P2P expert marks RIAA as incompetent
One of the world’s top experts in the science of P2P file sharing has offered his harsh evaluation of the RIAA’s so-called expert witness report. With what can only be described as a good dose of Dutch courage, Delft University’s Assistant Professor Johan Pouwelse, dealt a devastating thump on the head to the music industry when he labeled the RIAA’s super expert, Dr Doug Jacobson’s report as ‘borderline incompetent’. Prof. Pouwelse is the same bloke who stopped the Dutch equivalent of the RIAA dead in their tracks back in 2005. In the UMG v Lindor trial, the RIAA claimed it had carried out its analysis with sophisticatedly advanced equipment and software which, it assured everyone, was never, ever mistaken. But now, Ms Marie Lindor has decided to fight back with a report drafted by her very own internationally renowned expert witness.
In his report, Pouwelse writes that certain procedures that should have been taken to ascertain that a particular computer had been uploading copyrighted works illegally, weren’t taken. And, taking no prisoners, Professor Pouwelse goes on to say that Jacobson, a director at the Iowa State University Information Assurance Center, lacked ‘in-depth analysis’, ‘proper scientific scrutiny’ and that his reports were ‘factually erroneous’ and frequently contradicted his own deposition testimony. Going for the jugular, Powelse describes the systems and techniques used in the indictment of Ms Lindor as ‘overly simplistic’, Jacobson’s investigative process as ‘unprofessional’ and his methods ’self-developed’, ‘unpublished’ and unaccepted by the scientific community. He concludes by giving his expert opinion that Jacobson has shown ‘borderline incompetence’.

RIAA have spewed out so much BS persecuting people its good to see somebody throwing it back in their face.
Haven’t we established that time-independent truth already!!
The Inquirer is a British technology tabloid website

“Prof. Pouwelse is the same bloke who stopped the Dutch equivalent of the RIAA dead in their tracks back in 2005.”
If you mean BREIN, (which is the RIAA equivalent in Holland)than this is a wrong statement. BREIN is hardly “stopped”. Recently they’ve forced several P2P sites to stop, and they keep on bludgeoning private P2P users with (illegal) house visits.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m on the side of Prof. Pouwelse. But I’m against amateuristic journalism that states facts wrong, something that rlslog staff members do a lot when it comes to P2P related news. And that’s not helping the P2P movement at all.
Prof. Pouwelse is also that guy behind Tribler. They are working hard on P2P there in Delft. I think I also met that guy last year on the university.
@16: RLSLog got the story from The Inquirer, why don’t yo go to their site and tell them instead.
lol i live @ 5k of Delft
i know where this guy lives:

What p2p movement? The one that blatantly disregards international copyright law? The one that engages in illegal, criminal activity? What movement is that?
Hey, I download loads of torrents but we in the p2p “community” have no rights. We should just quietly continue to download, as surreptitiously as possible, instead of trying to muster up some sort of social movement.
Cheers for the new desktop picture . Looks great centered with black background. (Straight + bit of a perv). lmao gerbil_penetrator but i do hope you’re kidding.
If they didn’t catch us yet is because they are
I think what he was trying to prove was that the methods they were using to prove people were downloading were not being followed properly and were not accurate enough, which meant that they would be targeting innocent users.
If I was trhe RIAA I would spend the money sitting in pubs all around the country and pouncing on the little Chinese people that turn up flogging the dodgy DVD and CD’s. If they did that I would sign up straight away!
Also they are not just incompetent, they are boring and they keep lying, they just want money, they use the artists as a dolls, using their records, movies… to get ca$h. What a sadness…

RIAA and their ilk are nothing more than vampires living off the hard work of the artists. For years they have robbed artists blind, giving them peanuts for their work while making millions for doing nothing more than “marketing”. Thanks to technological advances, nothing these vampires do cannot be done by the artists themselves. They are dinosaurs desperately clinging to an outdated business model. Their hypocrisy and arrogance is off the chart. The year before Napster took off, the record companies were found guilty of collusion by the U.S. government. It was found that they had colluded to “fix” the price of CDs and subsequently overcharged the public approximately $345 million dollars. Thats right $345 million. They very next year they began to cry that file-sharing is stealing from them. That’s right, they ripped everyone off, then cried when they got ripped off. Screw’em.

“Borderline incompetence” That’s a superb summarization of the RIAA

Your post has made my week. Thank you. OYFG LMAO!!!11one1…
When will the RIAA ever use is solitary brain cell and realise that it’s the sheer greed of the music companies that drive people to alternative sources. They are the only criminals in this scenario, and they persist to pay their artists pittances per cd, and retain the majority of the profits.
We all know how much a blank CD is these days .. so lose the greed and the sales may increase, or maybe they’re too late to claw back the customers they had years before.
In essence, they’ve dug their own grave !
I’m a leeching expert.
Hahahah owned! good to have him on our side
Pouwelse is de man :p
