a church. That said, I also know one who stated that “911 was a great” and how she hopes to see the west fall. But that said, I also know a hell of a lot of white “Christian’s” who preach “white power”…
